Blue Ox is known internationally for recreational and commercial towing products, manufacturing in Pender, Nebraska since 1925. The line covers tow bars and vehicle-specific baseplates for flat towing behind a motorhome, sway control and weight distributing hitches, supplemental braking accessories and towing wiring, backed by patented designs and long-standing customer service.
Blue Ox has manufactured since 1925 and is recognised internationally for towing products and customer service. The company operates from Pender, Nebraska, where it grew out of Automatic Manufacturing Co., a business that started with cattle oilers and developed into agricultural equipment, tractor accessories and trailer towing hardware. Flat towing is the discipline Blue Ox is best known for. Towing a car with all four wheels on the ground behind a motorhome demands a system that stays rigid under braking, articulates properly over uneven ground, and connects to the towed vehicle at points strong enough to take the load. Blue Ox tow bars handle the first two, with self-aligning arms that latch under tension and release without a struggle when the load is off them. Vehicle-specific baseplates handle the third, engineered per make and model to tie into structural mounting points behind the fascia.
The wider flat towing range covers supplemental braking systems, safety cables and the accessories that make a complete legal setup, along with baseplate wiring and dinghy towing harnesses that pass lighting signals to the towed vehicle without back-feeding its electrical system.
For conventional trailer towing, Blue Ox weight distributing hitches with integrated sway control transfer tongue load onto the tow vehicle's front axle and resist the yaw that crosswinds and passing trucks induce.

Yes. Drilling is required in multiple locations: 1-1/4" hole saw holes are drilled on both sides of the front bumper (centered vertically and horizontally on the flat area), and 13/32" drill bit holes are drilled through the bumper using the attachment tab as a guide on both sides. Additional drilling may be needed to remove obstructions in the middle hole area.
Yes. On the plastic bumper cover, trim the lower outer edge flush with the bottom of the bumper using a utility knife. Also trim the vertical space between the protrusions for clearance of the baseplate tabs. Repeat on both sides of the vehicle. Additionally, trim the fascia opening for the attachment tabs and convenience links with a utility knife before reinstalling the fascia.
Yes. On the driver's side, the frame webbing must be bent outward using large vise grips after removing the 8MM bolt, far enough to fit the baseplate on top of it. After baseplate installation, the webbing bracket is bent back to its original position and the 10MM bolt is reinstalled.
Yes. On the passenger's side only, a reciprocating saw is used to remove the washer reservoir bracket and horn front bracket. The flexible intake cover is also removed using a T30 Torx and will not be reinstalled.
According to the bolt torque specifications chart, 3/8" Grade 5 bolts should be torqued to 33 foot-pounds. However, the manual states to tighten all bolts according to the torque chart provided unless specified otherwise, and to use Loctite Red on all bolt threads before tightening.

1. Using T27 Torx, remove two screws from driver's side front wheel well; remove push pin from same location. Repeat on passenger's side. 2. On fascia underside, remove two pushpins from outer edge and two rear screws (T27 Torx) on each side. 3. Remove two pushpins from front outer edge of fascia underside. 4. From top of fascia, remove inner-most bolt from each side (T30 Torx) and four pushpins. 5. Pry hood latch cable out of mounting bracket and rotate wire left to release. 6. Disconnect running lights main electrical cord on driver's side and carefully remove fascia.
Horn: Using a 10MM socket, remove the bolt from the passenger's side horn bracket and disconnect it. Washer reservoir: Using a 10MM socket, remove the two bolts from the washer reservoir on the passenger's side, disconnect all electrical connections, and remove and plug the fluid lines.
Slide the baseplate onto the vehicle until the top back hole aligns with the top back existing hole on the frame webbing. Insert a 3/8"-16 × 1-1/2" hex bolt and 3/8" lock washer with a 3/8"-16 nut plate. Secure the top front hole the same way. Do not tighten bolts all the way until directed. Repeat on both sides of the vehicle. Then insert a 3/8"-16 × 1-1/2" hex bolt and 3/8" lock washer with a 3/8"-16 nut plate into the middle hole on both sides, drilling out any obstructions with a 13/32" drill bit if necessary. Finally, tighten down all hardware to specified torque.
On the front of the baseplate, using the attachment tab as a guide, drill out the bumper with a 13/32" drill bit on both sides. Insert a 3/8"-16 × 1-1/2" hex bolt and 3/8" lock washer with a 3/8"-16 lock nut into each hole.
Washer reservoir: Reattach on the passenger's side using the existing bolt in the back. Use a 3/8"-16 × 1" hex bolt with a 3/8" flat washer and a 3/8" hex nut to secure the front hole to the baseplate. Horn: Use the existing hole in the frame webbing on the passenger's side and the existing hole on the horn bracket, and insert a 1/4-20 × 3/4" hex bolt with a 1/4" lock washer and 1/4-20 nut. Reattach all electrical connections.
Bend the webbing bracket back to its original position and reinstall the 10MM bolt.
The BX8869 Tail Light Wiring Kit is recommended for this vehicle. A hole must be drilled according to the tail light wiring kit instructions.
Be sure that all electrical connections are plugged in and accessories are functioning properly before reinstalling the fascia.
Use a good quality paint to spray cut edges of frame to prevent rusting.
Permanent baseplate safety cables are strongly recommended when towing a vehicle with a tow bar. Their function is to prevent the towed vehicle from breaking loose if the connection between the frame and baseplate fails. The cables must be connected from the baseplate to the frame rail or cross member of the vehicle's frame using the provided quicklinks and convenience link tabs. Do not mount the cables against wires, hoses, or brake lines. These cables should remain installed as long as the baseplate is installed and are supplementary to, not a replacement for, legally required safety cables attaching the towed vehicle to the towing vehicle.
Ensure all electrical connections are plugged in and accessories are functioning properly. Verify that the fascia is aligned as close to its original position as possible. Confirm that all bolts are tightened to the specified torque values using Loctite Red. Inspect that the permanent baseplate safety cables are properly secured to the frame and not against any wires, hoses, or brake lines.
It is the owner's responsibility to inspect all towing equipment for cracked welds, missing or worn parts, and loose bolts before each towing trip. Be sure to use Loctite Red on all bolts and tighten to the recommended specifications. Remove the attachment tabs when not in use.
If the baseplate is in an accident, it must be replaced. Do not use it again. An accident can cause unseen damage, and using it again could result in more damage or serious injury. Do not use the baseplate if it is damaged or missing parts.
Blue Ox offers a three-year limited warranty to the original retail purchaser covering defects in material and workmanship under normal use and service. The warranty is valid only if the customer warranty card is returned within 30 days of purchase and a copy of the original invoice accompanies any claim. The warranty does not cover incorrect or improper installation, improper use, modification, neglect, failure to maintain, misuse, accident, normal wear and tear, paint, or rust. No. Use only genuine factory replacement parts on the baseplate. Do not substitute homemade or non-typical parts. If a bolt is lost or needs replacement, use a replacement bolt of the same grade (in most cases Grade 5). Replacement parts may be ordered through your nearest Blue Ox Dealer or Distributor. Failing to follow these instructions or altering them will void the manufacturer's warranty.
