A CURT front trailer hitch allows you to use the front end of your vehicle for a variety of towing applications. They can be used for mounting a winch, a snow plow, a number of towing accessories and can even be used for some trailering applications. When space is limited, a front trailer hitch is commonly used to hold a cargo carrier, freeing up space inside the vehicle for extra cargo and making the rear mount receiver available to pull a trailer. At the boat ramp, your boat trailer can be hitched up to the front receiver hitch, giving you better control over the trailer as you launch. Some of the other accessories that can be used with a front tow hitch are the CURT winch mount, step pad, license plate holder, spare tire mount, skid shield and tow hooks. All CURT front trailer hitches provide a useful receiver tube to accept a 2" x 2" shank, and they are commonly used on trucks, vans and SUVs. This front trailer hitch is rated for 3,500 lbs. GTW and 350 lbs. TW. It also has a straight-line pull rating of 9,000 lbs. It is designed to be a custom trailer hitch for certain years of the Jeep Wrangler TJ (to verify your vehicle compatibility, see application info). It comes with all necessary hardware for a complete installation and is backed by a limited lifetime warranty.

CURT offers a variety of high-quality trailer hitches and accessories for select vehicle models. Find the perfect fit for your towing needs at TowUniverse.

The CURT 31028 has a gross load capacity of 9,000 lbs max when used as a straight line pull. For weight-carrying use, the manual does not specify the capacity values. Regardless of the hitch rating, you must never exceed your vehicle manufacturer's recommended towing capacity.
The manual lists a trailer weight of 3,500 lbs and tongue weight of 350 lbs on page 1. However, page 5 shows blank spaces where these values should be confirmed for weight-carrying mode. Contact CURT technical support at 877-287-8634 to confirm the current specifications.
The hitch weight is 60 lbs.
You will need: a power drill, 9/16" drill bit, die grinder, ratchet, 3/4" socket, marker, torque wrench, and safety glasses. The manual notes that using proper tools will greatly improve the quality of the install and reduce the time required.
The kit includes: 6× 1/2-13 UNC carriage bolts, 1-1/2" long, grade 8, zinc-plated (part 10-10287); 6× 1/2-13 UNC serrated flange nuts, grade 8, zinc-plated (part 20-00062); 6× 0.250 × 1.00 × 3.00" square hole spacers (part CM-SP6); and 6× 1/2" fishwires (part 1_2 FISHWIRE).
Two people may be required to ease installation. The manual recommends reading all instructions thoroughly before beginning and notes that if you are hesitant to undertake this task on your own, you should contact an authorized CURT installer for additional assistance.
Professional installers typically complete the installation in 30 minutes. For novice DIY installers, the manual lists 60 minutes. However, the manual notes that the listed time is for professional installers, and if you are hesitant to undertake this task on your own, you should contact an authorized CURT installer.
Yes, drilling is required. You must drill 2 holes using a 9/16" drill bit on both the driver side and passenger side frame rails (4 holes total). You must also enlarge the existing mounting holes on the bottom of each frame rail so that 1/2" hardware can pass through. A die grinder is required for hole enlargement.
A 9/16" drill bit is required to drill the 2 holes on each side of the frame rails.
1. Raise the hitch into position and mark 2 drill hole locations. Lift the driver side first so the bolt heads on the side of the frame go through the large holes in the hitch side plate, then raise the hitch into position. 2. Lower the hitch and drill 2 holes using a 9/16" drill bit. 3. Enlarge the mounting hole on the bottom of each frame rail so that 1/2" hardware can pass through. 4. Fishwire 2 carriage bolts and 2 CM-SP6 spacers into position in the side of each frame rail. Reverse fishwire 1 carriage bolt and 1 CM-SP6 spacer into position in the bottom of each frame rail. Leave fishwires attached to all hardware to prevent hardware becoming lost in the frame. 5. Thread fishwires through hitch mounting holes and raise the hitch into position. Secure to frame using 1/2" flange nuts. 6. Torque all 1/2" hardware to 110 ft-lbs.
Fishwires are flexible wires included in the kit (6 total, part 1_2 FISHWIRE) used to guide carriage bolts and spacers into position within the frame rails. You fishwire 2 carriage bolts and 2 CM-SP6 spacers into the side of each frame rail, and reverse fishwire 1 carriage bolt and 1 CM-SP6 spacer into the bottom of each frame rail. The manual instructs you to leave fishwires attached to all hardware to prevent hardware becoming lost in the frame. The fishwires are then threaded through the hitch mounting holes to position the hitch.
All 1/2" hardware (carriage bolts and flange nuts) must be torqued to 110 ft-lbs.
Safety glasses should be worn at all times while installing this product. Before you begin installation, read all instructions thoroughly. If you are hesitant to undertake this task on your own, contact an authorized CURT installer for additional assistance.
Never exceed your vehicle manufacturer's recommended towing capacity. The CURT 31028 has a gross load capacity of 9,000 lbs max when used as a straight line pull, but your vehicle's towing capacity may be lower. Consult your vehicle's owner's manual or specification plate to determine the maximum safe towing capacity for your specific Jeep Wrangler.
The CURT 31028 can be used for vehicle recovery and winching, but you must follow these rules: Use OEM tow hooks, recovery eyes, or a clevis mount for attachment of a tow strap or winch cable. Never use a ball or ball mount as an anchor point—severe personal injury or death could result. Observe the winch manufacturer's recommendations, cautions and warnings. When using a snatch block, attach the return cable to the tow hook or recovery eye, not to the winch mount, as this may overload the winch mount and/or front mounted receiver. For maximum line pull rating, the winch cable must not exceed 15 degrees angle up or down from horizontal, or 45 degrees angle left or right from straight ahead. Exceeding these angles may overload the winch, winch mount, and/or front mounted receiver.
Do not exceed the front axle Gross Weight Rating (GAWR)—consult your owner's manual or the specification plate on the driver's door frame, and measure gross front axle weight by placing the front wheels of the loaded vehicle on a scale. Exceeding GAWR may overload the front axle and/or suspension, resulting in accident, property damage and personal injury. Reposition the front-mounted license plate if obstructed. Do not obstruct vehicle lights. Allow free air flow into the grille opening. Be aware that rear wheel traction may be reduced, which could affect handling—reduce speed and drive with caution. Accessories extend the front of the vehicle and may reduce approach angle—use caution when parking and maneuvering. Do not obstruct driver view.
After installation, ensure all 1/2" hardware has been torqued to 110 ft-lbs. Periodically check the receiver hitch to ensure that all fasteners are tight and that all structural components are sound. This ongoing maintenance is critical for safe operation.
Periodically check the receiver hitch to ensure that all fasteners are tight and that all structural components are sound. The manual does not specify an exact interval, but regular inspection before towing is recommended.

Professional installers typically complete it in 30 minutes; novice DIY installers should allow 60 minutes. If hesitant, contact an authorized CURT installer.
The manual instructs to leave fishwires attached to all hardware to prevent hardware becoming lost in the frame. If hardware is lost despite this precaution, you will need to disassemble the installation to retrieve it from inside the frame rail. Contact CURT technical support at 877-287-8634 for assistance.
Loose fasteners indicate the hitch is not properly secured to the frame and may not be safe for towing. Stop using the hitch immediately. Retorque all 1/2" hardware to 110 ft-lbs using a torque wrench. If fasteners continue to loosen, the hitch may not be properly installed or the frame may be damaged. Contact an authorized CURT installer or call technical support at 877-287-8634.
