Weight distribution hitches are commonly used on travel trailers and campers but can also be applied to other large loads. These replacement weight distribution hookup brackets make it easy to attach spring bars to the tongue frame of your trailer and get the exact tension needed to level your towing setup. The Curt 17208 Snap Up Bracket Kit is a component designed to mount on a trailer's A-frame and connect to the spring bar chain system. It allows the spring bars to be controlled and positioned during towing operations.
The kit is designed for trailers with an A-frame and spring bar chain system. Compatibility depends on your trailer's frame design and configuration. Consult your trailer manufacturer to confirm fitment before purchasing.
The kit includes snap-up brackets, a 1/2-13 x 4" bolt, a 1/2-13 x 2" bolt (supplied as an alternative for large A-frames), a spring clip, and a handle. Additional 3/8" hardware (self-tapping or nut and bolt) may be required if drilling optional holes is necessary.
A wrench is required to tighten the bolts. If drilling optional holes is necessary, a drill and appropriate drill bits for 3/8" holes are needed. Consult your trailer frame manufacturer before drilling.
Yes. Before operating the snap-up bracket, raise the bumper of your tow vehicle with the trailer tongue jack approximately one inch. This reduces spring bar tension and makes snap-up bracket operation easier.
Position the snap-up brackets on the trailer A-frame with the spring bar chain held vertical. Center the snap-up brackets with the chain. See Figure 7 in the manual for reference.
Turn the 1/2-13 bolt until it contacts the frame, then tighten an additional 1/2 to 3/4 turn with a wrench. Do not over-tighten.
Use the 1/2-13 x 2" bolt if your trailer's A-frame is quite large and the 4" bolt does not fit properly. The 2" bolt is supplied as an alternative for this situation.
If your trailer does not permit the use of 1/2-13 bolts, you may drill optional holes large enough for 3/8" hardware (self-tapping or nut and bolt). However, you must consult your trailer frame manufacturer for approval prior to drilling holes.
1. With the snap-up bracket in raised position, pull straight up firmly on the spring bar chain and note which link is closest to the chain hook. 2. Count down 2 links from that point; that link will be used for hook-up. 3. Lower the snap-up bracket and attach the upper end of the chosen chain link to the snap-up bracket hook, allowing remaining free links to fall down outside the trailer frame. 4. Ensure at least 5 links remain between the snap-up bracket and the spring bar. 5. Use the handle to raise the snap-up bracket. 6. Insert the spring clip on the snap-up bracket. 7. Repeat for the opposite spring bar using the same number of links.
There must be at least 5 links between the snap-up bracket and the spring bar. This is necessary for proper operation of the spring bars during turns. If there will be fewer than 5 links, the angle of the head assembly must be increased by removing the upper bolt, pivoting the head assembly down, and adding an additional washer underneath the pin.
Failure to provide at least 5 links between the snap-up bracket and spring bar can result in damage to the snap-up bracket. The chain and snap-up bracket may bind during operation. If fewer than 5 links are present, the angle of the head assembly must be increased by removing the upper bolt, pivoting the head assembly down, and adding an additional washer underneath the pin before operating the bracket.
Keep clear of all moving parts when raising the snap-up bracket with the handle. Before operating the snap-up bracket, raise the bumper of your tow vehicle with the trailer tongue jack approximately one inch to reduce spring bar tension.
After connecting both spring bar chains using the same number of links for each side, retract the trailer tongue jack so the hitch is now carrying the full trailer weight. This completes the installation and allows normal towing operation.
