The Curt 58920 is a powered converter harness system that allows a tow vehicle to control the brake, turn signal, and taillight functions of a towed RV. It includes a converter module, a 4-flat extension harness, wiring, and mounting hardware. The system converts the tow vehicle's lighting signals to control the RV's brake and taillight combination lamps.
Your vehicle must have a 12 volt negative ground electrical system. The converter system is designed only for 12 volt negative ground systems and will not function on other voltage or ground configurations.
You will need a wire stripper, wire crimper, and cutting tool. You may also need a drill if you do not have an existing ground point on the vehicle frame.
The kit includes a converter module, a 4-flat extension harness with dust cover, a white ground wire with ring terminal, a mounting screw for the ground connection, cable ties, double-sided tape for mounting the converter box, and a fuse holder with 10-amp fuse. Locate the breakout on the RV harness labeled 'For trailer use only: converter required'. Identify and remove the protective dust cover from the RV-harness add-on breakout. Press down on the female 4-way connector and pull outward to separate it from the RV-harness. Inspect the connectors for dirt and debris and clean if necessary. Then plug the mating connector on the converter harness into the RV-harness.
Locate a suitable grounding point near the connector, such as an existing screw with nut in the vehicle frame. If no existing hole is available, drill a 3/32" pilot hole for the provided screw. The area should be free of rust, dirt, and paint. Secure the white ground wire using the ring terminal and provided screw. If possible, use the existing hole drilled for the RV-harness ground wire.

Before drilling, check for miscellaneous items that may be hidden behind or under any surface to avoid damage and personal injury. This is especially important when drilling the ground wire pilot hole or routing the power wire through sheet metal.
If the harness is mounted in the interior of a hatch or trunk, route the 4-flat through the hatch or trunk far enough away so the harness does not pinch in the locking mechanism. When not in use, roll up and place in the trunk or hatch. If the harness is mounted on the exterior, route the 4-flat near the vehicle hitch and secure to the vehicle or hitch. Secure any loose wire with the provided cable ties.
The 4-flat harness has four color-coded wires: white (ground), green (right turn/brake), brown (taillights), and yellow (left turn/brake). These functions will only work on the brake/taillight combination lamp.
Use 12 GA wire or larger for the power lead from the vehicle battery to the converter. Route this wire to the vehicle battery location, taking care to avoid any pinch points and hot or rotating components.
When passing the power wire through sheet metal, use an existing grommet, add a grommet, or use silicone to protect the power wire from sharp edges. This prevents damage to the wire insulation and potential electrical hazards.
The battery connection must be fuse-protected with a 10-amp maximum fuse. Exceeding this rating can cause loss of warranty, overheating, and potential fire. Do not exceed the product rating or tow vehicle lamp load rating, whichever is lower.
Signal Circuits are rated at 3.0 amps per side. Tail/Running Circuits are rated at 6.0 amps total. Do not exceed these product ratings or the tow vehicle lamp load rating, whichever is lower.
Locate a suitable position to mount the converter box. Clean the surface prior to mounting. Remove the paper from the back of the double-sided tape and press the converter against the surface. Secure any loose wires behind the taillights with the provided cable ties.
When not in use, store the 4-flat extension harness inside the vehicle. If the harness is mounted in the interior of a hatch or trunk, roll it up and place it in the trunk or hatch to prevent it from pinching in the locking mechanism.
With the 4-flat extension plugged into the RV harness on one end and the RV on the other, perform a function test. These functions will only work on the brake/taillight combination lamp. All steps must be followed to ensure the towed-vehicle RV harness will function properly. Test by connecting a properly wired tow vehicle.
Install the 10-amp fuse in the fuse holder after all other installation steps are complete. Do not install the fuse until the power wire is fully routed and all other connections are made.
After installation is complete, install the provided 4-flat dust cover to help prevent corrosion. The dust cover should be placed over the 4-flat connector when the harness is not in use.
Reinstall all items removed during installation. Secure any loose wires behind the taillights with the provided cable ties. Install the provided 4-flat dust cover to help prevent corrosion. Perform a function test by connecting a properly wired tow vehicle with the 4-flat extension plugged into the RV harness on one end and the RV on the other.
