While many weight distribution hitches are made to be compatible with a sway control attachment, the CURT TruTrack is an advanced WD system that integrates the sway control function into the design of the hitch. The CURT 17601 is a weight distributing hitch with spring bars designed to distribute trailer tongue weight across the tow vehicle's axles. It includes a hitch head, adjustable shank, two spring bars, support brackets, and a 2-5/16" hitch ball. The spring bars help level the vehicle and trailer during towing by transferring weight from the rear axle to the front axle, improving stability and braking performance.

Yes, but you must first check your vehicle's owner's manual or other instructions for the air springs or air shocks. Unless otherwise indicated, air springs and air shocks should be deflated to their minimum recommended pressure before assembling and adjusting the weight distributing hitch.
Without spring bars, the maximum gross trailer weight (GTW) is 10,000 lbs. with 800 lbs. tongue weight. With spring bars, GTW is 8,000–10,000 lbs. with 800–1,000 lbs. tongue weight. The tongue weight rating of the spring bars represents the capacity of a pair of bars, not an individual bar. Do not exceed the maximum weight rating of the trailer ball manufacturer.
Spring bars are optional. Without spring bars, the hitch supports a maximum GTW of 10,000 lbs. and 800 lbs. tongue weight, but the weight rating is dependent upon the trailer ball manufacturer's weight ratings. With spring bars, the hitch supports 8,000–10,000 lbs. GTW and 800–1,000 lbs. tongue weight. Always use a pair of spring bars if you choose to use them, and ensure they are rated the same.
You will need a ratchet, socket set, torque wrench, and tape measure. The installation is rated as moderate difficulty and may vary depending on installer expertise, vehicle condition, and availability of proper tools and equipment.
You must measure on level pavement: (1) the height from pavement to the front bumper of the tow vehicle, (2) the height from pavement to the rear bumper of the tow vehicle, and (3) the height from pavement to the top of the trailer coupler socket. The trailer must be leveled using the tongue jack. These measurements are used to determine the target uncoupled ball height and ensure proper weight distribution.
For passenger cars, add 1/8" to the trailer coupler height for each 100 lbs. of tongue weight. This target height accounts for vehicle squat (lowering) that occurs when the trailer is coupled. The uncoupled ball height must be set higher than the coupler height to ensure the loaded ball height does not exceed the uncoupled height, which would cause front wheel overload and loss of rear wheel traction.
Insert the adjustable shank into the receiver tube on the tow vehicle and secure it with the hitch pin and clip. Position the head assembly on the shank by sliding it up or down to the nearest bolt hole alignment position that corresponds with your target ball height. Mark this position on the shank. The shank can be used in upright or inverted position to achieve proper ball height on high ground clearance vehicles, but you must check for adequate ground clearance if inverted.
Torque the hitch ball to 450 ft-lbs. Secure the ball to the head assembly using a lock washer (1-1/4") and hex nut (1-1/4"-12).
After marking the position on the shank, insert the two 3/4"-10 x 5" hex bolts through 3/4" conical washers and through the holes in the head channel. Rotate the head forward as far as it will go; the ball should be vertical or tilted slightly back. If not, adjust set screws. Install a second 3/4" conical washer on both bolts. Start the 3/4"-10 nylock nuts and finger tighten only. In Step 5, tighten the top bolt just enough to hold the head tight against the pin in the head channel; final tightening occurs in Step 15.
Apply heavy grease to the round end of each spring bar. Push the end up into the head socket until you hear a click, which indicates the spring bar is locked into place. To release a spring bar, lift up slightly on the spring bar and gently pull out on the retaining pin in the hitch head; the spring bar will drop free.
Using the trailer tongue jack, lower the coupler onto the trailer ball and close the coupler latch. Do not retract the jack fully; allow it to support some of the tongue weight. Then raise the front of the trailer and back of the tow vehicle approximately 3" with the tongue jack or until the rear bumper returns to its initial measured height. This makes it easier to install the spring bars onto the support brackets.
Mark the position of the support brackets by making a center line on the trailer A-frame a minimum of 4" in from the end of the spring bars. The wide channel bracket should be installed over the narrow channel bracket. Place a carriage bolt through the top hole on all three support brackets, spin the nylock nut loosely onto the bolt, and hang the assembly over the trailer A-frame on the center line. Slide the L-support in between the two captive support brackets in the highest position possible while still allowing clearance under the trailer frame, and install the second carriage bolt in the first hole directly below the trailer A-frame.
With the L-bracket installed, tighten both nylock nuts to 25 lb-ft. After the spring bars are raised and secured, tighten all 3/4" bolts and lock nuts to 200 ft-lbs.
Pull the spring bar out from the A-frame and hook the lift bar into the L-bracket. Pry the spring bar onto the L-bracket by rotating the lift bar to vertical. With the spring bar supported by the L-bracket, remove the lift handle. Secure the spring bar by installing the retainer clip and cotter pin. Keep clear of the pivot path of all moving parts when there is tension on the spring bar, and maintain control of the lift handle at all times.
Check the vehicle height and adjust the angle of the head using set screws (#13, #14) as required until desired loading is reached. With the spring bars secured, lower the jack to apply load to the hitch. The vehicle should settle evenly. Remeasure the front and rear bumper reference points. If the front has settled much more than the rear, adjust the set screws until the vehicle and trailer are level. The spring bars should be nearly horizontal when correct height is achieved.
Tighten set screw (#13) to 50 ft-lbs. Set screw (#14) is adjusted as needed to achieve proper head angle and level vehicle height, but no specific torque is provided for it in the manual.
Hitch ball: 450 ft-lbs. Head fasteners (3/4" bolts and lock nuts): 200 ft-lbs. Set screw (#13): 50 ft-lbs. Spring bar support bracket nylock nuts (initial): 25 lb-ft. Failure to tighten hardware may result in fastener loss or failure.
The loaded ball height should never be greater than the uncoupled ball height. If it is, front wheel overload and loss of rear wheel traction can result, leading to unstable handling, reduced braking ability, and a tendency to jackknife when turning and braking at the same time. If the loaded trailer ball height is greater than the uncoupled height, reduce take-up on the spring bar, remeasure, and adjust until the proper height is obtained.
Before towing, check all of the following connections: hitch pin and clip (securing shank to receiver), head to shank fasteners, trailer ball nut, coupler latch, spring bar support brackets, safety chains, lights and turn signals, and braking system (including breakaway switch).
Keep the socket-mounted ends of the spring bars and the lock pins in the head assembly free from dirt and well lubricated; excessive wear may indicate overload or inadequate lubrication. Keep the head assembly exterior clean and do not allow dirt or stones to lodge between the spring bars and the head. Keep hitch parts painted to prevent rust and maintain appearance, but do not paint over labels. Keep lift brackets clean and lubricated to ensure ease of operation. Perform periodic inspection to ensure all hardware and components remain secure.
Remove the weight from the spring bars by using the trailer jack to lift the front of the trailer and rear of the tow vehicle. With the tension removed, carefully remove the cotter pin and retainer clip. With the spring bar retainer clip removed, use the lift bar as a lever to pry the spring bar off the L-bracket.
