Blue Ox is known internationally for recreational and commercial towing products, manufacturing in Pender, Nebraska since 1925. The line covers tow bars and vehicle-specific baseplates for flat towing behind a motorhome, sway control and weight distributing hitches, supplemental braking accessories and towing wiring, backed by patented designs and long-standing customer service.
Blue Ox has manufactured since 1925 and is recognised internationally for towing products and customer service. The company operates from Pender, Nebraska, where it grew out of Automatic Manufacturing Co., a business that started with cattle oilers and developed into agricultural equipment, tractor accessories and trailer towing hardware. That agricultural engineering heritage still shows in how the towing products are built, and the company holds patents across weight distribution, fifth wheel and tow bar designs.
Flat towing is the discipline Blue Ox is best known for. Towing a car with all four wheels on the ground behind a motorhome demands a system that stays rigid under braking, articulates properly over uneven ground, and connects to the towed vehicle at points strong enough to take the load. Blue Ox tow bars handle the first two, with self-aligning arms that latch under tension and release without a struggle when the load is off them. Vehicle-specific baseplates handle the third, engineered per make and model to tie into structural mounting points behind the fascia.
The wider flat towing range covers supplemental braking systems, safety cables and the accessories that make a complete legal setup, along with baseplate wiring and dinghy towing harnesses that pass lighting signals to the towed vehicle without back-feeding its electrical system.
For conventional trailer towing, Blue Ox weight distributing hitches with integrated sway control transfer tongue load onto the tow vehicle's front axle and resist the yaw that crosswinds and passing trucks induce.

Yes, the BX1641 is designed for the Monte Carlo SS model years 2000–2003. If you are using a car-mounted tow bar with this baseplate, you will also need either a BX88133 or BX88135 tow bar.

Yes. The front bumper and headlights must be removed for baseplate installation. The lower plastic rock guard is also temporarily removed from the front. The installation process involves removing the bumper facia in steps 1–7 before the baseplate can be positioned.
Yes. The headlights must be removed by pulling out the two white clips from the back of each headlight assembly (step 2). They are reinstalled after the baseplate and bumper facia are trimmed and positioned (step 17).
Yes. The horn must be removed from the passenger side frame (step 9). After drilling, it is remounted to the lower bolt on the side plate using a 3/8" Whiz nut (step 12).
Yes. Drilling is required at multiple locations: the horn bracket hole must be drilled to 3/8" diameter (step 9), two 3/8" holes must be drilled for each side plate using the baseplate as a template (step 11), and two 1/2" holes must be drilled under the metal bumper using the brace holes as a template (step 14).
Yes. The center grill must be trimmed to allow clearance (step 16), and the bumper facia must be marked and trimmed to allow the attachment tabs to extend through (step 17). The attachment tabs are centered at 22 inches.
Required tools are: 8mm wrench, 9/16" wrench, 3/4" wrench, 1/4" drill bit, C-clamp vise grip, utility knife, plastic pop rivet gun, and Loctite. A drill capable of drilling 3/8" and 1/2" holes is also needed.
The kit includes: one baseplate weldment (61-5532), four 3/8" bolt plates with 14-inch wire (61-5941), two 1/2" bolt plates with wire (61-5509), two spacer plates (102-6037), 3/8" and 1/2" lock washers and hex nuts, one 3/8" hex flange Whiz lock nut, two 4-way connectors (101-5822), self-drilling screws, #10-32 hardware, two 36-inch Class III baseplate safety cables (226-0046), two 3/8" quicklinks (229-0359), and four 6.3mm plastic rivets (229-0536).
Follow this sequence: (1) Open the hood and remove plastic push pins from the top of the bumper facia and the hood latch cover. (2) Remove headlights by pulling out the two white clips from the back of each assembly. (3) Remove 11mm screws fastening the bumper facia to the fenders. (4) Remove 7mm screws from the bumper facia/fender well molding forward of the front tires and drill out the two lower rivets. (5) Slightly pull the fender well molding out and remove the 11mm bolts fastening the bumper facia to the fenders. (6) Remove 7mm screws from the bottom of the bumper facia. (7) Remove push pins holding the center grill. The facia can then be removed.
Place the baseplate up to the vehicle so that the front holes in the brace are centered to the bottom of the metal bumper and the side plates are on the outside of the frame (step 10). Clamp the baseplate to the bumper. The attachment tabs are centered at 22 inches.
The fluid reservoir bolts may need to be removed to insert the spacer plate for the passenger side (step 11). Check clearance when positioning the spacer plate on the passenger side.
Spacer plates (part 102-6037) are placed between the side plates and the frame to ensure proper spacing and alignment during installation (step 11). Two spacer plates are included in the kit.
The bolt plates with wire are inserted through the holes on the bottom of each frame (step 13) and then through the ends of the metal bumper (step 15). The bolts are then tightened (step 15).
Permanent baseplate safety cables are strongly recommended when towing a vehicle with a tow bar. The BX1641 kit includes two 36-inch Class III safety cables (226-0046) and two 3/8" quicklinks (229-0359). The cables must be connected from the baseplate to the frame rail or cross member of the vehicle's frame. However, these cables are to be used in conjunction with, and NOT a replacement for, legally required safety cables attaching the towed vehicle to the towing vehicle.
The permanent baseplate safety cables must be connected from the baseplate to the frame rail or cross member of the vehicle's frame. Do not mount the cables against wires, hoses or brake lines, as this could cause fluid leaks or electrical shorts.
Before each towing trip, inspect all towing equipment for cracked welds, missing or worn parts, and loose bolts. Ensure all bolts are tightened to the recommended specifications using Loctite Red.
The installer must watch for oil cooler and air conditioner lines, electrical wires and hoses, and missing parts or attaching points on the frame. If the baseplate is improperly installed against a wire or hose, it could cause fluid leaks or electrical shorts some time after installation.
