Always verify your specific year, make, and model before ordering.
The CURT Custom Towed-Vehicle RV Wiring Harness, Select Chevrolet Silverado, GMC Sierra Trailer Connector Kit (Part #BKDK58984) Refer to the included instructions for installation details. Basic hand tools are typically all you need.
Part 58984 is a custom RV harness with a 4-flat connector designed for trucks. It allows you to connect a trailer with functioning trailer lights to your tow vehicle, enabling the trailer lights to operate in sync with your vehicle's taillights.
The manual indicates part 58984 is designed for trucks (T), but does not specify vehicle makes, models, years, or configurations. Contact Curt Manufacturing or consult a fitment database to confirm compatibility with your specific truck before purchasing.
You will need: a drill, a 3/32" drill bit, a flathead screwdriver, and a cutting tool. You will also need fish wire (or a substitute such as a cut-up wire hanger, stiff wire, rope or string) to route the harness through the engine compartment.
The harness includes a custom RV wiring harness with a 4-flat connector, a white ground wire with a ring terminal, a ground screw, a 4-flat dust cover, and zip ties. The harness has yellow and green wires for connection to the vehicle's taillight connectors.
Yes. Step 1 requires you to locate the vehicle battery and disconnect the negative battery terminal. Fasten this wire down and away from the battery while completing the installation. Reconnect it only after all other steps are complete and items removed during installation have been reinstalled.
The manual rates the installation difficulty as 'Easy' based on time and effort involved, but notes that difficulty may vary depending on installer expertise, vehicle condition, and proper tools and equipment. No statement is made requiring professional installation.
The taillight wiring connectors are located on the driver side of the vehicle between the frame rail and the spare tire. You may need to trace the wires back to the taillight housing to locate them. The connectors will be similar in design to those on the custom RV harness.
Separate the vehicle's taillight connectors from the taillight housing, taking care not to damage the locking tabs. Insert the custom wiring end with the yellow wire between the separated connectors. Make sure the connectors are fully inserted with locking tabs in place. Repeat this process on the passenger side with the green wire.
Route the connector with the green wire along the back of the vehicle to the passenger side. Secure it in place with zip ties as needed. Repeat this process with the green wire on the passenger side of the vehicle.
Drilling may be required. You must locate a grounding point near the box, such as an existing screw or bolt in the vehicle frame. If no suitable existing fastener is available, you will need to drill a 3/32" pilot hole. Before drilling, check for miscellaneous items that may be hidden behind or under any surface to avoid damage and personal injury.
You need a 3/32" drill bit. This is used to drill a pilot hole for the ground screw if no existing fastener is available to secure the white ground wire with its ring terminal.
The grounding area must be free from rust, dirt, and paint. Use an abrasive pad or paper to remove rust and paint from the area. You can then secure the white ground wire with its ring terminal to an existing fastener, or drill a 3/32" pilot hole and use the provided ground screw.
Route the 4-flat above and along the frame rail to just behind the driver-side front wheel and loosely zip tie in place (Step 5). From the driver-side front wheel, route it to the rear of the driver-side wheel well (Step 6). From the engine compartment on the driver side next to the hood hinge, pull back the rubber filler and use fish wire to pull the 4-flat through the blind hole between the inner and outer fender to the top of the engine compartment (Step 7). Then route it under the outer fender mounts and around the washer fluid tank, and mount it to the driver-side front core support with zip ties (Step 8).
Fish wire is a technique to push or pull an electrical wire through a blind hole. Make sure the wire is long enough to stick out on the other side. Insert the fish wire through the blind hole and locate it on the other side. Use tape to secure the harness to the fish wire and pull back up. If the fish wire or harness gets hung up, you may need to push back down, wiggle it around, or twist the wire to loosen it. Fish wire can be anything from a cut-up wire hanger, stiff wire, rope or string depending on what is needed.
Secure excess wire so that it is not drooping or dangling, but not so tight that it causes unnecessary strain to the wire, which could lead to breakage over time. After removing slack from the 4-flat wire, tighten any zip ties and add as needed.
Reinstall all items removed during installation. If the negative battery terminal was disconnected at the beginning, reconnect it. Install the provided 4-flat dust cover to help prevent corrosion. Test the harness for proper function by attaching the 4-flat to any vehicle with functioning trailer lights; the taillights on the tow vehicle should function along with the taillights on the towing vehicle.
Once the custom wiring harness is installed, verify that it is functioning by attaching the 4-flat to any vehicle with functioning trailer lights. The taillights on the tow vehicle should function along with the taillights on the towing vehicle. You can also use a test light to verify proper function.
Periodic inspection of all wires and connections should be performed to ensure there is no visible damage or loose connections. The 4-flat dust cover should be installed to help prevent corrosion.
The manual does not specify a weight or load rating for part 58984. However, it warns: do not exceed the product rating or tow vehicle lamp load rating, whichever is lower. Contact Curt Manufacturing for the specific product rating.
Before drilling, check for miscellaneous items that may be hidden behind or under any surface to avoid damage and personal injury. The grounding area must be free from rust, dirt, and paint before securing the ground wire.
