A sway control unit is an inexpensive solution to the problem of a wandering trailer. CURT sway control units are designed to attach to your vehicle and trailer at the coupling point and counteract any lateral movement in your trailer, keeping your tow load straighter on the road and giving you more control over your vehicle. The sway bar uses a material like that used in brake pads to provide the necessary resistance while still allowing your vehicle to complete proper turns with your trailer attached. The sway control mounts onto the frame of your trailer and connects to the vehicle's ball mount using a separate trailer ball from that used for coupling the trailer. CURT sway controls are adjustable and easy to install. They come with a sway unit, a trailer-mounted attachment ball and bolts, a hitch-mounted attachment ball, a weld-on tab, a mount reinforcement plate and attachment clips. Though a weight distribution hitch is not an ideal solution for trailer sway on its own, CURT weight distribution hitches are made to be combined with a sway control unit and many are available with a sway controls included for a complete package. The CURT 17200 is a sway control kit designed to reduce trailer sway during towing. It attaches to a weight distributing ball mount and the trailer frame, using an adjustable tension mechanism to dampen side-to-side movement. The kit includes a sway control unit (17200), trailer ball (40093), trailer-mounted attachment ball (17201), spacer plate, clips, self-tapping screws, and optionally a weld-on sway tab (45822) if your ball mount lacks a sway control ball hole.
The CURT 17200 is designed for weight distributing ball mounts. Most come equipped with a sway control ball plate already attached. If your ball mount does not have a sway control ball hole, you will need to use the weld-on sway tab (CURT# 45822) and have it welded to the ball mount by a qualified welding shop. The kit cannot be used on trailers with surge brakes.
No. The manual explicitly states the sway control cannot be used on trailers with surge brakes. If your trailer has surge brakes, this product is not compatible.
Most trailers require one sway control unit. However, larger or heavier trailers, or broad-sided trailers, may require the use of two sway control units. Consult the manual or contact CURT Manufacturing at 1.877.287.8634 to determine if your specific trailer needs two units.
The kit includes: one sway control trailer ball (CURT# 40093), one trailer-mounted attachment ball (CURT# 17201), one sway control unit (CURT# 17200), two clips, eight self-tapping screws, one spacer plate, and one weld-on sway tab (CURT# 45822). The weld-on tab is only needed if your ball mount does not have a sway control ball hole.
You will need a drill with an 11/32" drill bit to create holes in the trailer frame. If your ball mount lacks a sway control ball hole, you will also need a qualified welding shop to attach the weld-on sway tab. A wire brush or steel wool is needed for post-installation maintenance. A second person is required to observe the sway control during jackknife testing.
Yes. After initial assembly, a second person is required to watch the sway control and trailer while you slowly back the trailer in both directions into a jackknife position. This is necessary to check that the sway control does not hit the bumper or trailer frame and does not become fully compressed or come apart.
If your weight distributing ball mount is already equipped with a sway control ball plate, attach the sway control ball (CURT# 40093) to the ball mount using the hole provided. If no sway control ball hole is provided, use the weld-on sway tab (CURT# 45822) and have it welded to the ball mount by a qualified welding shop, positioned as shown in Figure 1 of the manual.
Measure 24 inches straight back from the center of the coupler to the right side of the trailer frame. The trailer-mounted attachment ball must be centered on this 24-inch measurement. Transfer the punch holes from the spacer plate to the trailer frame at this location.

Welding is required only if your weight distributing ball mount does not have a sway control ball hole. In that case, you must use the weld-on sway tab (CURT# 45822) and have it welded to the ball mount by a qualified welding shop. If your ball mount already has a sway control ball hole, no welding is needed.
After drilling the 11/32-inch holes in the trailer frame at the 24-inch measurement location, attach the spacer plate and trailer-mounted attachment ball (CURT# 17201) to the trailer frame using the eight self-tapping screws provided in the kit.
First, lubricate the threads on the handle with a drop of oil. Attach the socket on the slide bar to the sway control ball on the ball mount and secure it with a spring clip. Turn the On/Off handle three turns counterclockwise to release tension. Place the main body socket onto the trailer-mounted attachment ball and secure it with a spring clip. Then turn the On/Off handle clockwise and tighten firmly until the handle is parallel with the main body.
After connecting the sway control unit, have a second person watch the sway control and trailer while you slowly back the trailer in both directions into a jackknife position (maximum turning angle). Check that the sway control does not hit the bumper or trailer frame, and that it does not become fully compressed or come apart. If any of these occur when jackknifed, the sway control must be removed while backing.
Start with the factory preset tension and road test the sway control. If more sway control is needed, adjust the break tension screw 1/4 turn clockwise. Road test again and repeat this process (if necessary) until proper sway control is achieved. Remember that road and weather conditions, load, trailer design, power steering, wheel alignment, and the oscillation point of the tow vehicle and trailer all affect towing characteristics.
The sway control must be removed when towing in slippery conditions, such as wet, icy, gravel, or snow-covered roads. Additionally, if sway occurs while towing, do not speed up; sway increases with speed. If sway continues, stop the vehicle and inspect all towing equipment until the cause has been determined and corrected.
Towing a trailer changes the handling characteristics of the tow vehicle. Short wheelbase vehicles may induce sway when towing a trailer and require extreme caution. Never exceed your vehicle manufacturer's recommended towing capacity. Load trailers with heavy items on the floor in front of the axle, balanced side to side. Tongue weight should be 10-15% of gross trailer weight for most trailers. Insufficient tongue weight or tail-heavy trailers can cause sway.
After a 1,000-mile break-in period, remove the slide bar and clean it using a wire brush or steel wool. The slide bar should then be cleaned every 10,000 miles. Never paint or lubricate the slide bar. Any welding should be done by a qualified welding shop.
