Blue Ox is known internationally for recreational and commercial towing products, manufacturing in Pender, Nebraska since 1925. The line covers tow bars and vehicle-specific baseplates for flat towing behind a motorhome, sway control and weight distributing hitches, supplemental braking accessories and towing wiring, backed by patented designs and long-standing customer service.
Blue Ox has manufactured since 1925 and is recognised internationally for towing products and customer service. The company operates from Pender, Nebraska, where it grew out of Automatic Manufacturing Co., a business that started with cattle oilers and developed into agricultural equipment, tractor accessories and trailer towing hardware. That agricultural engineering heritage still shows in how the towing products are built, and the company holds patents across weight distribution, fifth wheel and tow bar designs.
Flat towing is the discipline Blue Ox is best known for. Towing a car with all four wheels on the ground behind a motorhome demands a system that stays rigid under braking, articulates properly over uneven ground, and connects to the towed vehicle at points strong enough to take the load. Blue Ox tow bars handle the first two, with self-aligning arms that latch under tension and release without a struggle when the load is off them. Vehicle-specific baseplates handle the third, engineered per make and model to tie into structural mounting points behind the fascia.
The wider flat towing range covers supplemental braking systems, safety cables and the accessories that make a complete legal setup, along with baseplate wiring and dinghy towing harnesses that pass lighting signals to the towed vehicle without back-feeding its electrical system.
For conventional trailer towing, Blue Ox weight distributing hitches with integrated sway control transfer tongue load onto the tow vehicle's front axle and resist the yaw that crosswinds and passing trucks induce.
The company describes its foundation as customer service, designing around what owners actually ask for, and it runs an RV park adjacent to the factory where customers can stay. Sister operations at the same Nebraska site include Automatic grain roller mills and MAD-RAMPS pivoting ramp systems.

The BX2184 is a baseplate designed for 2005-07 Ford Focus vehicles with foglights. It is used as part of a towing system to attach a tow bar to the front of the vehicle. The baseplate has removable attachment tabs with a height of 13 inches and width of 18 inches.
Yes, the BX2184 is designed for 2005-07 Ford Focus vehicles that include foglights. If the front of your vehicle looks different than shown in the manual, contact Blue Ox at (402) 385-3051 before proceeding with installation.
Motorhome mount tow bars are recommended for use with the BX2184. The RangeFinderII, Adventurer, and Ambassador tow bars cannot be used due to the design of the removable tabs. The Acclaim tow bar may be used, but will not fold and store on the front of the vehicle. Adapters, except the BX8833 and BX8815, cannot be used with this baseplate.
The hardware kit includes: 8× 3/8-16 x 1 1/4" Grade 5 bolts (201-0368), 8× 3/8" lock washers (203-0010), 8× 3/8-16 hex nuts (202-0003), 1× 1/4-20 x 1" Grade 5 hex bolt (201-0071), 1× 1/4" flat washer (203-0001), 1× 1/4" lock washer (203-0008), 1× 1/4-20 hex nut (202-0001), 2× #12-14 x 1" self-drilling screws (201-0979), 2× 10-32 x 1/2" round head screws (201-0192), 2× #10 lock washers (203-0054), 2× #10-32 hex nuts (202-0047), 2× 4-way connector adapters (101-5822), 2× attachment assemblies (62-3468), 2× 36" Class III baseplate safety cables (226-0046), 2× 3/8" quicklinks (229-0359), and 2× receiver cap plugs (290-0437).
Required tools include: 6mm, 7mm, 8mm, 10mm, 7/16", and 9/16" sockets; 13/32" drill bit; 30 Torx socket; Phillips and flat screwdrivers; vise grips; utility knife; and Loctite RED. A power drill is needed for drilling the four corner holes into the frame webbing.
The following components must be removed: radiator cover, grille assembly, belly pan, fascia, coolant line bracket (passenger's side), air baffle, and air dams. All fasteners and components should be set aside for reinstallation. Reinstallation of air dams is optional; if reinstalled, trimming is required.
Yes. Blue Ox towing products are intended to be installed by Blue Ox Dealers who are familiar with the products and have the equipment and knowledge to do "fit work". Blue Ox Dealers can be found at www.blueox.com or by contacting the Customer Care Department at (402) 385-3051.
Yes. Drilling is required. Using a 13/32" drill bit, four corner holes must be drilled into the frame webbing to mount the baseplate. The baseplate is used as a template to mark the hole locations. When using power drills, be aware of the dangers of torque and drill bit length.
Trimming of the air dams is required if they are reinstalled. The air dams may be held just below their original location, marked, and trimmed to allow the baseplate to fit. Alternatively, air dams may be left off the vehicle entirely.
The manual references a torque chart on the front page or page 3 of the baseplate towing general instructions, but the specific torque value for 3/8-16 Grade 5 bolts is not provided in this installation manual. Consult the general towing instructions or contact Blue Ox at (402) 385-3051 for the correct torque specification.
The manual does not specify the torque value for the 1/4-20 bolt used to reinstall the coolant bracket. Consult the general towing instructions or contact Blue Ox at (402) 385-3051 for the correct torque specification. Loctite RED must be applied to this bolt before tightening.
Slide the baseplate onto the frame rails 1 1/2" back from the bumper bracket, aligning the front air baffle hole with the front middle hole of the baseplate. Align the top edge of the endplate with the top edge of the frame rail and clamp in place using large vise grips. Hold the fascia up to its original position and verify the convenience links, electrical rods and attachment tabs come through the fascia opening.
1. Clamp the baseplate in position using vise grips. 2. Using the baseplate as a template, drill four corner holes into the frame webbing with a 13/32" drill bit. 3. Insert 3/8-16 x 1 1/4" hex bolts into the holes. 4. Apply Loctite RED to all bolts before tightening. 5. Tighten bolts to 1/4" lock washers and 3/8-16 hex nuts according to the torque chart. When using power drills, be aware of the dangers of torque and drill bit length.
On the passenger's side, reinstall the coolant bracket to the lower endplate hole. Put a 1/4" flat washer on the 1/4-20 x 1" hex bolt and insert into the hole. Tighten to the 1/4" lock washer and 1/4-20 hex nut using a 7/16" socket. Do not attach the coolant line to the top bracket if it causes the line to rub against the baseplate. Models with a low emission device need to reposition the device with a wire tie.
Reinstall the air baffle to the middle endplate hole on the driver's side with the existing bolts and clamp. If necessary, remove the rubber grommet from the bolt to tighten it properly.
Yes. The BX8869 Bulb and Socket Wiring Kit is recommended for this vehicle. Ensure all electrical connections are plugged in properly and functioning before installing the fascia.
Confirm the towability and pre-towing procedures for your vehicle with the owner's manual or contact the vehicle's manufacturer for specific towing procedures. Read both the BX2184 Installation Instructions and the General Towing Instructions before attempting to install or operate this equipment. Do not use the towed vehicle for storing luggage, equipment, etc., as this may cause you to exceed the towing capacity of the tow bar, baseplate, and its accessories.
Permanent baseplate safety cables are strongly recommended when towing a vehicle with a tow bar. The BX2184 kit includes 2× 36" Class III baseplate safety cables (226-0046) and 2× 3/8" quicklinks (229-0359). The cables must be connected from the baseplate to the frame rail or cross member of the vehicle's frame. Do not mount the cables against wires, hoses or brake lines. These cables should remain installed as long as the baseplate is installed and are to be used in conjunction with, not as a replacement for, legally required safety cables attaching the towed vehicle to the towing vehicle.
If the baseplate is in an accident, it must be replaced. Do not use it again. An accident can cause unseen damage and using it again could result in more damage or serious injury. Do not use the baseplate if it is damaged or missing parts.
Before each towing trip, inspect all towing equipment for cracked welds, missing or worn parts and loose bolts. Ensure all electrical connections are plugged in properly and functioning. Verify that the tow bar and safety cables are installed according to their package instructions. Install the tow bar and safety cables according to the instructions provided in their packages.
It is the owner's responsibility to inspect all towing equipment for cracked welds, missing or worn parts and loose bolts before each towing trip. Be sure to use Loctite Red on all bolts and tighten to the recommended specifications. Register your product online at www.blueox.com to be alerted of product offerings, updates, upgrades, maintenance and safety bulletins, and/or recalls.
If a bolt is lost or in need of replacement, use a replacement bolt of the same grade. In most cases it will be Grade 5. Replacement parts may be ordered through your nearest Blue Ox Dealer or Distributor. Do not substitute homemade or non-typical parts. Using the correct grade bolt is essential for your safety and the preservation of your baseplate.
Failing to follow and/or altering these installation instructions in either installation or required equipment will void the manufacturer's warranty. Towing behind a non-motorized vehicle will also void the warranty.
The BX2184 is designed for 2005-07 Ford Focus vehicles with foglights. If your vehicle's front looks different, contact Blue Ox at (402) 385-3051 before installing.
Motorhome mount tow bars are recommended. RangeFinderII, Adventurer, and Ambassador tow bars cannot be used. Acclaim tow bar may be used but will not fold and store. Most adapters cannot be used except BX8833 and BX8815.
You will need metric sockets (6mm, 7mm, 8mm, 10mm), standard sockets (7/16", 9/16"), 30 Torx socket, 13/32" drill bit, Phillips and flat screwdrivers, vise grips, utility knife, and Loctite RED. A power drill is required for drilling frame holes.
Professional installation by a Blue Ox Dealer is recommended. They have the equipment and knowledge to do the "fit work" required. Find a dealer at www.blueox.com or call (402) 385-3051.
Yes. Two 36" Class III baseplate safety cables and two 3/8" quicklinks are included. These are strongly recommended and must be connected from the baseplate to the vehicle's frame rail or cross member.
The BX8869 Bulb and Socket Wiring Kit is recommended for this vehicle. Ensure all electrical connections are plugged in properly and functioning before reinstalling the fascia.
Before each towing trip, inspect for cracked welds, missing or worn parts, and loose bolts. Use Loctite Red on all bolts and tighten to specification. Register your product at www.blueox.com for updates and safety bulletins.
