Blue Ox is known internationally for recreational and commercial towing products, manufacturing in Pender, Nebraska since 1925. The line covers tow bars and vehicle-specific baseplates for flat towing behind a motorhome, sway control and weight distributing hitches, supplemental braking accessories and towing wiring, backed by patented designs and long-standing customer service.
Blue Ox has manufactured since 1925 and is recognised internationally for towing products and customer service. The company operates from Pender, Nebraska, where it grew out of Automatic Manufacturing Co., a business that started with cattle oilers and developed into agricultural equipment, tractor accessories and trailer towing hardware. That agricultural engineering heritage still shows in how the towing products are built, and the company holds patents across weight distribution, fifth wheel and tow bar designs.
Flat towing is the discipline Blue Ox is best known for. Towing a car with all four wheels on the ground behind a motorhome demands a system that stays rigid under braking, articulates properly over uneven ground, and connects to the towed vehicle at points strong enough to take the load. Blue Ox tow bars handle the first two, with self-aligning arms that latch under tension and release without a struggle when the load is off them. Vehicle-specific baseplates handle the third, engineered per make and model to tie into structural mounting points behind the fascia.
The wider flat towing range covers supplemental braking systems, safety cables and the accessories that make a complete legal setup, along with baseplate wiring and dinghy towing harnesses that pass lighting signals to the towed vehicle without back-feeding its electrical system.
For conventional trailer towing, Blue Ox weight distributing hitches with integrated sway control transfer tongue load onto the tow vehicle's front axle and resist the yaw that crosswinds and passing trucks induce.
The company describes its foundation as customer service, designing around what owners actually ask for, and it runs an RV park adjacent to the factory where customers can stay. Sister operations at the same Nebraska site include Automatic grain roller mills and MAD-RAMPS pivoting ramp systems.

Yes, the BX1920 baseplate is designed for 1992-94 Dodge Colt-Vista, Plymouth Colt-Vista, Eagle Summit Wagon, and Mitsubishi Expo. The baseplate attaches to three points under the front of the vehicle using two existing bolts and four bolts included with the baseplate.
Yes, the BX1920 fits both engine sizes, but the installation differs. If your car has a 2.4L engine, you will use the center and inner slots on the center mount. If your car has a 1.8L engine, you will use the center and outer slots. The correct slot configuration must be used during installation.
You will need: 9/16 socket, 17mm socket, 9/16 combination wrench, 3/4 socket, and 3/4 combination wrench. You will also need a jack to lift the vehicle 3-4 inches and an assistant to help position the baseplate.
Yes. There are two bolts that attach the engine support beam to the frame just behind the bumper. You must remove these bolts and inspect them for reuse. The engine support beam is located just to the passenger side of the center of the car. After removal, these bolts will be reused with the center mount plate during installation.
Lift the vehicle approximately 3-4 inches using a jack placed under the engine support beam, which is located just to the passenger side of the center of the car. This lift is necessary to access the engine support bolts and position the baseplate.
1. Lift the vehicle 3-4 inches and remove the two engine support bolts. 2. Place two 1/2 x 1 1/2 bolts and flat washers through the slots in the center mount (using center and inner slots for 2.4L engines, or center and outer slots for 1.8L engines). 3. Position the baseplate under the car with an assistant, sliding the outer plates along the outside of the tie-down brackets. 4. Insert spacer plates between the outer plates and tie-down brackets when the outer plates are about 2 inches above the bottom of the tie-down. 5. Install the 1/2 x 1 1/2 bolts through the outer plate, spacer, and larger slot on each side. 6. Install the 3/8 x 1 3/4 bolts through the smaller slots. 7. Secure all bolts with Locktite, washers, lock washers, and nuts. 8. Place the center mount plate over the engine support bolts and the two 1/2 x 1 1/2 bolts, apply Locktite, and start the bolts. 9. Tighten all bolts securely. 10. Install the tow bar and safety cables according to their instructions.
Spacer plates (part number 102-3311) are tapered plates that fit between the outer plates of the baseplate and the tie-down brackets on each side of the frame. When the tops of the outer plates are about 2 inches above the bottom of the tie-down, slip a spacer plate between them. The smaller hole on the spacer should face toward the back of the car. Two spacer plates are included with the baseplate.
Oblong washers fill the space in the slots of the tie-down brackets and hold the bolts in the center of the slots. When properly positioned, the washers are flush with the inside of the tie-down bracket. Large oblong washers (part number 101-4880) are used with the 1/2 x 1 1/2 bolts in the larger slots, and small oblong washers (part number 101-4879) are used with the 3/8 x 1 3/4 bolts in the smaller slots.
Possibly. Dimensional variations between otherwise identical cars can be considerable. While the location and size of the holes in the baseplate were designed to allow for easy installation, it may be necessary to file a hole slightly to allow a bolt to clear. Additionally, on some vehicles the flat washer may have to be trimmed to fit into the bottom of the tie-down.
The baseplate includes: four 1/2-13 x 1 1/2 hex bolts, Grade 5 (part number 201-0051); two 3/8-16 x 1 3/4 hex bolts, Grade 5 (part number 201-0404); two 3/8-16 hex nuts (part number 202-0003); four 1/2-13 hex nuts (part number 202-0005); four 1/2 flat washers (part number 203-0005); two 3/8 lock washers (part number 203-0010); and four 1/2 lock washers (part number 203-0012).
Two different bolt sizes are used. The larger slots on the tie-down brackets use 1/2 x 1 1/2 bolts (part number 201-0051), and the smaller slots use 3/8 x 1 3/4 bolts (part number 201-0404). Both are Grade 5 hex bolts.
The manual does not provide information about electrical connections for the BX1920 baseplate itself. However, the manual references a General Instruction Sheet that should be included with the baseplate, and instructs that the tow bar and safety cables be installed according to their own instructions. Refer to those documents for any electrical requirements.
Do not substitute other devices if the tow bar pin and clip are lost. You must obtain replacement pins and clips from the manufacturer or supplier.
After installation, ensure all bolts are tightened securely. The manual also instructs that the tow bar and safety cables be installed according to their own instructions. The dealer or installer should ensure the user receives the instruction sheet. The manual does not specify post-installation inspection intervals or retorque procedures.
The BX1920 fits 1992-94 Dodge Colt-Vista, Plymouth Colt-Vista, Eagle Summit Wagon, and Mitsubishi Expo. Engine size (1.8L or 2.4L) affects slot configuration but does not affect fitment.
You need: 9/16 socket, 17mm socket, 9/16 combination wrench, 3/4 socket, 3/4 combination wrench, a jack, and an assistant. Locktite is also required.
Yes, you must remove two bolts from the engine support beam located just to the passenger side of the center of the car. These bolts are reused during installation with the center mount plate.
No drilling is required. However, you may need to file holes slightly to allow bolts to clear due to dimensional variations between vehicles, and flat washers may need trimming to fit into tie-down slots on some vehicles.
The baseplate includes four 1/2-13 x 1 1/2 bolts, two 3/8-16 x 1 3/4 bolts, nuts, flat washers, lock washers, and two spacer plates. All bolts are Grade 5.
Do not substitute other devices if the tow bar pin and clip are lost. Ensure the user receives the instruction sheet. Locktite must be applied to all bolts as specified in the installation steps.
