We offers three different complete breakaway systems to accommodate various trailer sizes and meet your specific towing needs. All of our breakaway kits are tested for your safety and meet DOT requirements for holding and breakaway situations. The CURT Soft-Trac 1 breakaway system comes with a 12-volt, 5-amp battery and a nylon breakaway switch for reliable activation. The battery is designed to be rechargeable for long-term use, and the breakaway switch comes with a 48" lanyard to fit most vehicle-trailer combinations. This particular kit also includes a 12-volt battery charger. To keep the battery well-protected from the elements and tampering, this Soft-Trac 1 breakaway kit also comes with a lockable top-load battery case. The case is made from durable plastic to be rust-free and features a screw-tight lid with rubber gaskets to maintain good wiring connections. The CURT 52040 is a breakaway kit designed to activate a trailer's electric brakes if the trailer disconnects while towing, bringing the trailer to a safe stop. It is required when towing trailers of 3,000 lbs. GTW or greater. The kit includes a breakaway switch, 12V 5Ah gel cell battery, battery charger, and mounting hardware.
Your trailer must be equipped with electrical brakes to use the CURT 52040 kit. The kit is required when towing trailers of 3,000 lbs. GTW or greater. The breakaway switch mounts on the trailer tongue and connects to the trailer's electric brake system via the blue wire.
The kit includes: 4 self-tapping screws with hex head washer (1/4"-14 x 3"), 4 flat washers (5/16"), 4 nylock nuts (5/16"), and 2 U-bolts (5/16"). These fasteners are used to mount the breakaway switch and battery case to the trailer frame.
Yes. You must disconnect the trailer connector from the tow vehicle prior to testing the breakaway system. This prevents severe damage to the tow vehicle's electric brake controller during testing.
Position the breakaway switch on the tongue of the trailer so that the cable can reach the tow vehicle's trailer hitch safety chain eyelets. This positioning is critical for proper engagement of the switch. Choose a suitable mounting location and drill a 9/32" hole in the trailer frame. Do not over-tighten the bolt so the breakaway switch can pivot.

Do not attach the breakaway switch cable to mounting hooks, trailer safety chains, or the trailer ball. The cable should be positioned to reach the tow vehicle's trailer hitch safety chain eyelets for proper engagement.
Never exceed the vehicle manufacturer's recommended towing capacity. The CURT 52040 is required for trailers of 3,000 lbs. GTW or greater, but you must always follow your vehicle manufacturer's specifications.
Prior to each use, check the system's battery for operating voltage. Check that the breakaway switch cables are not damaged from dragging on the ground and that they can move freely. Ensure the battery is charged prior to each use. Periodically check the breakaway system to ensure proper and secure connections.
Test the breakaway by pulling firmly on the cable of the breakaway switch. The battery will activate the brakes. However, you must disconnect the trailer connector from the tow vehicle prior to testing to avoid severe damage to the tow vehicle's electric brake controller.
When battery voltage is under 6V, relay K1 will not activate when switch S1 is activated. The whole tester circuit will have no power and will not activate either the green or red LED. This indicates a dead battery that needs to be charged.
If the system measures voltage less than 14V, the charging circuit provides maximum charging current to the 12V 5Ah gel cell battery until it is fully charged to 14V. During operation, the system provides a trickle charge to maintain battery voltage. Do not hook the 12V battery directly to the tow vehicle's charge circuit, as direct connection can damage the battery.
