Open the hatch and remove the two fastener covers using a small flathead screwdriver. Using a 7mm socket, remove the taillight fasteners. Then pull the taillight straight rearward. Open the red locking tab by pulling out and applying pressure to the lock. This will allow the connectors to come apart. Separate the connectors from the taillight housing, taking care not to damage the locking tabs. Repeat on the other side.
Remove the two T-15 Torx screws from the inner fender and loosen the wheel well trim push fasteners using a panel trim removal tool until you clear the bumper cover. Loosen the bumper cover from the body all the way up to the rear taillight. On the driver's side, insert the RV harness end with the yellow wire between the separated taillight connectors, ensuring they are fully inserted with locking tabs in place. Route the yellow wire between the vehicle body and bumper cover, following the same route as the vehicle factory harness.
From under the rear bumper, route the RV harness end with the green wire along the backside of the bumper cover from the driver's side to the passenger's side. Use cable ties as needed, but do not completely tighten them, allowing for adjustment later. Repeat the taillight connector insertion steps on the passenger side using the harness end with the green wire.
Locate a suitable grounding point near the connector, such as an existing screw with nut in the vehicle frame. If no suitable point exists, drill a 3/32" pilot hole for the provided screw. The area should be free of rust, dirt, and paint. Secure the white ground wire using the ring terminal and provided screw.
Drilling may be required. You must drill a 3/32" pilot hole for the ground wire screw if no suitable existing screw with nut is available in the vehicle frame. Before drilling, check for miscellaneous items that may be hidden behind or under any surface to avoid damage and personal injury.
Route the 4-way flat between the muffler on the driver's side and the vehicle body up to the back side of the rear wheel well. Continue routing above the rear drive line suspension and the bottom of the vehicle floor to the rear of the fuel tank. Then route the harness wires between the fuel tank and the driver's side sub frame up to the back of the front tire. Use cable ties to secure the wires without tightening them, allowing for adjustment later.
Fishwire is a method to push or pull an electrical wire through a blind hole. From the engine compartment on the driver's side, run a fishwire down between the inner and outer fender. The fishwire will come out at the back of the front tire. Use tape to secure the harness to the fishwire and pull it back up into the engine compartment. If the fishwire gets hung up, you may need to push back down, wiggle it around, or twist the wire to loosen it. Fishwire can be made from a cut-up wire hanger, stiff wire, rope, or string.
Route the 4-way flat under the rubber hood seal and along the driver's side front fender to the back side of the headlight and mount it there.
Pull all excess wire so that it is not loose, but do not pull it too tight. Pulling too tight can cause unnecessary strain on the wire and could cause breakage over time. After removing all slack from the 4-way flat wire, tighten any cable ties and add as needed.
Once the RV harness is installed, verify that it is functioning by attaching the 4-way flat to any vehicle with functioning taillights. The taillights on the vehicle to be towed should function along with the taillights on the vehicle that is powering them. For testing purposes only, you may temporarily connect the taillights to the custom harness, but they should be removed once the test is complete.
Reinstall the bumper cover, wheel well trim, and taillights. Route the 4-way flat connector as described in the installation steps. Pull all excess wire to remove slack without pulling too tight. Tighten cable ties and add as needed. Reinstall all items removed during installation. If the negative battery terminal was disconnected at the beginning, reconnect it. Install the provided 4-way flat dust cover to help prevent corrosion.
