For any and all types of trailers with electric trailer brakes, a CURT breakaway kit provides you with the equipment you need to be prepared. We offers three different complete breakaway systems to accommodate various trailer sizes and meet your specific towing needs. All of our breakaway kits are tested for your safety and meet DOT requirements for holding and breakaway situations. The CURT Soft-Trac 2 breakaway system comes with a 12-volt, 5-amp battery and a nylon breakaway switch for reliable activation. The battery is designed to be rechargeable for long-term use, and the breakaway switch comes with a 48" lanyard to fit most vehicle-trailer combinations. This particular kit does not include a battery charger. To keep the battery well-protected from the elements and to allow for convenient mounting on your trailer, this Soft-Trac 2 breakaway kit also comes with a top-load battery case. The case is made from durable plastic to be rust-free and features a metal mounting bracket with a 3-1/8" hole, to mount on the trailer tongue or on a jack post. Nobody hitches up a trailer expecting a breakaway, but that doesn't mean you should tow unprepared. Be ready for anything with a CURT breakaway kit.

CURT offers a variety of high-quality trailer hitches and accessories for select vehicle models. Find the perfect fit for your towing needs at TowUniverse.

The CURT Breakaway Battery Charger is a 12-volt lead-acid battery system designed for trailers with electric brakes. It includes a sealed lead-acid battery, a charger, and a breakaway switch. The system charges the trailer's breakaway battery from the tow vehicle's 12-volt system when connected, ensuring the trailer brakes remain functional if the trailer becomes detached from the tow vehicle.
Two battery options are available: P/N 1023 (4 amp/hr capacity, 225 mA 20-hour rate) and P/N 2023 (5 amp/hr capacity, 250 mA 20-hour rate). Both are 3.54" long, 2.76" wide, 4.13" high, weigh 3.8 lbs, and have fasten tab terminals of .187" x .032". Maximum discharge current for both is 40 amps. Maximum charge current must be limited to 1.2 amps.
The system is designed for trailers with electric brakes that are towed by vehicles with a 12-volt electrical system. The manual does not specify exclusions by vehicle make, model, or year, or by trailer type beyond the requirement for electric brakes. Consult the manufacturer at 1-800-738-8713 or 1-800-786-7968 for compatibility with your specific vehicle and trailer.
The kit includes a 12-volt sealed lead-acid battery (P/N 1023 or 2023), a charger, a breakaway switch, a battery case, and wiring. The manual does not specify all fasteners or tools included. Contact CURT Manufacturing at 1-800-738-8713 for a complete parts list.
Check the condition of the battery prior to installation and prior to each trip. Inspect the battery for damage, corrosion, or leaks before proceeding with installation.
Mount the battery case securely to the trailer frame, jack post, or other suitable location on the trailer. The manual does not specify exact mounting locations or hardware. Ensure the mounting location is secure and protected from excessive vibration and shock.
Bolt the breakaway switch to the frame of the trailer or to the battery case bracket. The manual does not specify bolt sizes or quantities.
Wire the system per the schematic diagram provided in the manual. The key rule is: the negative terminal must attach to ground, and the positive terminal must attach to the breakaway switch. Improper wiring will destroy the brake control. The manual provides two diagrams—one with charger and one without. Properly insulate all connections. Note that wire color coding is not standard among manufacturers, so follow function rather than color.
Remove the charger and battery from the battery case. Check and install the battery and charger into the battery case. Feed wires out the back of the case, then close the top.
Maximum charge current must be limited to 1.2 amps or less. Charge current above 2.3 amps will result in shortened service life. If recharging the battery using a commercial AC-to-DC charger, ensure the 12-volt charge is limited to 1.2 amps or less.
The maximum current drawn from the tow vehicle's battery is 1.2 amps. This current will be drawn at any time the tow vehicle is connected to the trailer, unless a battery isolator is installed.
A battery isolator is an optional device that can be installed in the 12-volt supply line (BLACK wire for tow charger) to charge the breakaway battery only when the tow vehicle engine is running. This prevents the tow vehicle battery from being drained when the vehicle is parked. The manual does not specify whether the isolator is included or must be purchased separately.
The negative terminal must attach to ground and the positive terminal must attach to the breakaway switch. Improper installation will destroy the brake control. A short or open circuit can result in a no-brake condition, which is a safety hazard.
Check your breakaway system periodically to ensure that wiring and connections are secure. The manual does not specify an exact interval. A short or open circuit can result in a no-brake condition.
To maximize battery life: (1) Avoid over or undercharge—this is the single worst enemy of lead-acid batteries. (2) Do not store the battery in a discharged state or at elevated ambient temperatures. (3) Avoid exposing the battery to heat; service life is shortened considerably at ambient temperatures above 30°C (86°F). (4) After six to nine months of storage, recharge the battery. (5) Charge at the proper rate—current limited to 1.2 amps or less. (6) Provide adequate air circulation when charging. (7) Do not charge the battery in any container besides the supplied battery box.
Under normal operating conditions, the battery has a service life of 4–5 years in standby applications or 200–1000 charge/discharge cycles, depending on depth of discharge and rate of charge.
If excessive discharging occurs, recharge the battery using a Heavy Duty Two Stage/Maintenance Charger. If using a commercial AC-to-DC charger, ensure the 12-volt charge is limited to 1.2 amps or less.
Do not disassemble the battery; contact with sulfuric acid may cause harm. Do not place batteries in close proximity to objects that can produce sparks or flames. Do not expose the battery case to organic solvents or adhesives. Do not throw batteries into fire; batteries so disposed may rupture or explode. Fasten batteries tightly and make provisions for shock absorption if exposure to shock or vibration is likely.
Avoid exposing the battery to heat. Service life is shortened considerably at ambient temperatures above 30°C (86°F). Do not store the battery at elevated ambient temperatures.
The system is designed for trailers with electric brakes towed by 12-volt vehicles. For specific compatibility with your vehicle and trailer, call CURT Manufacturing at 1-800-738-8713.
The manual does not mention drilling. The breakaway switch is bolted to the trailer frame or battery case bracket, and the battery case is mounted securely. Contact CURT Manufacturing at 1-800-738-8713 for installation details.
