Whether you're towing a compact car or a full-size truck, CURT has the perfect solution to help you Bring It! CURT towed-vehicle RV harnesses are a vehicle-specific, plug-and-play solution to wiring your vehicle for dinghy towing. They use original-equipment-compatible connectors to plug into your vehicle's wiring system without any cutting, splicing or soldering required. They provide a standard 4-way flat connector to plug into the RV socket and synchronize the vehicle's tail lights, turn signals and brake lights with the RV's. Because each towed-vehicle RV harness has a vehicle-specific design, installation is fast and easy. This particular RV dinghy towing wiring harness is designed for specific years of the Jeep Grand Cherokee. CURT RV harnesses are also built to provide long-lasting operation. They feature integrated block diodes that protect the vehicle's circuits from the RV signals. They isolate the sensitive vehicle electronics, keeping them from overheating and short circuiting. Every CURT towed-vehicle RV harness comes ready to install with all necessary hardware included. They also come with a 4-way flat extension to provide plenty of length to plug into the RV socket, as well as a connector mounting bracket to mount the connector on the vehicle.

Yes, the CURT 58940 Custom Towed-Vehicle RV Wiring Harness for Dinghy Towing, Fits Select Jeep Grand Cherokee (Part #BKDK58940) is designed to fit the 2007-2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee.
The CURT 58940 Custom Towed-Vehicle RV Wiring Harness for Dinghy Towing, Fits Select Jeep Grand Cherokee (Part #BKDK58940) Refer to the included instructions for installation details. Basic hand tools are typically all you need.
The CURT 58940 is an RV harness wiring kit designed for SUVs and Vans. It provides electrical connections between your vehicle's taillight wiring and an RV or trailer, allowing you to control trailer lights from your vehicle's brake, turn signal and running light circuits.
The CURT 58940 is designed for SUVs and Vans with wiring locations S1 (behind driver side taillight housing) and S2 (behind passenger side taillight housing). Check your vehicle's taillight configuration against these locations. The manual does not specify vehicle makes, models or years, so contact CURT or your dealer to confirm fitment for your specific vehicle.
You will need: a flathead screwdriver, fishwire, and a utility knife. A drill with a 3/32" bit is also required for mounting the 4-flat bracket to the front frame rail.
The manual shows a product photo and lists included parts but does not itemize them in detail. Based on the installation steps, the kit includes: an RV harness with connectors, cable ties, a white ground wire with ring terminal, a mounting bracket with screws, a 4-flat dust cover, and a grounding screw. Contact CURT or your dealer for a complete parts list.
The manual states 'It may be necessary to remove spare tire during install' because the RV harness must be routed along the rear frame rail and spare tire interference is possible. Check your vehicle's spare tire location before starting; you may need to remove it temporarily.
Open the rear tailgate. Using a flathead screwdriver, remove the plastic caps covering the clips that hold the taillights to the vehicle. Gently pull both taillights away from the vehicle to locate the factory wiring harness connectors. Separate the connectors from the taillight housing carefully, taking care not to damage the locking tabs. Inspect connectors for dirt and debris and clean if necessary.
On the driver side, insert the RV harness end with yellow wire between the separated factory connectors. Make sure the connectors are fully inserted with locking tabs in place. On the passenger side, route the harness with custom wiring ends containing green wire up through the opening using a fishwire, then insert the RV harness end between the separated connectors, again ensuring full insertion with locking tabs engaged.
Route the 4-flat portion of the RV harness down through the taillight opening on the driver's side. Secure it to the existing factory wiring harness with cable ties as it runs along the brake lines toward the front of the vehicle. Continue routing it up through the engine compartment, along the driver's side, and down behind the driver-side headlight. Alternatively, you may route it along the outside of the frame rail; if using this alternate route, skip Step 9. Use cable ties to secure the harness along the entire path, avoiding areas with moving parts, sharp edges, or heat sources.
Yes. You must drill two 3/32" pilot holes in the front frame rail to mount the 4-flat bracket. You may also need to drill a 3/32" pilot hole for the grounding screw if a suitable existing screw with nut is not available near the connector. Before drilling, check for hidden items behind or under any surface to avoid damage. Do not drill through the vehicle body or any exposed surface.
Locate a suitable grounding point near the connector, such as an existing screw with nut in the vehicle frame. If none is available, drill a 3/32" pilot hole for the provided screw. The area should be free of rust, dirt and paint. Secure the white ground wire using the ring terminal and the provided screw.
Locate the front frame rail that goes across the front of the vehicle and find a suitable position to mount the 4-flat bracket. Using the bracket as a template, mark the two holes. Drill two 3/32" pilot holes and attach the bracket using the two remaining screws. Secure the 4-flat harness to the frame rail with a cable tie. Take care not to drill through the vehicle body or any exposed surface.
Secure any excess wire so that it is not drooping or dangling, but not so tight that it causes unnecessary strain, which could lead to breakage over time. After removing slack from the 4-flat wire, tighten any cable ties and add as needed. Use a cable tie to fasten any excess wire to a solid spot along the driver-side inner fender.
Reinstall all items removed during installation. If the negative battery terminal was disconnected at the beginning, reconnect it. Install the provided 4-flat dust cover to help prevent corrosion. Test the installation for proper function using a test light or by connecting a properly equipped tow vehicle.
Signal circuits (turn signals): 7.5 amps per side. Tail/Running circuits: 7.5 amps total. Do not exceed the product rating or your tow vehicle's lamp load rating, whichever is lower. Check your vehicle owner's manual or contact the vehicle manufacturer for more information about your vehicle's lamp load capacity.
Do not exceed the product rating (7.5 amps per side for signal circuits, 7.5 amps total for tail/running circuits) or your tow vehicle's lamp load rating, whichever is lower. Check your vehicle owner's manual or contact the vehicle manufacturer to determine your vehicle's maximum lamp load capacity.
Once installed, test for proper function by using a test light or by connecting a properly equipped tow vehicle. This will verify that all circuits (brake, turn signal, and running lights) are functioning correctly.
Periodic inspection of all wires and connections should be performed to ensure there is no visible damage or loose connections. The manual does not specify an inspection interval; consult your vehicle owner's manual or contact CURT for recommended maintenance schedules.
The installation is rated as Moderate difficulty. It requires basic tools (flathead screwdriver, fishwire, utility knife, and a drill), careful routing of wiring harnesses, and drilling two 3/32" holes. Most vehicle owners with mechanical aptitude can complete the installation, though professional installation is available.
The CURT 58940 is designed for SUVs and Vans with wiring locations S1 and S2 (behind both taillight housings). Confirm your vehicle's taillight configuration matches these locations before purchasing.
Periodically inspect all wires and connections for visible damage or loose connections. Install the provided 4-flat dust cover to help prevent corrosion.
