Blue Ox has manufactured since 1925 and is recognised internationally for towing products and customer service. Yes, drilling is required. You must drill a 1/4" pilot hole in the bumper, then use a 1-1/4" hole saw to drill through the bumper and frame for nut plate access on both sides. Additionally, you must drill two 13/32" holes on the underside of the baseplate through the frame (one on each side) and eight 13/32" holes on the sides of the baseplate through the frame (four on each side).
Yes. The fascia must be trimmed around the convenience links and attachment tabs after baseplate installation. Additionally, the lower frame extension requires cutting: using a reciprocating saw, cut two slits on the flange back to the face of the frame on both sides. The lower shrouding will not be reinstalled.
Yes. After cutting two slits on the lower frame extension flange using a reciprocating saw, you must use vise-grips to bend the flange down so it is flush with the face of the frame. This must be done on both sides of the vehicle.
When using power drills, be aware of the dangers of torque and drill bit length. When using a reciprocating saw, be aware of objects behind the cutting surface. After drilling, use a good quality paint to spray cut edges of frame to prevent rusting.
1. Using a 10MM socket, remove the screw from the top edge of the fascia (white) and the push pin (gray) on both sides. 2. Using an 8MM socket, remove the screw from the edge of the wheel well on both sides. 3. Using an 8MM socket, remove six screws from the underside of the fascia (two on each side inset, two in the middle). 4. Pry the corners of the fascia away and disconnect all electrical connections. 5. Pull the fascia off. 6. Remove the push pin from the styrofoam reinforcement on both sides and set it aside.
Position the baseplate onto the vehicle and start the four 8MM bolts with 5/16" lock and flat washers into the existing frame extension holes (two on each side). Push the baseplate back and up tight against the frame and clamp in place. Fully tighten the lower frame extension bolts. Then drill the two 13/32" holes on the underside of the baseplate through the frame (one on each side) and install 3/8"-16 x 1-1/4" bolts with 3/8" lock washers, securing with 3/8" nut plates on the inside of the frame.
A total of 12 bolts secure the baseplate: 4 bolts (8MM-1.25 x 35MM) in the lower frame extension holes (two on each side), 2 bolts (3/8"-16 x 1-1/4") on the underside of the baseplate through the frame (one on each side), and 8 bolts (3/8"-16 x 1-1/4") on the sides of the baseplate through the frame (four on each side).
According to the torque chart provided, 8MM Grade 5 bolts should be torqued to 16 foot-pounds, and 8MM Grade 8.8 bolts should be torqued to 22 foot-pounds. The 8MM-1.25 x 35MM bolts used in the frame extension are Grade 5. Always use Loctite Red on all bolts before tightening.
According to the torque chart provided, 3/8" Grade 5 bolts should be torqued to 33 foot-pounds, and 3/8" Grade 8 bolts should be torqued to 47 foot-pounds. The 3/8"-16 x 1-1/4" bolts used in the baseplate are Grade 5. Always use Loctite Red on all bolts before tightening.
The following must be removed: fascia (with all electrical connections disconnected), styrofoam reinforcement, temperature sensor from the bumper, lower shrouding (which will not be reinstalled), and four screws from the lower frame extension. Place all removed items on a flat, sturdy surface; all items except the lower shrouding will be reinstalled after baseplate installation.
Yes, the temperature sensor must be reinstalled. It is removed in Step 5 and then reinstalled in Step 10 after the baseplate bolts are installed.

Permanent baseplate safety cables are strongly recommended when towing a vehicle with a tow bar. They prevent the towed vehicle from breaking loose if the connection between the frame and baseplate fails. The cables must be connected from the baseplate to the frame rail or cross member. Each cable must have an adequate weight rating; the combined rating of two cables is required. Safety cables must not be mounted against wires, hoses, or brake lines, and must not rub against hoses or moving parts.
Attach the permanent baseplate safety cables to the provided convenience link on the baseplate. The manual shows recommended installation of the cables to the frame of the vehicle. Additional options may interfere with suggested mounting; in that case, secure the cables to a solid piece of the frame as described in the instructions included with the permanent baseplate safety cables. Install on both sides of the vehicle. Ensure the safety cables do not rub against any hoses or moving parts.
Before each towing trip, inspect all towing equipment for cracked welds, missing or worn parts, and loose bolts. Use Loctite Red on all bolts and tighten to the recommended torque specifications. Ensure all electrical connections are plugged in and accessories are functioning properly.
If the baseplate is damaged or in an accident, it must be replaced. Do not use it again. An accident can cause unseen damage, and using it again could result in more damage or serious injury. Do not use the baseplate if it is damaged or missing parts.
The installer must watch for oil cooler and air conditioner lines, electrical wires, and hoses. The baseplate must not be positioned against these components. If the baseplate is improperly installed against a wire or hose, it could cause fluid leaks or electrical shorts some time after installation. Permanent baseplate safety cables must not be mounted against wires, hoses, or brake lines.
