Blue Ox is known internationally for recreational and commercial towing products, manufacturing in Pender, Nebraska since 1925. The line covers tow bars and vehicle-specific baseplates for flat towing behind a motorhome, sway control and weight distributing hitches, supplemental braking accessories and towing wiring, backed by patented designs and long-standing customer service.
Blue Ox has manufactured since 1925 and is recognised internationally for towing products and customer service. The company operates from Pender, Nebraska, where it grew out of Automatic Manufacturing Co., a business that started with cattle oilers and developed into agricultural equipment, tractor accessories and trailer towing hardware. That agricultural engineering heritage still shows in how the towing products are built, and the company holds patents across weight distribution, fifth wheel and tow bar designs.
Flat towing is the discipline Blue Ox is best known for. Towing a car with all four wheels on the ground behind a motorhome demands a system that stays rigid under braking, articulates properly over uneven ground, and connects to the towed vehicle at points strong enough to take the load. Blue Ox tow bars handle the first two, with self-aligning arms that latch under tension and release without a struggle when the load is off them. Vehicle-specific baseplates handle the third, engineered per make and model to tie into structural mounting points behind the fascia.
The wider flat towing range covers supplemental braking systems, safety cables and the accessories that make a complete legal setup, along with baseplate wiring and dinghy towing harnesses that pass lighting signals to the towed vehicle without back-feeding its electrical system.
For conventional trailer towing, Blue Ox weight distributing hitches with integrated sway control transfer tongue load onto the tow vehicle's front axle and resist the yaw that crosswinds and passing trucks induce.
The company describes its foundation as customer service, designing around what owners actually ask for, and it runs an RV park adjacent to the factory where customers can stay. Sister operations at the same Nebraska site include Automatic grain roller mills and MAD-RAMPS pivoting ramp systems.

Dealers can be found at www.blueox.com or by contacting Blue Ox Technical Service at (402) 385-3051. However, the manual does not explicitly prohibit DIY installation.
The following components must be removed and reinstalled: front fascia, both headlights, windshield washer fluid reservoir, and latch support brace. For SFE models, the shutter shrouding front and back sections must also be removed (the back section will not be reinstalled). All removed items should be placed on a flat, sturdy surface.
Yes, drilling is required. You must drill the front baseplate hole through the frame using a 13/32" drill bit (Step 17), drill the back baseplate holes through the frame using a 13/32" drill bit (Step 18), drill three additional holes towards the back of the plate using a 13/32" drill bit (Step 18), and drill an access hole on top of the bumper using a 1-1/4" hole saw on both sides (Step 16). The manual also recommends drilling a hole for the tail light wiring kit (BX8869) according to that kit's instructions.
Yes, trimming is required. For ST/SE models, trim the upper shrouding on both sides for baseplate clearance (Step 9). For all models, trim the face of the frame extension just below the rib back to the face of the frame on both sides (Step 15). For SFE models, trim the upper section of the shutter system flush with the base (Step 12) and trim the shutter rod flush with the base (Step 13). On the backside of the fascia, trim the inner layer along the outer groove on both sides, being careful not to cut into the outer layer (Step 23). Finally, mark and trim the fascia around the convenience links and attachment tabs (Step 24).
When using power drills, be aware of the dangers of torque and drill bit length. When using a reciprocating saw, be aware of objects behind the cutting surface. When trimming the frame extension, be aware of lines behind the face when cutting. When trimming the fascia, be careful not to cut into the outer layer. After drilling, use a good quality paint to spray cut edges of the frame to prevent rusting.
Follow this sequence: (1) Remove four Phillips head push pins from the top edge of the fascia (two on each side). (2) Using T25 Torx, remove two screws from the wheel well on both sides. (3) Using 8MM socket, remove one screw from the upper edge of the wheel well on both sides. (4) Using 7MM socket, remove five screws from the underside of the fascia (two in each corner, one in the middle). (5) Using T30 Torx, remove two screws from each headlight, disconnect electrical lines, and set headlights aside. (6) Using 8MM socket, remove two screws from the edge of the fascia underneath each headlight. (7) Remove the fascia, disconnecting all electrical connections.
Position the baseplate onto the frame, flushing the bottom of the baseplate and frame together. Leave a 1/2" gap from the front of the baseplate and the backside of the bumper. Level and clamp the baseplate into position before drilling.
First, drill the back baseplate holes through the frame using a 13/32" drill bit. Bolt the support bracket to the baseplate/frame with 3/8"-16 x 2" bolts, 3/8" lock washers, and 3/8" nut plates. Fully tighten these fasteners. Then drill the remaining three holes towards the back of the plate through the frame. Install 3/8"-16 x 2" bolts with 3/8" lock washers into the holes with 3/8" nut plates on the inside of the frame. Fully tighten all fasteners. Do this on both sides of the vehicle.
The manual provides general torque charts for metric and inch bolts by grade. For Grade 5 bolts: 1/4" = 10 ft-lbs, 5/16" = 19 ft-lbs, 3/8" = 33 ft-lbs, 7/16" = 54 ft-lbs, 1/2" = 78 ft-lbs, 5/8" = 154 ft-lbs, 3/4" = 257 ft-lbs. For Grade 8 bolts: 1/4" = 14 ft-lbs, 5/16" = 29 ft-lbs, 3/8" = 47 ft-lbs, 7/16" = 78 ft-lbs, 1/2" = 119 ft-lbs, 5/8" = 230 ft-lbs, 3/4" = 380 ft-lbs. For metric Grade 8.8 bolts: 6MM = 6 ft-lbs, 8MM = 16 ft-lbs, 10MM = 31 ft-lbs, 12MM = 54 ft-lbs, 14MM = 89 ft-lbs, 16MM = 161 ft-lbs, 18MM = 222 ft-lbs. For metric Grade 10.9 bolts: 6MM = 8 ft-lbs, 8MM = 22 ft-lbs, 10MM = 40 ft-lbs, 12MM = 70 ft-lbs, 14MM = 117 ft-lbs, 16MM = 230 ft-lbs, 18MM = 318 ft-lbs. All bolts must be tightened with Loctite Red applied to the threads.
The baseplate is computer tested to your vehicle's GVWR. Exceeding this weight will void the manufacturer's warranty. You should reference your vehicle owner's manual for the manufacturer's towing specifications.
Yes. The BX2650 kit includes two Class III safety cables (part 226-0046) and two 3/8" quicklinks (part 229-0359). These permanent baseplate safety cables must be attached from the baseplate to the frame rail or cross member of the vehicle's frame. The cables are strongly recommended to prevent the towed vehicle from breaking loose if the connection between the frame and baseplate fails. The cables must not be mounted against wires, hoses, or brake lines, and must remain installed as long as the baseplate is on the vehicle. These cables are in addition to, not a replacement for, legally required safety cables attaching the towed vehicle to the towing vehicle.
Attach the permanent baseplate safety cables to the provided convenience link on the baseplate. The photo in Step 19 shows the recommended installation of the cables to the frame of the vehicle. Additional options may interfere with suggested mounting; in case of interference, secure the cables to a solid piece of the frame as described in the instructions included with the permanent baseplate safety cables. Be sure the safety cables do not rub against any hoses or moving parts. Install on both sides of the vehicle.
After reinstalling the washer reservoir, check the clearance on the lower part of the reservoir to ensure it is not rubbing on the baseplate. It should have a minimum 1/16" clearance. If necessary, pull the reservoir back and re-tighten the bolts. Before reinstalling the fascia, be sure that all electrical connections are plugged in and accessories are functioning properly.
Before reinstalling the fascia, ensure that all electrical connections are plugged in and all accessories are functioning properly. This includes verifying that the headlights, washer system, and any other electrical components work correctly.
It is the owner's responsibility to inspect all towing equipment for cracked welds, missing or worn parts, and loose bolts before each towing trip. Be sure to use Loctite Red on all bolts and tighten to the recommended torque specifications. The attachment tabs should be removed when not in use. If the baseplate is in an accident, it must be replaced and cannot be reused, as an accident can cause unseen damage.
If the baseplate is in an accident, it must be replaced. Do not use it again. An accident can cause unseen damage, and using it again could result in more damage or serious injury. Do not use the baseplate if it is damaged or missing parts.
No. Use only genuine factory replacement parts on your baseplate. Do not substitute homemade or non-typical parts. If a bolt is lost or needs replacement, use a replacement bolt of the same grade (in most cases Grade 5). Replacement parts may be ordered through your nearest Blue Ox Dealer or Distributor. Failing to follow this requirement will void the manufacturer's warranty.
The BX8869 Tail Light Wiring Kit is recommended for the BX2650 on the 2014-2019 Ford Fiesta. If you use it, you must drill a hole according to the tail light wiring kit instructions.
For SFE models: (1) Remove four push pins from the shutter shrouding (one on each side and two in the middle). (2) On the driver side only, remove the temperature sensor and set aside. (3) Unsnap two clips on top of the shutter shrouding and remove the front section. (4) Remove the back half of the shrouding from the vehicle (this will not be reinstalled). (5) Using a flat screwdriver, disconnect the back rod from the shutter system. (6) Trim the upper section of the shutter system flush with the base. (7) Pull up on the shutter rod and trim it flush with the base. (8) On the driver side, using an 8MM socket, remove two screws from the fuse box and set it aside. (9) During reassembly, install the supplied bracket to the frame with the existing bolt, then install the fuse box to the bracket with a 1/4"-20 bolt (length not specified in manual).
For ST/SE models, trim the upper shrouding as shown for baseplate clearance on both sides of the vehicle (Step 9). These models do not have the shutter shrouding removal steps required for SFE models.
Breakaway switch installation is optional. If you choose to install it, install the breakaway bracket to the lower support brace using the existing bolt, then bolt the breakaway to the bracket with a 1/4"-20 x 3/4" bolt and 1/4" lock nut (Step 22).
