A CURT front trailer hitch allows you to use the front end of your vehicle for a variety of towing applications. They can be used for mounting a winch, a snow plow, a number of towing accessories and can even be used for some trailering applications. When space is limited, a front trailer hitch is commonly used to hold a cargo carrier, freeing up space inside the vehicle for extra cargo and making the rear mount receiver available to pull a trailer. At the boat ramp, your boat trailer can be hitched up to the front receiver hitch, giving you better control over the trailer as you launch. Some of the other accessories that can be used with a front tow hitch are the CURT winch mount, step pad, license plate holder, spare tire mount, skid shield and tow hooks. All CURT front trailer hitches provide a useful receiver tube to accept a 2" x 2" shank, and they are commonly used on trucks, vans and SUVs. This front trailer hitch is rated for 5,000 lbs. GTW and 500 lbs. TW. It also has a straight-line pull rating of 9,000 lbs. It is designed to be a custom trailer hitch for certain years of the Ford Expedition and F150 (to verify your vehicle compatibility, see application info). It comes with all necessary hardware for a complete installation and is backed by a limited lifetime warranty.

CURT part 31083 is designed for the Ford F-150. However, the manual does not specify which model years, cab styles (Regular Cab, SuperCab, SuperCrew), or bed lengths are compatible. Contact CURT Technical Support at 1-877-287-8634 or visit www.curtmfg.com to confirm fitment for your specific F-150 before purchasing.
When used as a straight-line pull (winching), the maximum line pull is 9,000 lbs. When used as a weight-carrying hitch, the manual shows blank values for trailer weight and tongue weight capacity. You must not exceed your vehicle manufacturer's recommended towing capacity. Contact CURT at 1-877-287-8634 or check www.curtmfg.com for the complete weight-carrying specifications.
The hitch weight is 65 lbs.
The kit includes: 4× 1/2-13 UNC carriage bolts, 1-3/4" grade 8 (part 10-10272); 4× 1/2-13 UNC serrated flange nuts, grade 8 (part 20-00062); 4× 0.250 × 1.25 × 3.00" square-hole spacers (part CM-SP19); 2× 0.188 × 1.50 × 2.00" round-hole spacers (part CM-SP32); and 4× 1/2" fishwire (part 1_2 FISHWIRE).
Required tools are: flat-head screwdriver, 3/4" socket, tape measure, ratchet, torque wrench, aviation shears, tape, and marker.
No. The manual explicitly states "NO DRILLING" is required. The hitch uses existing frame attachment points and fishwiring to route hardware through access holes.
Yes. You must remove the lower air dam and trim the lower plastic bumper fascia as required. The manual provides a trim diagram as a reference; the exact trim dimensions may vary depending on your bumper style. The diagram shows trim lines at approximately 2 5/8 inches and 3 inches from the bottom edge.
All 1/2" fasteners must be torqued to 110 lb-ft.
Professional installation: 65 minutes. DIY/Novice installation: 43 minutes.
Fishwire is used to route the carriage bolts and spacers through the frame access holes without removing the bumper. In step 3, feed the ends of the fishwire through the mounting holes on the hitch, then pull the carriage bolts out through the rear and forward-most attachment points on the frame. Once aligned, pull the mounting hardware back through the hitch mounting holes and secure with flange nuts.
Two types of spacers are used: CM-SP32 (0.188 × 1.50 × 2.00" round-hole spacers) are taped on the outside of the frame over the rear-most attachment points on both driver and passenger sides. CM-SP19 (0.250 × 1.25 × 3.00" square-hole spacers) are fishwired through with the carriage bolts at the forward and rear attachment points.
For maximum line pull rating, the winch cable must not exceed 15 degrees up or down from horizontal, and must not exceed 45 degrees left or right from straight ahead. Exceeding these angles may overload the winch, winch mount, and/or front-mounted receiver.
No. You must use OEM tow hooks, recovery eyes, or a clevis mount for attachment of a tow strap or winch cable. Never use the ball or ball mount as an anchor point—severe personal injury or death could result. When using a snatch block, attach the return cable to the tow hook or recovery eye, not to the winch mount.
Do not exceed your vehicle's front axle Gross Weight Rating (GAWR). Consult your owner's manual or the specification plate on your driver's door frame. Measure gross front axle weight by placing the front wheels of your loaded vehicle on a scale. Exceeding GAWR may overload the front axle and/or suspension, which could result in accident, property damage, and personal injury.
Periodically check the receiver hitch to ensure that all fasteners are tight and that all structural components are sound. The manual does not specify an exact interval; regular inspection before towing is recommended.
