For any and all types of trailers with electric trailer brakes, a CURT breakaway kit provides you with the equipment you need to be prepared. We offers three different complete breakaway systems to accommodate various trailer sizes and meet your specific towing needs. All of our breakaway kits are tested for your safety and meet DOT requirements for holding and breakaway situations. The CURT Soft-Trac 1 breakaway system comes with a 12-volt, 5-amp battery and a nylon breakaway switch for reliable activation. The battery is designed to be rechargeable for long-term use, and the breakaway switch comes with a 48" lanyard to fit most vehicle-trailer combinations. This particular kit does not include a battery charger. To keep the battery well-protected from the elements and tampering, this Soft-Trac 1 breakaway kit also comes with a lockable top-load battery case. The case is made from durable plastic to be rust-free and features a screw-tight lid with rubber gaskets to maintain good wiring connections. Nobody hitches up a trailer expecting a breakaway, but that doesn't mean you should tow unprepared. Be ready for anything with a CURT breakaway kit.

CURT offers a variety of high-quality trailer hitches and accessories for select vehicle models. Find the perfect fit for your towing needs at TowUniverse.

The CURT 52041 is a breakaway kit designed to activate a trailer's electric brakes if the trailer disconnects while towing, bringing the trailer to a safe stop. It includes a breakaway switch, 12V 5Ah gel cell battery, battery case, battery charger, and mounting hardware. Breakaway kits are required when towing trailers of 3,000 lbs. GTW or greater.
Your trailer must be equipped with electrical brakes to use the CURT 52041 breakaway kit. The kit is required for trailers of 3,000 lbs. GTW or greater. If your trailer does not have electric brakes, this kit will not function.
The kit includes: 1 breakaway switch, 1 battery case, 1 battery charger, 1 12V 5Ah gel cell battery, 4 self-tapping screws with hex head washer (1/4"-14 x 3"), 4 flat washers (5/16"), 4 Nylock nuts (5/16"), and 2 U-bolts (5/16").
The manual does not specify required tools beyond those needed to drill a 9/32" hole and to splice wires. A drill, wire strippers, and wire connectors or splice tools would be necessary. The manual notes that proper tools will improve installation quality and reduce installation time.
Position the breakaway switch on the tongue of the trailer so that the cable can reach the tow vehicle's trailer hitch safety chain eyelets. This positioning is critical for proper engagement of the switch. The switch must be mounted with a 9/32" hole drilled in the trailer frame, and it should be able to pivot freely—do not over-tighten the bolt.
Find a suitable location on the trailer frame to mount the battery case. Mount it in a location where it does not interfere with the switch's lanyard.
Yes, drilling is required. You must drill a 9/32" hole in the trailer frame to mount the breakaway switch. Use caution when drilling to ensure there are no wires or other objects behind the drilling surface.
Drill a 9/32" hole in the trailer frame to mount the breakaway switch.
The kit requires three wiring connections: (1) Connect one black wire to the breakaway battery's positive (+) terminal. (2) Splice the other black wire to the blue wire leading to the trailer brakes (the blue wire should show 12V positive when vehicle brakes are applied). (3) Splice the yellow wire on the breakaway box to the trailer's 12V auxiliary power lead. (4) Splice the white wire of the breakaway box to the white ground wire coming from the trailer side connector.
The blue wire leads to the trailer brakes. One of the black wires from the breakaway switch is spliced to this blue wire. The blue wire should show 12V positive when the vehicle brakes are applied.
The yellow wire on the breakaway box is spliced to the trailer's 12V auxiliary power lead.
The white wire of the breakaway box is spliced to the white ground wire coming from the trailer side connector.
Prior to each use: (1) Check the system's battery for operating voltage. (2) Check that the breakaway switch cables are not damaged from dragging on the ground and that they can move freely. (3) Check the breakaway system periodically to ensure proper and secure connections. (4) Test the breakaway by pulling firmly on the cable of the breakaway switch—the battery will activate the brakes. (5) Ensure the battery is charged prior to each use. Do not use this kit as a parking brake.
No, do not use this kit as a parking brake. It is designed only to activate the trailer's electric brakes in the event of a trailer disconnect during towing.
Before testing the breakaway system, disconnect the trailer connector from the tow vehicle. This is critical to avoid severe damage to the tow vehicle's electric brake controller.
Do not attach the breakaway switch cable to mounting hooks, trailer safety chains, or the trailer ball. Improper attachment can prevent the switch from functioning correctly.
Never exceed the vehicle manufacturer's recommended towing capacity. The CURT 52041 is a safety device and does not increase your vehicle's towing capacity.
The kit includes a battery charger. If the system measures voltage less than 14V, the charging circuit will provide maximum charging current to the 12V 5Ah gel cell battery until it is fully charged to 14V. During operation, the system provides a trickle charge to maintain battery voltage. Do not hook the 12V battery directly to the tow vehicle's charge circuit, as direct connection can damage the battery.
If neither the green nor red LED activates when switch S1 is activated, the battery voltage is under 6V, indicating a dead battery. Relay K1 will not activate and the tester circuit will have no power. Charge the battery fully before using the system.
Check the breakaway system periodically to ensure proper and secure connections. Prior to each use, check the battery for operating voltage, inspect the breakaway switch cables for damage, and verify they can move freely. Test the breakaway by pulling firmly on the cable to confirm the battery activates the brakes.
The CURT 52041 requires your trailer to be equipped with electrical brakes. It is required for trailers of 3,000 lbs. GTW or greater. If your trailer does not have electric brakes, this kit will not function.
You must splice: one black wire to the battery positive terminal, the other black wire to the blue trailer brake wire, the yellow wire to the 12V auxiliary power lead, and the white wire to the trailer ground wire.
Disconnect the trailer connector from the tow vehicle before testing to avoid damage to the tow vehicle's electric brake controller.
Check the battery voltage, inspect cables for damage, verify cables move freely, test the breakaway by pulling the cable firmly, and ensure the battery is fully charged.
Attach the cable to the tow vehicle's trailer hitch safety chain eyelets. Do not attach it to mounting hooks, trailer safety chains, or the trailer ball.
If neither LED activates, the battery voltage is under 6V, indicating a dead battery. Relay K1 will not activate and the tester circuit will have no power. Charge the battery fully using the included charger until it reaches 14V, then test again.
Check the following: (1) Verify the breakaway switch cable is attached to the tow vehicle's trailer hitch safety chain eyelets and can move freely. (2) Ensure the switch is positioned on the trailer tongue so the cable can reach the eyelets. (3) Confirm the switch is not over-tightened and can pivot. (4) Check that the cable is not damaged from dragging on the ground. (5) Test the breakaway by pulling firmly on the cable—if the battery does not activate the brakes, the battery may be dead or connections may be loose.
Reposition the breakaway switch on the trailer tongue so that the cable reaches the tow vehicle's trailer hitch safety chain eyelets without dragging. The cable should move freely and not be damaged. If the cable is already damaged, it must be replaced or repaired before towing.
