The CURT 58267 is designed for Ford trucks equipped with a MultiPro tailgate step/bed extender. The manual does not specify which model years, cab styles, or bed lengths are compatible. Contact CURT Product Support at 877-287-8634 or visit curtmfg.com to confirm fitment for your specific vehicle before purchasing.
The 58267 is an accessory sensor that mounts around the receiver tube on your truck's hitch. It detects when an accessory is inserted into the receiver tube and controls the operation of your MultiPro tailgate. When the sensor door is closed and the receiver tube is empty, your tailgate functions normally. When an accessory is in the receiver tube or the sensor door is open, the tailgate operates as a standard tailgate (the top button will not function, but the bottom button will still work).
You will need: a Torx T-20 bit, a 5/32" Allen wrench, a ratchet, a socket extension, a cutting tool, a trim panel removal tool, and a pry tool. Cable ties are included with the product. The installation is rated as Easy difficulty.
The kit includes: one accessory sensor top half, one accessory sensor bottom half, one wiring harness, two socket head cap screws (5/32"), two flat washers, two nylock nuts, and ten zip ties.
The manual does not specify whether battery disconnection is required. Contact CURT Product Support at 877-287-8634 before beginning installation to confirm whether this step is necessary for your vehicle.
The installation is rated as Easy difficulty based on time and effort involved. However, the manual notes that difficulty may vary depending on installer expertise, vehicle condition, and availability of proper tools. The installation involves disconnecting and reconnecting the factory tailgate latch connector and routing a wiring harness through the tailgate and hinge channel. If you are not comfortable with electrical work or trim removal, professional installation is recommended.
Place the top half of the sensor over the top of the receiver tube and the bottom half around the bottom of the receiver tube so they enclose the tube together. Place a flat washer over each of the two socket head cap screws. Insert the screws through the top half and secure with nylock nuts on the bottom half. Use a 5/32" Allen wrench to tighten. Tighten each side in equal increments to keep the sensor square on the receiver tube.
Open the tailgate by pressing the lower button. Use a Torx T-20 bit to remove the 10 screws in the main part of the tailgate and set them aside. Lift the plastic panel closest to the truck bed, locate the single push fastener in the center, remove it with a trim panel removal tool, and set the panel aside.
Locate the custom T-end wiring harness on the end with a single electrical connector. Route this end into the tailgate at the center, following the factory wiring out the bottom of the tailgate and into the truck bed. Route the harness inside the tailgate to the passenger-side MultiPro gate hinge. Then use a pry tool to remove the push fasteners securing the factory harness to the tailgate, and route the custom wiring harness down inside the channel of the hinge with the factory wiring.
Locate the factory connector for the tailgate latch inside the center of the tailgate. Carefully disconnect it by pushing the red locking tab toward the wires, then push the connector together and press the connector lock and pull the connectors apart. Route the custom wiring harness to the center of the tailgate and connect the harness to the factory connector.
From under the vehicle, route the receiver tube sensor electrical housing to the side of the hitch main body. This allows the harness to be routed between the bumper and the hitch and connected to the connector that was fed out of the tailgate and below the bed of the vehicle in Step 4. Use a cable tie to secure the harness to the vehicle. Ensure the sensor door is in the closed position.
Starting at the T-end or tailgate latch, use cable ties as needed to secure the harness in place. Leave the ties loose initially for proper fitment. Open and close the tailgate's multi-function (close the whole gate if needed) and make sure the harness is not being pinched, especially at the hinge point. Once confirmed, tighten the cable ties and trim as needed. Reinstall the removed panels in reverse order of removal.
Before tightening the cable ties, open and close the tailgate's multi-function (close the whole gate if needed) to ensure the harness is not being pinched, especially at the hinge point between the multi-function. Only after confirming the harness moves freely should you tighten the cable ties and trim as needed.
Your tailgate will only function normally when the sensor door is in the closed position and nothing is in the receiver tube. If the sensor door is open or an accessory is in the receiver tube, the tailgate will operate as a standard tailgate: the top button will not function, but the bottom button will still work as intended.
When the hitch cover is flipped open to accept an accessory, the inner tailgate panel will not operate. When the hitch cover is closed, the inner tailgate panel will operate normally. In either position, the truck's taillights will flash when the button on the truck or key fob is pushed.
Once installed, test for proper function by using a test light or connecting a properly wired trailer. The manual also requires that you open and close the tailgate's multi-function during installation to ensure the harness is not pinched.
Periodic inspection of all wires and connections should be performed to ensure there is no visible damage or loose connections.
The manual does not specify the product rating. However, it warns: do not exceed the product rating or tow vehicle lamp load rating, whichever is lower. Contact CURT Product Support at 877-287-8634 or visit curtmfg.com for the specific rating.

No drilling is required. Installation involves removing factory fasteners, routing a wiring harness, and securing it with cable ties.
No. You open the tailgate and remove interior panels and fasteners, but the tailgate itself does not need to be removed from the vehicle.
Only when the sensor door is closed and nothing is in the receiver tube. If the door is open or an accessory is inserted, the top tailgate button will not function.
