The formed construction allows for a precise design and supplies the durability needed to manage the weight of heavy trailers. Something unique to the weight distribution hitch is its grease zerk fittings, built directly into the head, allowing for easy, continuous lubrication at the spring bar mounting location. The spring bars are installed from the underside of the WD head and are made with forged steel for optimum strength. Like other CURT weight distribution hitches, the round bar hitch comes with a highly adjustable shank and chain hookup brackets for the perfect amount of tension to level the load. The shank fits any 2" x 2" receiver tube opening, making it compatible with most class 3, class 4 and class 5 trailer hitches. The head is also compatible with our 2-1/2" weight distribution shanks to match the heaviest of class 5 hitches. The hookup brackets and spring bars of the CURT WD hitch use chains and a simple snap-up design for easy setup and adjustment. The Curt 17050 is a weight distributing hitch that uses spring bars and lift brackets to distribute trailer tongue weight across the tow vehicle's axles. This helps maintain level vehicle height when towing and improves stability, braking ability and handling. The 17050 is rated for a maximum gross trailer weight of 6,000 lbs and tongue weight of 600 lbs when used with spring bars.
The Curt 17050 is designed for trailers with A-frame tongues and a 1 1/4" threaded-shank hitch ball coupler. If your trailer has a straight (pole) tongue instead, you will need to order a pole tongue adapter kit from your local Curt dealer. The hitch ball you select must match your trailer coupler and have a load capacity equal to or exceeding your gross trailer weight.
Yes, but you must use the reducer bushing (part #7) included with the hitch. The 17050 is designed for a 1 1/4" threaded-shank ball by default. If you want to use a 1" ball instead, attach the reducer bushing to the head assembly before installing the ball.
These models differ in their weight capacity. The 17050 is rated for up to 6,000 lbs gross trailer weight and 600 lbs tongue weight with spring bars. The 17051 handles up to 8,000 lbs / 800 lbs, the 17052 up to 10,000 lbs / 1,000 lbs, and the 17057 up to 14,000 lbs / 1,400 lbs. Choose the model that matches your trailer's actual weight.
Spring bars are optional but recommended. Without spring bars, the 17050 is rated for a maximum gross trailer weight of 6,000 lbs and tongue weight of 600 lbs, but the actual weight rating depends on your trailer ball manufacturer's weight rating—do not exceed the ball's maximum rating. With spring bars, the 17050 is rated for 5,000–6,000 lbs gross trailer weight and 500–600 lbs tongue weight, which provides better weight distribution and stability.
No. The manual states that the tongue weight rating of the spring bars represents the capacity of a pair of bars, not an individual bar. You must always use a pair of spring bars, and they must be of the same weight rating. Using only one spring bar will not provide proper weight distribution and can lead to unstable handling.
The Curt 17050 can be installed on any tow vehicle with a receiver tube and hitch pin hole. However, you must never exceed your vehicle manufacturer's recommended towing capacity. First, assemble the lift chains to the tapered ends of each spring bar using 3/8" U-bolts, 3/8" washers and 3/8" nylock nuts. Allow 2 to 3 threads of the U-bolts to extend through the bottom of each locknut, and ensure the chain is free to move in the U-bolt. Apply heavy, fibrous grease to the round end of each spring bar. Push the greased end up into the head socket until you hear a click, which indicates the spring bar is locked in place. Keep the spring bars lubricated during operation; if additional grease is needed, use the grease zerk. To release a spring bar, lift up slightly and gently pull out the retaining pin in the hitch head.
Using the trailer tongue jack, lower the coupler onto the trailer ball and close the coupler latch. Do not retract the jack fully at this time; allow the jack to support some of the tongue weight. Then raise the front of the trailer and back of the tow vehicle approximately 3" with the tongue jack. This will allow easier installation of the chains onto the hook of each lift bracket.
1. Position the spring bar parallel with the trailer tongue and hold the lift chain vertical alongside the tongue. Position the lift bracket so the chain is centered between the bracket. 2. Mark the bracket location on the tongue. 3. Install the 1/2" - 13 x 3 3/4" bolt into the threaded hole in the lift bracket, turn it in until it contacts the tongue, then tighten a 1/4 turn with a wrench. Do not overtighten. 4. Place six 1/2" flat washers on the pin and insert the pin into the unthreaded hole in the upper portion of the head channel. 5. Install the head on the shank at the marked position. 6. Tighten the lower 5/8" hex bolt just enough to hold the head tight against the pin. 7. Place the head assembly into the hitch assembly on the towing vehicle and secure with the pin and clip.
1. Slip the marked chain link over the hook on the lift bracket. 2. Insert the lift handle onto the lift bracket rod above the lift chain hook. 3. Using the handle, raise the lift bracket up and over center so that it is fully seated against the mounting bracket. 4. Secure by inserting the clip through the lift bracket and mounting bracket. Ensure the chain is not twisted and the hook extends through the link. Before raising or lowering, raise the front of the trailer to reduce spring bar chain tension, which makes operation easier and safer.
1. Remove the locking pin from the lift bracket. 2. Insert the lift handle onto the rod above the lift chain attachment. 3. Carefully lower the bracket with the handle. It will require effort to bring the bracket over center and then to resist the chain tension as the bracket rotates downward. Before lowering, raise the front of the trailer to reduce spring bar chain tension, which makes operation easier and safer. Maintain control of the lift handle at all times.
After raising the lift bracket, the vehicle should settle evenly, within 1/2". Re-measure the front and rear bumper reference points. If the front has settled much more than the rear, increase the number of chain links between the lift bracket and the spring bar. The spring bars should be nearly horizontal when correct height is achieved. When even settling and correct spring bar position have been achieved, mark the spring bar chain at the hooked position with paint for future reference. Ensure at least 5 links remain between the lift bracket and spring bar, and the number of links should be the same on both bars.
Tighten the 3/4" - 10 x 4 1/2" hex bolts (#8) and 3/4" - 10 nylock nuts (#10) to 200 ft. lbs. torque. Failure to tighten these bolts to the correct torque may result in fastener loss or failure.
Tighten the 1/2" head attachment bolts to 75 ft. lbs. torque. Failure to tighten these bolts to the correct torque may result in fastener loss or failure.
Tighten the 5/8" hex head set-screw to 50 ft. lbs. torque. This bolt holds the head tight against the pin in the head channel. Failure to tighten it to the correct torque may result in fastener loss or failure.
Never exceed your vehicle manufacturer's recommended towing capacity. The loaded trailer ball height must never be greater than the uncoupled ball height. If the loaded ball height is greater than the uncoupled height, reduce take-up on the spring bar chains, remeasure and adjust until the proper height is obtained. Front wheel overload and loss of rear wheel traction can result from incorrect ball height, leading to unstable handling, reduced braking ability and a tendency to jackknife when turning and braking at the same time.
Before raising or lowering the lift bracket, raise the front of the trailer to reduce the spring bar chain tension. This will make the lift bracket operation easier and safer. Keep clear of the pivot path of all moving parts when there is tension on the spring bar chain. Maintain control of the lift handle at all times when raising or lowering the spring bar. Be sure that the locking hair pin is in place once the lift bracket is in the up position.
There must be at least 5 links minimum between the lift bracket and the spring bar. If fewer than 5 links remain, the chain and snap-up bracket will bind. The number of links should be the same on both bars. If you need to adjust the number of links, tilt the head down and tighten the two 3/4" bolts to 200 ft. lbs. torque once the head angle is set.
Before towing, check the following: pin and clip securing shank to receiver; head to shank fasteners; trailer ball nut torque; coupler latch; snap-up bracket bolt; safety chains; lights and turn signals; braking system, including breakaway switch. At the beginning of every tow day, check all trailer to towing vehicle connections for security and operation.
Tongue weight should be 10–15% of the gross trailer weight for most trailers. Too low a tongue weight often produces a tendency to sway. Ensure your trailer's actual tongue weight does not exceed the hitch's rated tongue weight capacity (600 lbs for the 17050 with spring bars, or 500–600 lbs depending on spring bar configuration).

Surge brakes require a small amount of fore and aft movement for their actuating mechanism to function correctly. To avoid restricting movement, it may be necessary to increase the number of chain links between the lift brackets and spring bars by tilting the head down. Tighten the two 3/4" bolts to 200 ft. lbs. torque once the head angle is set. Note that surge brake actuators not designed for use with a weight distributing hitch may bind and not operate freely. Keep the socket-mounted ends of the spring bars and the lock pins in the head assembly free from dirt and well lubricated.
