Blue Ox has manufactured since 1925 and is recognised internationally for towing products and customer service. The company operates from Pender, Nebraska, where it grew out of Automatic Manufacturing Co., a business that started with cattle oilers and developed into agricultural equipment, tractor accessories and trailer towing hardware. That agricultural engineering heritage still shows in how the towing products are built, and the company holds patents across weight distribution, fifth wheel and tow bar designs.
Flat towing is the discipline Blue Ox is best known for. Towing a car with all four wheels on the ground behind a motorhome demands a system that stays rigid under braking, articulates properly over uneven ground, and connects to the towed vehicle at points strong enough to take the load. Blue Ox tow bars handle the first two, with self-aligning arms that latch under tension and release without a struggle when the load is off them. Vehicle-specific baseplates handle the third, engineered per make and model to tie into structural mounting points behind the fascia.
The wider flat towing range covers supplemental braking systems, safety cables and the accessories that make a complete legal setup, along with baseplate wiring and dinghy towing harnesses that pass lighting signals to the towed vehicle without back-feeding its electrical system.

The baseplate kit includes: 2 nut plate weldments, 1 baseplate weldment, 2 bolts (1/2-13 x 1 1/2 hex, Grade 5), 4 bolts (12mm-1.25 x 40mm hex, Grade 8.8), 4 hex nuts (12mm-1.25), 10 flat washers (1/2 inch), 2 lock washers (1/2 inch), 4 lock washers (12mm), and 4 washers (1.5 OD x 0.531 ID x 1/4 inch). The four bolts that attach the bumper to the frame are reused.
Each bumper mount must be moved inward 1/4 inch. The bumper mounts are slotted to allow adjustment. Before loosening the bolts, make a reference mark on the bumper to measure the movement accurately. Loosen one side, move it in 1/4 inch, and tighten. Then loosen the other side, move it in 1/4 inch, but only tighten enough to hold it in position until after the bumper is remounted to the frame.
The kit includes six 1/2 inch flat washers and four 1/4 inch thick washers to fill the gap between the outside rear mounts and the bottom of the pickup frame. Stack the required washers in the gap as needed, as the gap may vary between sides. These washers are used with the 1/2 x 1 1/2 bolts and lock washers in the rear mounts.
Yes, Loctite Red must be applied to all bolts. The manual specifies using Loctite Red on the 12mm bolts that attach the baseplate to the bumper mounts and on the 1/2 inch bolts in the rear mounts. Loctite should be applied before starting the bolts.
The tightening sequence is: (1) In Step 8, snug the 1/2 inch rear mount bolts only enough to hold the baseplate in position while the temporary 12mm bolts are removed. (2) In Step 9, apply Loctite and start the 12mm bolts through the holes from inside out, using a 1/2 inch flat washer and lock washer under each nut. (3) In Step 10, check the bumper position against your measurements from Step 3, then completely tighten the four 12mm bolts, the bolts holding the bumper mount to the bumper, and the two 1/2 inch rear mount bolts.
The nut plates are positioned in the frame slots with the weld nut facing up. You can guide the nut plate up through the slot in the frame. Additional access to the nut plate can be made through a triangular opening on the side of the frame.
Dimensional variations between vehicles may require minor adjustments. If a bolt does not clear a hole, you may need to file the hole slightly to allow the bolt to pass through. This is a normal part of installation for some vehicles.
Before removing the four bumper bolts, remove the turn signal bulbs from the lenses in the bumper. This prevents damage to the bulbs and lenses during bumper removal.
Permanent baseplate safety cables are strongly recommended when towing a vehicle with a tow bar. These cables prevent the towed vehicle from breaking loose if the connection between the frame and baseplate fails. The cables must connect from the baseplate to the frame rail or cross member. Each cable must have an adequate weight rating for the towing system; the combined rating of both cables together does not qualify. Permanent safety cables must be used in addition to, not as a replacement for, legally required safety cables attaching the towed vehicle to the towing vehicle.
Do not mount the permanent baseplate safety cables against wires, hoses, or brake lines. If the baseplate or cables contact these components, it could cause fluid leaks or electrical shorts sometime after installation. As the installer, you are responsible for watching for oil cooler lines, air conditioner lines, electrical wires, hoses, and missing frame attachment points.
Before each towing trip, inspect all towing equipment for: cracked welds, missing or worn parts, and loose bolts. Ensure all bolts are tightened to the recommended specifications and that Loctite Red has been applied. This is the owner's responsibility.
