Blue Ox is known internationally for recreational and commercial towing products, manufacturing in Pender, Nebraska since 1925. The line covers tow bars and vehicle-specific baseplates for flat towing behind a motorhome, sway control and weight distributing hitches, supplemental braking accessories and towing wiring, backed by patented designs and long-standing customer service.
Blue Ox has manufactured since 1925 and is recognised internationally for towing products and customer service. The company operates from Pender, Nebraska, where it grew out of Automatic Manufacturing Co., a business that started with cattle oilers and developed into agricultural equipment, tractor accessories and trailer towing hardware. That agricultural engineering heritage still shows in how the towing products are built, and the company holds patents across weight distribution, fifth wheel and tow bar designs.
Flat towing is the discipline Blue Ox is best known for. Towing a car with all four wheels on the ground behind a motorhome demands a system that stays rigid under braking, articulates properly over uneven ground, and connects to the towed vehicle at points strong enough to take the load. Blue Ox tow bars handle the first two, with self-aligning arms that latch under tension and release without a struggle when the load is off them. Vehicle-specific baseplates handle the third, engineered per make and model to tie into structural mounting points behind the fascia.
The wider flat towing range covers supplemental braking systems, safety cables and the accessories that make a complete legal setup, along with baseplate wiring and dinghy towing harnesses that pass lighting signals to the towed vehicle without back-feeding its electrical system.
For conventional trailer towing, Blue Ox weight distributing hitches with integrated sway control transfer tongue load onto the tow vehicle's front axle and resist the yaw that crosswinds and passing trucks induce.
The company describes its foundation as customer service, designing around what owners actually ask for, and it runs an RV park adjacent to the factory where customers can stay. Sister operations at the same Nebraska site include Automatic grain roller mills and MAD-RAMPS pivoting ramp systems.

The BX2514 baseplate is designed for 1996–2001 Mazda Miata models. Confirm your vehicle year falls within this range before purchasing.
The kit includes: one weldment baseplate (61-5263), two mount brackets (one driver side 101-5825, one passenger side 101-5824), four 1/2-13 X 2 3/4 hex bolts Grade 5, six 10mm-1.25 X 35mm hex bolts Grade 8, four 1/2-13 hex nuts, four 1/2 flat washers, four 1/2 lock washers, four 10mm flat washers, six 7/16 lock washers, two 36-inch baseplate safety cables (Class III), and four 3/8 quicklinks (zinc plated). The General Instruction Sheet is also included and must be read before installation.
You will need: 10mm wrench, 3/4 inch wrench, Phillips screwdriver, and Loctite Blue. These are the minimum tools listed in the manual.
Yes. The bumper must be removed as the first step of installation. This involves removing bolts from the top aluminum piece, six phillips hex head screws from the bumper molding, additional phillips screws from inside the fender well, three rectangular push pins and plastic phillips push pins from the grill opening, and phillips screws from the sides of the bumper molding in the fender well area. The bumper molding is then pulled outward and disconnected from plastic ball connectors.
Yes. The factory tow hooks must be removed. The mount brackets are then bolted in their place using the provided 10MM X 35MM hex head bolts, flat washers, lock washers, and Loctite Blue.
1. Remove the bumper and all fasteners as detailed in steps 2–6. 2. Remove the tow hooks. 3. Bolt the mount brackets in place with 10MM X 35MM hex head bolts, flat washers, lock washers, and Loctite Blue; do not tighten completely. 4. Mount the main frame to the mount brackets using 1/2 X 2 3/4 hex head bolts, flat washers, lock washers, hex nuts, and Loctite Blue; tighten completely. 5. Return and fully tighten the 10MM X 35MM hex bolts. 6. Reinstall the bumper molding, plastic ball connectors, phillips screws, and push pins. 7. Install the tow bar and safety cables per their instructions.
The 10MM X 35MM hex head bolts securing the mount brackets to the tow hooks are left loose initially to allow alignment of the main frame. After the main frame is mounted to the brackets with the 1/2 X 2 3/4 bolts and tightened completely, you then return and fully tighten the 10MM X 35MM bolts.
Yes. Loctite Blue must be applied to both the 10MM X 35MM hex head bolts securing the mount brackets and the 1/2 X 2 3/4 hex head bolts securing the main frame to the brackets. The manual explicitly states 'Be sure to use Loctite on each of the bolts' for both fastener types.
Permanent baseplate safety cables are strongly recommended but not included as a mandatory requirement in the installation steps. The kit includes two 36-inch Class III baseplate safety cables (part 226-0046) and four 3/8 quicklinks. These cables must be connected from the baseplate to the frame rail or cross member of the vehicle's frame and must not be mounted against wires, hoses, or brake lines. They are to be used in conjunction with, and NOT as a replacement for, legally required safety cables attaching the towed vehicle to the towing vehicle.
Before each towing trip, inspect all towing equipment for: cracked welds, missing or worn parts, and loose bolts. Ensure all bolts are tightened to the recommended specifications using Loctite Red. It is the owner's responsibility to perform these inspections.
Only tow bars approved by Automatic Equipment Mfg. Co. are compatible with the BX2514 baseplate. Use of any tow bar not approved by Automatic Equipment Mfg. Co. invalidates the limited warranty. Consult the manufacturer or your dealer to confirm tow bar compatibility.
Yes. The manual explicitly states 'Read the General Instruction Sheet included with this baseplate' as step 1. The dealer or installer must ensure the user receives this instruction sheet. The General Instruction Sheet contains information not detailed in the BX2514-specific instructions.
Do not mount the permanent baseplate safety cables against wires, hoses, or brake lines. If the baseplate is improperly installed and comes into contact with a wire or hose, it could cause fluid leaks or electrical shorts some time after installation. As the installer, you are responsible for watching for oil cooler and air conditioner lines, electrical wires and hoses, and missing parts or attaching points on the frame.
Yes. You should register your baseplate online at www.blueox.com. Registration is crucial so that you may be alerted of product offerings, updates, upgrades, maintenance and safety bulletins, and/or recalls.
Yes. The manual states 'Remove the attachment tabs when not in use (if applicable).' This applies if your baseplate has attachment tabs.
Yes, the BX2514 is designed for 1996–2001 Mazda Miata models only.
Yes, the bumper must be removed as the first step. You will also need to remove the factory tow hooks.
You need a 10mm wrench, 3/4 inch wrench, Phillips screwdriver, and Loctite Blue.
Yes, Loctite Blue must be applied to both the 10MM X 35MM mount bracket bolts and the 1/2 X 2 3/4 main frame bolts.
Yes, two 36-inch Class III baseplate safety cables and four 3/8 quicklinks are included. These are strongly recommended and must be connected from the baseplate to the vehicle's frame rail or cross member.
