You need to take three measurements on level pavement with the trailer leveled using the tongue jack: (1) distance from pavement to the top of the trailer coupler socket, (2) height from pavement to the front bumper of the tow vehicle, and (3) height from pavement to the rear bumper of the tow vehicle. These measurements determine the target uncoupled ball height for proper hitch adjustment.
Measure the trailer coupler height and the front and rear bumper heights of the tow vehicle on level pavement. The uncoupled ball height should be set higher than the coupler height to allow for vehicle squat when coupled to the trailer. For passenger cars, add 1/8" for each 100 lbs. of tongue weight. Attach each lift chain (8mm x 400mm) to the tapered end of each spring bar using a 3/8" U-bolt, 3/8" washer, and 3/8" nylock nut. Apply heavy fibrous grease to the round end of each spring bar before inserting into the hitch head socket.
Apply heavy fibrous grease to the round end of each spring bar and push the end up into the head socket until you hear a click. This indicates the spring bar is locked into place. To release a spring bar, lift up slightly and gently pull out the retaining pin in the hitch head; the spring bar will drop free. Keep spring bars lubricated during operation using the grease zerk if additional grease is needed.
Position the spring bar parallel with the trailer tongue and hold the lift chain vertical alongside the tongue. Position the lift bracket so the chain is centered between the bracket. Before raising, raise the front of the trailer approximately 3" with the tongue jack to reduce spring bar chain tension. Slip the marked chain link over the hook on the lift bracket, insert the lift handle onto the lift bracket rod above the chain hook, and raise the bracket up and over center until fully seated against the mounting bracket. Secure by inserting the clip through the lift bracket and mounting bracket. Ensure the chain is not twisted and the hook extends through the link.
Remove the locking pin from the lift bracket. Insert the lift handle onto the rod above the chain attachment. Carefully lower the bracket with the handle. It will require effort to bring the bracket over center and then to resist the chain tension as the bracket rotates downward. Before raising or lowering, raise the front of the trailer to reduce spring bar chain tension for easier and safer operation.
There should be at least 5 links minimum between the lift bracket and the spring bar to allow movement when turning. If fewer than 5 links are used, the chain and snap-up bracket will bind. The number of links should be the same on both bars. Adjust head tilt to accomplish the correct chain length. Mark the spring bar chain at the hooked position with paint for future reference.
The number of washers on the pin in the head channel controls head tilt. Place six 1/2" flat washers on the pin and insert into the unthreaded hole in the upper portion of the head channel. After installing the head on the shank, rotate it forward as far as it will go. The ball should be vertical or tilted slightly back. If not, remove the 3/4" bolt, change the number of washers, and re-assemble. The number of washers may need adjustment to achieve correct chain length and head angle.
Tighten the 3/4" - 10 x 4 1/2" hex bolts to 200 ft. lbs. torque. Failure to tighten bolts to this specification may result in fastener loss or failure. These bolts secure the head assembly to the shank.
Tighten the 5/8" hex head set-screw to 50 ft. lbs. torque. Failure to tighten this bolt may result in fastener loss or failure. This bolt secures the head tight against the pin in the head channel.
Tighten the 1/2" head attachment bolts to 75 ft. lbs. torque. Failure to tighten bolts to this specification may result in fastener loss or failure.
After raising the lift bracket, the vehicle should settle evenly within 1/2". Re-measure the front and rear bumper reference points. If the front has settled much more than the rear, increase the number of chain links between the lift bracket and the spring bar. The spring bars should be nearly horizontal when correct height is achieved. Once correct height is achieved, mark the spring bar chain at the hooked position with paint for future reference.
Check the following before towing: (1) pin and clip securing shank to receiver, (2) head to shank fasteners, (3) trailer ball nut torque, (4) coupler latch, (5) snap-up bracket bolt, (6) safety chains, (7) lights and turn signals, (8) braking system including breakaway switch. Ensure all connections are secure and operational.
Keep the socket-mounted ends of the spring bars and lock pins in the head assembly free from dirt and well lubricated. Keep the head assembly exterior clean and do not allow dirt or stones to lodge between the spring bars and the head. Keep hitch parts painted to prevent rust and maintain appearance; do not paint over labels. Keep lift brackets clean and lubricated to ensure ease of operation. Coat clevis pins in the head assembly with fibrous grease and lightly coat the ball with grease.
Check spring bar chains and U-bolts for wear and security at the beginning of every tow day. Replace them if they become worn. Excessive wear in the socket-mounted ends of the spring bars and lock pins may indicate an overload or inadequate lubrication.
The loaded ball height should never be greater than the uncoupled ball height. If it is, front wheel overload and loss of rear wheel traction can result, leading to unstable handling, reduced braking ability, and a tendency to jackknife when turning and braking at the same time. If the loaded trailer ball height is greater than the uncoupled height, reduce take-up on the spring bar chains, remeasure, and adjust until the proper height is obtained.
If the lift chain is angled fore or aft at the top within the lift bracket, it may catch on the bracket when turning. This could damage the lift bracket or pry it open. The chain must be held vertical alongside the trailer tongue and centered between the lift bracket to prevent this hazard.
Keep clear of the pivot path of all moving parts when there is tension on the spring bar chain. Maintain control of the lift handle at all times when raising or lowering the spring bar. Be sure the locking hair pin is in place once the lift bracket is in the up position. Before raising or lowering the lift bracket, raise the front of the trailer to reduce spring bar chain tension for easier and safer operation.
The sway control unit is included with the kit and helps minimize the effects of sudden maneuvers, wind gusts, and buffeting caused by passing vehicles. It is recommended especially for trailers with large surface areas such as travel trailers. The sway control attaches to a sway control ball on the weight distribution hitch and a trailer-mounted attachment ball. It uses a break tension screw that can be adjusted 1/4 turn clockwise if factory preset tension does not provide enough sway control.
Measure 24" straight back from the center of the coupler to the desired side of the trailer frame to determine the location of the attachment ball. The trailer-mounted attachment ball must be centered on the 24" measurement. Transfer punch the holes from the ball mount plate to the trailer frame and drill six 11/32" holes. Attach the trailer-mounted attachment ball to the trailer frame using the six self-tapping screws provided.
Lubricate the threads on the sway control handle with a drop of oil. Attach the socket on the slide bar to the sway control ball on the weight distribution hitch and secure with a spring clip. Turn the On/Off handle three turns counterclockwise to release tension. Place the main body socket onto the trailer-mounted attachment ball and secure with a spring clip. Turn the On/Off handle clockwise and tighten firmly until the handle is parallel with the main body.
No. The sway control cannot be used on trailers with surge brakes. Surge brake actuators not designed for use with a weight distributing hitch may bind and not operate freely. Check your surge brake operating instructions for specific requirements regarding their use with weight distributing hitches. If surge brakes are present, it may be necessary to increase the number of chain links between the lift brackets and spring bars by tilting the head down to allow the small amount of fore and aft movement required for the surge brake actuating mechanism to function correctly.
Do not speed up if sway occurs; sway increases with speed. If sway continues, stop the vehicle and inspect all towing equipment until the cause has been determined and corrected. In slippery conditions such as wet, icy, gravel, or snow-covered roads, the sway control must be removed. Trailers should be loaded with heavy items on the floor in front of the axle, balanced side to side. Tongue weight should be 10-15% of gross trailer weight for most trailers. Insufficient tongue weight or tail-heavy trailers can cause sway.
After a 1,000 mile break-in period, remove the slide bar and clean it using a wire brush or steel wool. The slide bar should then be cleaned every 10,000 miles. Never paint or lubricate the slide bar. Any welding should be done by a qualified welding shop.
