The CURT deep drop weight distribution hitch is a specialized towing system that provides improved vehicle and trailer control by leveling the trailer and more evenly distributing its tongue weight across the axles. This model is made particularly for larger, lifted trucks, featuring an adjustable shank that provides a drop up to 7" and rise up to 10-1/2". Weight distribution hitches are commonly used on travel trailers and campers but can also be applied to other large loads. This CURT WD hitch comes with a 2" x 2" deep drop shank and is compatible with most class 3, 4 and 5 trailer hitches (NOTE: Never exceed the lowest weight capacity of any towing component). This trunnion bar weight distribution hitch features a heavy-duty formed head and square spring bars constructed from forged steel. It offers a gross trailer weight capacity up to 10,000 lbs. and a tongue weight capacity of 1,000 lbs. It also includes hook-up brackets, spring bar safety chains and a pin and clip. The CURT 17352 is a weight distributing hitch head assembly designed to distribute the tongue weight of a trailer across the tow vehicle's axles, improving stability and handling. It uses spring bars and lift brackets to level the tow vehicle when coupled to a trailer. The hitch head accepts a 1 1/4" threaded-shank trailer ball and can support trailers with A-frame or pole tongues.
The CURT 17352 is designed for a 1 1/4" threaded-shank trailer ball. If you need to use a 1" threaded-shank trailer ball instead, you must purchase the CURT reducer bushing #21101 separately and install it on the hitch head.
Yes, the CURT 17352 can be used with pole tongue trailers (straight tongue instead of A-frame). However, you will need to use a pole tongue adapter for hook-up of the weight distributing hitch lift brackets. The manual does not specify which adapter to use; consult your dealer or the manufacturer for the correct adapter for your trailer.
The CURT 17352 has two capacity ratings depending on whether spring bars are used. Without spring bars: maximum gross trailer weight (GTW) of 10,000 lbs. and tongue weight (TW) of 1,000 lbs. With spring bars: GTW of 8,000 to 10,000 lbs. and TW of 800 to 1,000 lbs. The tongue weight rating applies to a pair of spring bars used together, not an individual bar. Always use a matching pair of spring bars.
You will need a wrench to tighten bolts, a trailer tongue jack to level the trailer and raise it during installation, and a measuring tape to measure coupler height and vehicle bumper heights. The lift handle is included with the hitch. A level surface is required for accurate measurement and setup. If your tow vehicle has air springs, air shocks, or automatic leveling systems, you must deflate them to minimum recommended pressure before assembly and adjustment.
Yes. You must measure the trailer coupler height from pavement, the front and rear bumper heights of the tow vehicle from pavement, and calculate a target uncoupled ball height. For passenger cars, add 1/8" to the coupler height for each 100 lbs. of tongue weight. These measurements determine the correct position of the hitch head on the adjustable shank and are essential for proper weight distribution and vehicle handling.
1. Insert the adjustable shank into the receiver tube and secure with hitch pin and clip. 2. Position the hitch head on the shank at the height corresponding to your target ball height. 3. Install head tilt spacers loosely. 4. Attach the trailer ball to the hitch head. 5. Install the two spring bar assemblies with spring bar pins and clips, ensuring chain assemblies are on top. 6. Attach the trailer coupler to the ball. 7. Raise the trailer front and vehicle rear approximately 3" to install lift bracket chains. 8. Install lift brackets on the trailer tongue. 9. Adjust chain links and head tilt as needed. 10. Torque all 3/4" bolts to 200 ft. lbs. 11. Perform final connection checks.
Insert the adjustable shank (#2) into the receiver tube on the tow vehicle and secure it with the provided hitch pin (#10) and clip (#11). The shank must be used in the inverted position only. Check for adequate ground clearance before proceeding.
Slide the hitch head up or down on the adjustable shank to the nearest bolt hole alignment position that corresponds with the target ball height you calculated on page 2. Mark this position on the shank. The hitch head has multiple bolt hole positions spaced 11.25" apart to allow height adjustment.
Head tilt spacers (#13) are used to set the initial tilt angle of the hitch head. For initial setup, place the two spacers into the position shown in the manual. Tighten the top 3/4" bolts (#14 and #15) just enough to hold the spacers in place. These bolts will be fully torqued to 200 ft. lbs. only after the correct tilt setting has been determined through adjustment.
Secure the two spring bar assemblies (#3) with the provided spring bar pins (#6) and clips (#7). Ensure the chain assemblies are on the top side of the spring bars before pinning them in position. Before applying tension to the bars, ensure that two to three threads are exposed past the end of the nylock nut (#12). Always use a pair of spring bars with matching weight ratings.
Using the trailer tongue jack, lower the coupler onto the trailer ball and close the coupler latch. Do not retract the jack fully; allow it to support some of the tongue weight. Then raise the front of the trailer and back of the tow vehicle approximately 3" with the tongue jack. This makes it easier to install the chains onto the hooks of each lift bracket.
Position the spring bar parallel with the trailer tongue. Hold the lift chain vertical alongside the trailer tongue and position the lift bracket so the chain is centered between the bracket. Mark the bracket location on the trailer tongue. Install a 1/2" - 13 bolt (#16) into the threaded hole in the lift bracket, turn it until it contacts the trailer tongue, then tighten a 1/4-turn with a wrench. Do not over-tighten. If your trailer has an obstruction on one side of the frame, order an offset lift bracket kit from your dealer.
Before raising the lift bracket, raise the front of the trailer to reduce spring bar chain tension. Slip the marked chain link over the hook on the lift bracket. Insert the lift handle onto the heavier rod above the lift chain attachment. Using the handle, raise the lift bracket up and over center so it is fully seated against the mounting bracket. Secure with a clip through the lift and mounting bracket. Ensure the chain is not twisted and the hook extends through the link. Be sure the locking hair pin is in place once the lift bracket is in the up position.
Remove the locking pin from the lift bracket. Insert the lift handle onto the rod above the lift chain attachment. Carefully lower the bracket with the handle. It will require effort to bring the bracket over center and then to resist the chain tension as the bracket rotates downward.
The 3/4" bolts (#14 and #15) that secure the hitch head to the adjustable shank must be torqued to 200 ft. lbs. These bolts should be tightened only after the correct tilt position has been determined and the tow vehicle is sitting level. Failure to tighten these bolts to the specified torque may result in complete system failure.
There should be at least five links between the lift bracket and the spring bar. If fewer than five links remain, the chain and snap-up bracket will bind and the system will not function correctly. The number of links should be the same on both bars. Adjust the head tilt to accomplish the correct chain length.
If your tow vehicle cannot be leveled with the initial 'Position 1' head setting, increase the tilt position. Increasing head tilt allows more tension to be applied to the arms without exceeding the minimum five-link clearance. Use the tilt position table: if the difference between snap-up bracket height and spring bar height (X - Y) is 3.5", use Position 1; if 5.0", use Position 2; if 7.0", use Position 3; if 8.5", use Position 4; if 10.0", use Position 5. After determining the correct tilt position, tighten the 3/4" bolts to 200 ft. lbs.
Re-measure the front and rear bumper reference points that you marked before installation. If the front has settled much more than the rear, increase the number of chain links between the lift bracket and the spring bar. The spring bars should be nearly horizontal when correct height is achieved. Once even settling and correct spring bar position are achieved, mark the spring bar chain at the hooked position with paint for future hook-up reference.
Before towing, verify: 1. Pin and clip securing the adjustable shank to receiver. 2. Head to shank fasteners. 3. Trailer ball nut. 4. Coupler latch. 5. Snap-up bracket bolt. 6. Safety chains. 7. Lights and turn signals. 8. Braking system (including breakaway switch). All connections must be secure and functioning properly.
Keep the socket-mounted ends of the spring bars and lock pins in the head assembly free from dirt and well lubricated. Excessive wear in this area may indicate overload or inadequate lubrication. Keep the head assembly exterior clean and do not allow dirt or stones to lodge between the spring bars and head. Keep hitch parts painted to prevent rust and maintain appearance; do not paint over labels. Keep lift brackets clean and lubricated to ensure ease of operation. At the beginning of every tow day, coat the clevis pins in the head assembly with fibrous grease, clean the ball and coupler socket and coat the ball lightly with grease, check spring bar chains and U-bolts for wear and security, and verify all trailer balls are properly tightened and locking pins are secure.
The loaded ball height should never be greater than the uncoupled ball height. If the loaded trailer ball height is greater than the uncoupled height, reduce take-up on the spring bar chains, remeasure, and adjust until the proper height is obtained. Front wheel overload and loss of rear wheel traction can result from improper ball height, leading to unstable handling, reduced braking ability, and a tendency to jackknife when turning and braking simultaneously.
If the lift chain is angled fore or aft at the top within the lift bracket, it may catch on the bracket when the trailer turns. This could damage the lift bracket or pry it open. Position the lift bracket so the chain is centered between the bracket and held vertical. If your trailer has an obstruction on one side of the frame that prevents proper chain positioning, order an offset lift bracket kit from your dealer.
Before raising or lowering the lift bracket, raise the front of the trailer to reduce spring bar chain tension. This makes the operation easier and safer. Keep clear of the pivot path of all moving parts when there is tension on the spring bar chain. Maintain control of the lift handle at all times when raising or lowering the spring bar. Be sure the locking hair pin is in place once the lift bracket is in the up position.
Tongue weight should be 10-15% of the gross trailer weight for most trailers. Too low a tongue weight often produces a tendency to sway. The CURT 17352 supports tongue weights of 800 to 1,000 lbs. when spring bars are used, or up to 1,000 lbs. without spring bars.
A sway control device is recommended, as it can help minimize the effects of sudden maneuvers, wind gusts, and buffeting caused by passing vehicles. Use of a sway control device is especially recommended for trailers with a large surface area, such as travel trailers. The CURT 17352 head assembly will accept two sway control attachment balls.
Surge brakes require a small amount of fore and aft movement for their actuating mechanism to function correctly. To avoid restricting this movement, it may be necessary to increase the number of chain links between the lift brackets and spring bars by tilting the head down. However, surge brake actuators not designed for use with a weight distributing hitch may bind and not operate freely. Check your surge brake operating instructions for specific requirements regarding use with weight distributing hitches.
If any part of your towing system bottoms out or if you suspect damage may have occurred in any way, pull over and make a thorough inspection. Correct any problems before resuming travel. Severe bumps and badly undulating roads can damage your towing vehicle, hitch, and trailer, and should be negotiated at a slow, steady speed.
Yes. Remove the weight distribution hitch from the trailer hitch on the towing vehicle when not towing a trailer. This reduces the chances of striking the weight distribution hitch on the driveway or other objects and reduces the chance of parts being stolen.
Always hook up all of the trailer lights, electric brakes, and break-away switch connections whenever the trailer is being towed. Check at the beginning of every tow day that all electrical hook-ups are in working order.
