Blue Ox is known internationally for recreational and commercial towing products, manufacturing in Pender, Nebraska since 1925. The line covers tow bars and vehicle-specific baseplates for flat towing behind a motorhome, sway control and weight distributing hitches, supplemental braking accessories and towing wiring, backed by patented designs and long-standing customer service.
Blue Ox has manufactured since 1925 and is recognised internationally for towing products and customer service. The company operates from Pender, Nebraska, where it grew out of Automatic Manufacturing Co., a business that started with cattle oilers and developed into agricultural equipment, tractor accessories and trailer towing hardware. That agricultural engineering heritage still shows in how the towing products are built, and the company holds patents across weight distribution, fifth wheel and tow bar designs.
Flat towing is the discipline Blue Ox is best known for. Towing a car with all four wheels on the ground behind a motorhome demands a system that stays rigid under braking, articulates properly over uneven ground, and connects to the towed vehicle at points strong enough to take the load. Blue Ox tow bars handle the first two, with self-aligning arms that latch under tension and release without a struggle when the load is off them. Vehicle-specific baseplates handle the third, engineered per make and model to tie into structural mounting points behind the fascia.
The wider flat towing range covers supplemental braking systems, safety cables and the accessories that make a complete legal setup, along with baseplate wiring and dinghy towing harnesses that pass lighting signals to the towed vehicle without back-feeding its electrical system.
For conventional trailer towing, Blue Ox weight distributing hitches with integrated sway control transfer tongue load onto the tow vehicle's front axle and resist the yaw that crosswinds and passing trucks induce.
The company describes its foundation as customer service, designing around what owners actually ask for, and it runs an RV park adjacent to the factory where customers can stay. Sister operations at the same Nebraska site include Automatic grain roller mills and MAD-RAMPS pivoting ramp systems.

Yes. The fascia cover and front fascia must be removed to access the mounting points. The windshield washer fluid reservoir must also be removed. All removed items will be reinstalled after baseplate installation unless otherwise noted in the instructions.
Yes. Both headlights must be removed to access the mounting area. Remove the four bolts securing each headlight (two on top, one below, one on the side) using a 10MM socket, disconnect the wiring, and set the headlights aside. They will be reinstalled after baseplate installation.
Yes. Drilling is required. You will drill one 3/8" hole on the passenger side, four 3/8" holes on the driver side for the bracket mounting, and one 1" hole on each side for center access. A 3/8" drill bit and 1" hole saw are required tools.
Yes. A reciprocating saw is required to trim plastic shrouding for baseplate clearance and to cut the frame on both driver and passenger sides. On the passenger side, cut along the marked black area across and down, then make two slots as indicated. On the driver side, perform the same cuts. After cutting, use a hammer to bend pieces forward and flatten them to prevent interference with the baseplate.
Yes. When reattaching the reservoir, you must slot out the top hole using a drill bit so the reservoir does not hit the baseplate. Use a 6MM x 30 bolt with a flat washer when reattaching the bottom of the reservoir instead of the original fastener.
Yes. The horn bracket must be bent to allow for baseplate clearance. After bending, reattach the horn as indicated in the installation instructions.
For Grade 5 bolts: 1/4" = 10 ft-lbs, 5/16" = 19 ft-lbs, 3/8" = 33 ft-lbs, 7/16" = 54 ft-lbs, 1/2" = 78 ft-lbs, 5/8" = 154 ft-lbs, 3/4" = 257 ft-lbs. Apply Loctite Red to all bolt threads before tightening.

For Grade 10.9 metric bolts: 6MM = 8 ft-lbs, 8MM = 22 ft-lbs, 10MM = 40 ft-lbs, 12MM = 70 ft-lbs, 14MM = 117 ft-lbs, 16MM = 230 ft-lbs, 18MM = 318 ft-lbs. Apply Loctite Red to all bolt threads before tightening.
If the baseplate is damaged or has been in an accident, it must be replaced. Do not use it again. An accident can cause unseen damage, and using a damaged baseplate could result in more damage or serious injury. Do not use the baseplate if it is damaged or missing parts.
The baseplate is computer tested to your vehicle's GVWR. Exceeding this weight will void the manufacturer's warranty. Refer to your vehicle owner's manual for manufacturer's towing specifications.
Yes. Permanent baseplate safety cables are strongly recommended and are included with the kit. The cables must be connected from the baseplate to the frame rail or cross member of the vehicle's frame. The cables must have adequate weight rating and must not be mounted against wires, hoses, or brake lines. These cables are to be used in conjunction with, and not as a replacement for, legally required safety cables attaching the towed vehicle to the towing vehicle.
Attach the permanent baseplate safety cables to the provided convenience link on the baseplate. The cables should be routed around the crossmember or frame of the towed vehicle. The manual shows two recommended options for cable routing. Ensure the safety cables do not rub against any hoses or moving parts. If additional options interfere with suggested mounting, secure the cables to a solid piece of the frame as described in the General Information sheet.
Be aware of objects behind the cutting surface when using a reciprocating saw. Additionally, use a good quality paint to spray cut edges of frame to prevent rusting.
Be aware of the dangers of torque and drill bit length when using power drills.
Be sure that all electrical connections are plugged in and accessories are functioning properly before reinstalling the fascia. Additionally, when reattaching the fascia, mark and trim the fascia around the convenience links and attachment tabs to ensure proper fit.
It is the owner's responsibility to inspect all towing equipment for cracked welds, missing or worn parts, and loose bolts before each towing trip. Be sure to use Loctite Red on all bolts and tighten to the recommended specifications. The attachment tabs should be removed when not in use. Tighten 3/8" Grade 5 bolts to 33 foot-pounds. Apply Loctite Red to all bolt threads before tightening.
Yes. Two class III safety cables are included and must be connected from the baseplate to the vehicle's frame rail or cross member. They must not be mounted against wires, hoses, or brake lines.
The baseplate is computer tested to your vehicle's GVWR. Exceeding this weight voids the warranty. Refer to your vehicle owner's manual for manufacturer's towing specifications.
Inspect all towing equipment for cracked welds, missing or worn parts, and loose bolts before each towing trip. Tighten all bolts to specification using Loctite Red. Remove attachment tabs when not in use. Register your product at www.blueox.com for safety bulletins and recalls.
Mark and trim the fascia around the convenience links and attachment tabs before reinstalling. The manual indicates that dimensional variations between otherwise identical vehicles can be considerable, and it may be necessary to tailor the baseplate slightly to compensate for vehicle manufacturer's tolerances.
Slot out the top hole of the reservoir using a drill bit so that the reservoir does not hit the baseplate. Additionally, use a 6MM x 30 bolt with a flat washer when reattaching the bottom of the reservoir instead of the original fastener.
Bend the horn bracket to allow for baseplate clearance and reattach the horn as indicated in the installation instructions.
