Blue Ox is known internationally for recreational and commercial towing products, manufacturing in Pender, Nebraska since 1925. The line covers tow bars and vehicle-specific baseplates for flat towing behind a motorhome, sway control and weight distributing hitches, supplemental braking accessories and towing wiring, backed by patented designs and long-standing customer service.
Blue Ox has manufactured since 1925 and is recognised internationally for towing products and customer service. The BX8869 Bulb and Socket Wiring Kit is recommended for the 2010-12 Mazda 5, but not stated as required. The manual indicates it is a recommended accessory for this vehicle.
The following components must be removed: fascia, foglights, horn bracket, windshield washer reservoir, air dams, and temperature sensor. The washer reservoir requires trimming (1/4" trim on the reservoir tab). The air dams will not be reinstalled. All other components are reinstalled after baseplate installation.
1. Remove two Phillips screws from the top of the fascia and pry up the pushpin tabs using a flat screwdriver to release them. 2. Remove three Phillips push pins from inside the wheel well on each side, just forward of the front tire. 3. Pull the wheel well cover aside and remove one metric bolt from each side of the fascia using an 8MM socket. 4. Remove ten metric bolts from the underside of the fascia (four each side and two from center) using an 8MM socket. Lift up on tabs behind the top edge, pull fascia corners out to release clips, then pull forward to remove. Disconnect foglights if applicable.
On the driver's side, remove one metric bolt from the horn bracket using a 12MM socket. Disconnect the electrical connector and release the clip. Set the horn bracket and bolt aside for reinstallation. After baseplate installation, the horn bracket must be trimmed so it fits beside the baseplate, reversed, and the little tab at the top removed before reattaching with the existing bolt.
On the passenger's side washer reservoir, mark 1/4" in on the reservoir tab and trim away with a utility knife. Then reinstall the washer reservoir to its original location.
Yes, drilling is required. Using the baseplate as a template, you must drill three holes into the side of the frame rail and one hole on the bottom of each side using a 13/32" drill bit. Additionally, a 3/8" hole must be drilled for the temperature sensor backing plate. A 1 1/4" hole saw is also required for other drilling operations.
The grille must be marked and trimmed to allow the attachment tabs and convenience links to come through. Specific dimensions for this trim are not detailed in the manual; the installer should hold the fascia up to its original position and mark where trimming is needed.

The breakaway bracket is attached to the bottom of the vehicle bumper using 1/4-20 x 3/4" hex bolts (Grade 5) and 1/4-20 hex nylon nuts. Two bolts and two nuts are required.
Just in front of the radiator, release the clips and disconnect the temperature sensor. After the baseplate is positioned, slide a backing plate behind the brace in front of the radiator, drill a 3/8" hole, and reattach the temperature sensor.
If the baseplate is in an accident, it must be replaced and not reused. An accident can cause unseen damage, and using it again could result in more damage or serious injury. Do not use the baseplate if it is damaged or missing parts.
Permanent baseplate safety cables are strongly recommended when towing a vehicle with a tow bar. They prevent the towed vehicle from breaking loose if the connection between the frame and baseplate fails. The cables must be connected from the baseplate to the frame rail or cross member. However, permanent baseplate safety cables are to be used in conjunction with, and not as a replacement for, legally required safety cables attaching the towed vehicle to the towing vehicle.
Attach the permanent baseplate safety cables to the provided convenience link on the baseplate. The cables should be secured to a solid piece of the vehicle's frame. The manual shows the recommended installation attaching the cables to the frame of the vehicle. If the vehicle has additional options that interfere with mounting the cables, secure the cable to a solid piece of the vehicle's frame as described in the instructions included with the permanent baseplate safety cables. Do not mount the cables against wires, hoses or brake lines.
Before installing the fascia, be sure that all electrical connections are plugged in properly and functioning. This should be verified before reinstalling the fascia, foglights, push pins, screws and bolts.
It is the owner's responsibility to inspect all towing equipment for cracked welds, missing or worn parts and loose bolts before each towing trip. Be sure to use Loctite RED on all bolts and tighten to the recommended specifications. Remove the attachment tabs when not in use if applicable. No. Use only genuine factory replacement parts on your baseplate. Do not substitute homemade or non-typical parts. If a bolt is lost or needs replacement, use a replacement bolt of the same grade (in most cases Grade 5). Replacement parts may be ordered through your nearest Blue Ox Dealer or Distributor.
