The company operates from Pender, Nebraska, where it grew out of Automatic Manufacturing Co., a business that started with cattle oilers and developed into agricultural equipment, tractor accessories and trailer towing hardware. Flat towing is the discipline Blue Ox is best known for. Towing a car with all four wheels on the ground behind a motorhome demands a system that stays rigid under braking, articulates properly over uneven ground, and connects to the towed vehicle at points strong enough to take the load. Blue Ox tow bars handle the first two, with self-aligning arms that latch under tension and release without a struggle when the load is off them. Vehicle-specific baseplates handle the third, engineered per make and model to tie into structural mounting points behind the fascia.
The wider flat towing range covers supplemental braking systems, safety cables and the accessories that make a complete legal setup, along with baseplate wiring and dinghy towing harnesses that pass lighting signals to the towed vehicle without back-feeding its electrical system.
For conventional trailer towing, Blue Ox weight distributing hitches with integrated sway control transfer tongue load onto the tow vehicle's front axle and resist the yaw that crosswinds and passing trucks induce.

Yes, the BX1993 is designed specifically for 2010-11 Mitsubishi Lancer ES/ES Sport models. However, confirm towability and pre-towing procedures with your vehicle's owner's manual or contact the manufacturer for specific towing requirements.
No. Due to the design of the removable tabs on the BX1993, the RangeFinder II and Ambassador tow bars cannot be used with this baseplate. Motorhome mount tow bars are recommended instead.
Most tow bar adapters cannot be used with the BX1993. The only exceptions are the BX8833 and BX88151 adapters. Additionally, tow bar adapters cannot be used with vehicles weighing over 5,000 lbs.

Yes. Trimming of the bumper and the air dam is required. Additionally, you will need to cut a notch in the existing hole on each side of the frame to allow the nut plate through (step 17), and cut a hole in the fascia opening as needed for the breakaway bracket (step 21).
The following must be removed and reinstalled: plastic cover (both sides), fascia, license plate bracket, washer reservoir (passenger side), horn (passenger side), temperature sensor, and various bolts and push pins. The manual notes that handling cosmetic parts may require protective covers, rags, and specialty tools to prevent damage.
The manual states to tighten all bolts according to the torque chart on the front page of these instructions or on page 3 of the Baseplate Towing General Instructions. The specific torque value for 3/8" Grade 5 bolts is 33 foot-pounds (shown in the torque chart on page 1).
The BX8869 Bulb and Socket Wiring Kit is available for this vehicle. A possible location for installation is shown in the manual.
Yes. The manual explicitly states: "BE SURE TO USE LOCTITE® RED ON ALL BOLTS BEFORE TIGHTENING." Loctite Red is listed in the required tools.
On the passenger side, remove the washer reservoir by removing two bolts from the front (step 10), one bolt from the back (step 11), and one bolt from the top (step 12). Disconnect all hoses and electrical connections and plug the hoses. After installing the baseplate, reinstall the washer reservoir into the back middle hole on the baseplate, ensuring all hoses and electrical connections are reconnected (step 19).
On the passenger side, remove the bolt from the horn using a 12MM socket (step 13). Move the horn above the bumper and bolt it to the existing hole.
Remove the temperature sensor from below the bumper, flip it over, and put it on the other side so that it is out of the way (step 15).
Attach the permanent baseplate safety cables to the provided convenience link on the baseplate. The recommended installation is to secure the cables to the frame of the vehicle. Use the cable ties to ensure the safety cables do not rub against any hoses or moving parts. Do this on both sides of the vehicle. If additional options interfere with suggested mounting, secure the cables to a solid piece of the frame as described in the instructions included with the permanent baseplate safety cables (step 20).
Attach the breakaway bracket to the bottom of the bumper with a 10-16 x 1" self drilling screw. Fasten the breakaway to the bracket with a 1/4-20 x 3/4" hex bolt and a 1/4-20 hex nut. Cut a hole in the fascia opening as needed to allow the bracket to go through (step 21).
If the baseplate is in an accident, it must be replaced. Do not use it again. An accident can cause unseen damage and using it again could result in more damage or serious injury. Do not use the baseplate if it is damaged or missing parts.
No. Do not use the towed vehicle for storing luggage, equipment, etc. This may cause you to exceed the towing capacity of the tow bar, baseplate, and its accessories.
Be sure that ALL electrical connections are plugged in properly and functioning BEFORE installing the fascia.

When replacing a bolt, use a replacement bolt of the same grade (in most cases Grade 5). Use only genuine factory replacement parts; do not substitute homemade or non-typical parts. Failing to follow these instructions or altering the installation instructions will void the manufacturer's warranty.
