If your vehicle is not equipped with wiring for towing a trailer, CURT custom wiring is the ideal solution. A custom wiring harness -- also called a T-connector -- is a simple, plug-and-play electrical device that plugs into your automotive electric system and provides a standard, universal trailer wiring connection. This is done using two or more vehicle-specific, OEM-compatible connectors to plug into the taillight assembly, eliminating the need for cutting, splicing and soldering during installation. Custom wiring harnesses are made vehicle-specific, and while they are not available for all vehicles, they do offer one of the fastest, easiest and most secure ways to wire a vehicle for towing. This particular plug-in harness provides a 4-way flat connector socket and is designed to be a custom wiring harness to fit certain years of the Kia EV9 (to verify your vehicle compatibility, see application info). It comes with all necessary wiring components to establish a reliable trailer wiring connection, as well as a dust cover to keep the connector clean when not in use. You have a picture in mind of your next destination -- maybe it's the boat landing at your favorite fishing spot, maybe it's a campsite that overlooks one of nature's masterpieces, or maybe it's the next big jobsite. However, turning that picture into a reality takes more than just daydreaming. It takes a solid connection and the right amount of power. CURT custom wiring is made with some of the most sophisticated technology in the industry and is designed to install with ease, giving you a long-lasting electrical connection for your towing hitch setup.

The CURT Custom Wiring Harness, 4-Way Flat Output, Select Kia EV9 (Part #BKDK56526) Refer to the included instructions for installation details. Basic hand tools are typically all you need.
Part 56526 is designed for SUVs and Vans (S-series vehicles). The manual does not list specific vehicle models or years. Contact Curt Manufacturing or consult a fitment database to confirm compatibility with your exact vehicle make, model, and year before purchasing.
The 56526 is a wiring converter system that routes trailer lighting signals from your vehicle's factory taillights to a 4-flat trailer connector. It converts the vehicle's taillight, brake, and turn signal circuits into a standard trailer plug format. The system includes a powered converter module that must be connected to the vehicle battery with a 15-amp fuse for protection.
No. The converter system is designed only for 12-volt negative ground electrical systems. It cannot be used on 24-volt systems or vehicles with positive ground systems.
Required tools are: ratchet, 10mm socket, 14mm socket, panel trim removal tool, small flathead screwdriver, crimp tool, cutting tool, wire stripper, wire cutter, fish wire (or equivalent such as a cut-up wire hanger or stiff wire), electrical tape, and a drill capable of making a 3/32" pilot hole. Proper tools will improve installation quality and reduce time required.
Yes. You must disconnect the negative battery terminal before beginning installation. In Step 1, locate the vehicle battery on the driver side under the hood, remove the two rubber mats from the storage area, remove the driver side panel, and disconnect the negative battery terminal. Fasten this wire down and away from the battery during installation. Reconnect it only after all other steps are complete and the harness has been tested.
The manual rates the installation difficulty as 'Easy' based on time and effort involved. However, difficulty may vary depending on installer expertise, vehicle condition, and availability of proper tools. The manual does not explicitly require professional installation, but you should have basic electrical knowledge, the correct tools, and comfort working with vehicle wiring and battery connections.
In Step 2, open the rear hatch. Using a small flathead screwdriver, open the two taillight fastener doors. Using a 10mm socket, remove the two fasteners on both sides. In Step 3, remove the taillights by pulling straight back using a scratch-less/dent-less trim tool. Note that the taillight alignment pins are tight. Disconnect the taillight housings carefully to avoid damaging the locking tabs, and set the taillight aside. Repeat on the other side of the vehicle.
In Step 5, from under the vehicle, remove the rear paneling using a trim tool for ten push fasteners, two threaded push fasteners, and two 14mm fasteners. In Step 4, use a panel tool to remove the bumper/body push fastener on both sides of the vehicle.
Fish wire is a tool used to push or pull an electrical wire through a blind hole (a hole you cannot see through). Make sure the wire is long enough to stick out on the other side. Insert the fish wire through the blind hole and locate it on the other side. Use tape to secure the harness to the fish wire and pull back up. If the fish wire or harness gets hung up, you may have to push back down, wiggle it around, or twist the wire to loosen it. Fish wire can be anything from a cut-up wire hanger, stiff wire, rope, or string depending on what is needed.
In Step 6, from the driver-side taillight opening, route the fish wire down between the body and the bumper cover. From under the vehicle, locate the fish wire and attach it to the housing of the custom harness with the yellow wire. Pull the harness up to the factory wiring and attach to the housings. In Step 7, repeat this process on the passenger side using the green wire.
In Step 8, locate a flat spot on the driver-side underbody area and adhere the black converter box using the provided double-sided tape. The converter should be mounted in a location that is accessible and protected from water and debris.
You may need to drill a hole, depending on available grounding points. In Step 9, locate a grounding point such as an existing screw or bolt in the frame of the vehicle. If no suitable existing fastener is available, drill a 3/32" pilot hole. The area should be free from rust, dirt, and paint—use an abrasive pad or paper to remove rust and paint. Secure the white ground wire with the ring terminal on the existing fastener or with the provided ground screw. Before drilling, check for miscellaneous items that may be hidden behind or under any surface to avoid damage and personal injury.
The power wire from the battery is 12 GA (12 gauge) or larger. The harness wire colors are: Green = Right turn, Red = Brake, Yellow = Left turn, Brown = Taillight. The ground wire is white with a ring terminal. The black converter box connects to the positive battery terminal via the black power wire, which must be fused with a 15-amp maximum fuse.
The battery connection must be fuse-protected with a 15-amp maximum fuse. Do not exceed 15 amps. Exceeding the product rating can cause loss of warranty, overheating, and potential fire. Install the fuse after all other installation steps are complete.
Signal circuits are rated at 5.0 amps per side. Tail/Running circuits are rated at 7.5 amps total. Do not exceed these ratings or the product rating, whichever is lower. Also do not exceed the tow vehicle lamp load rating.
Route the 12 GA wire to the vehicle battery location, taking care to avoid any pinch points and hot or rotating components. When passing the power wire through sheet metal, use an existing grommet, add a grommet, or use silicone to protect the power wire from sharp edges. Secure the power wire to the vehicle chassis using the cable ties provided. The black power wire connects to the positive battery (+) terminal using a ring terminal. Disconnect the negative battery (-) cable before wiring the power wire.
Secure the 4-flat harness with the green wire under the vehicle along the rear bumper using cable ties. When in use, route the 4-flat with the center of the vehicle and out of the hatch to the trailer, staying clear of the hatch's latching mechanism. When not in use, roll up and store in a convenient, out-of-the-way location. Secure any loose wires with provided cable ties. Install the provided 4-flat dust cover to help prevent corrosion.
Do not lay tools across the positive battery terminal (typically noted with red covers or a red '+' symbol), as this can cause a ground short resulting in sparks and/or electrical shocks. Disconnect the negative battery terminal before beginning installation. Fasten the disconnected wire down and away from the battery during installation. Do not reconnect the battery until all other steps are complete and the harness has been tested with a test light, 4-flat tester, or functioning trailer.
Before drilling, check for miscellaneous items that may be hidden behind or under any surface to avoid damage and personal injury. This is especially important when drilling the 3/32" pilot hole for the ground wire fastener in Step 9.
Once the 12-volt power wire is connected to the harness, verify that the harness is functioning by attaching the battery and testing with a test light, 4-flat tester, or a functioning trailer. Do not reconnect the negative battery terminal until this test is complete. This ensures the converter is working properly before final assembly.
Periodic inspection of all wires and connections should be performed to ensure there is no visible damage or loose connections. The manual does not specify an inspection interval, so consult the vehicle owner's manual or contact Curt Manufacturing for recommended maintenance schedules.
The manual does not specify a maximum tow load or trailer rating. It states only that you must not exceed the product rating or tow vehicle lamp load rating, whichever is lower. Consult the vehicle owner's manual or contact Curt Manufacturing for the specific tow capacity and lamp load limits for your vehicle.
The kit includes a black converter box, a custom harness with yellow, green, red, and brown wires, a white ground wire with ring terminal, a ground screw, double-sided tape for mounting the converter, cable ties for routing wires, a 4-flat dust cover, and a 15-amp fuse holder with fuse. The manual does not list all included hardware in detail; refer to the product packaging or contact Curt Manufacturing for a complete parts list.
Yes. After completing all installation steps, reinstall all items removed during installation. This includes the taillights, rear paneling, bumper fasteners, and driver side panel. Ensure all fasteners are properly secured before testing the system.
The 56526 is designed for SUVs and Vans (S-series). Confirm your specific vehicle make, model, and year with Curt Manufacturing or a fitment database before purchasing.
No. The 56526 is designed only for 12-volt negative ground systems.
Yes. Disconnect the negative battery terminal before beginning installation and reconnect only after all steps are complete and the harness is tested.
Drilling may be required. If no existing bolt or screw is available for the ground wire, you must drill a 3/32" pilot hole. Check for hidden items before drilling to avoid damage.
A 15-amp maximum fuse is required. Do not exceed 15 amps. Install the fuse after all other steps are complete.
The power wire from the battery is 12 GA (12 gauge) or larger. Use a ring terminal for the battery connection.
If the fish wire or harness gets hung up on something during pulling, you may have to push back down, wiggle it around, or twist the wire to loosen it from what it is hung up on. This is a normal part of the fish wire technique and may require several attempts to free the wire.
First, verify that the negative battery terminal is properly reconnected. Second, test the harness with a test light, 4-flat tester, or functioning trailer to confirm proper operation. Third, check that all wire connections are secure and not damaged. Fourth, verify that the 15-amp fuse is installed and not blown. Fifth, ensure the ground wire is properly secured to a clean, rust-free grounding point on the vehicle frame.
