The running boards mount with vehicle-specific brackets and use pre-existing mounting points to avoid difficult modifications. Follow this sequence: 1) Cut the board to desired length if needed and paint the cut ends. 2) Slide the appropriate number of support braces (part 551296) into the channel of the step board (part 551388). 3) Slide the end cap (part 551394) over the front and rear of each step. 4) Using the supplied #8 x 1/2" self-drilling tek screw (part 107958), screw the end cap to the bottom of the step.
1) Set the step on the mounting brackets and slide each support brace over the top of each mounting bracket. 2) Attach the flat spacer plate (part 551298) to the bottom of the step, between the support brace and the top of the mounting bracket. 3) Using the supplied 5/16-18 x 1" carriage bolt (part 108683), washer (part 101369), and flange nut (part 102680), attach the step assembly, flat spacer plate, and mounting bracket together. 4) Set the step plate in the correct position and tighten all fasteners to 19 LB FT.
All fasteners for the Model 415114 Grip Step assembly must be torqued to 19 LB FT.
To cut the step board, you will need a saber saw, chop saw, or hack saw. For assembly and attachment, you will need a wrench or socket set to tighten the 5/16-18 fasteners to 19 LB FT. A screwdriver is needed to install the #8 x 1/2" self-drilling tek screws into the end caps. Flat black paint is required to touch up cut ends.
Yes. 2009 to 2012 Dodge Ram 1500 trucks do not have obround holes in the pinch weld and will require drilling. You must drill two 5/16" holes for each bracket. To locate the drilling points, follow the bracket positioning steps (2.5 and 2.7-2.8), then mark the pinch weld for drilling while the bracket is in place.
The Model 400938 bracket kit is designed to work on both types of trucks. For trucks with threaded inserts in the rocker panel, use the M8 x 25mm screws (part 19) with 5/16" flat washers (part 20) through the slots on the upper mounting flange. For trucks without threaded inserts, install the T-bolt weldment (part 22) into the large obround hole in the rocker panel, then attach the M8 x 25mm screw through the slotted hole in the upper mounting flange.
1) Attach the mounting brackets to the vehicle pinch weld using 1/4-20 x 1" carriage bolts, washers, and flange nuts (leave finger tight). 2) For trucks without threaded inserts, install T-bolt weldments in the rocker panel obround holes and attach the plastic bolt retainer. 3) Attach the inboard mounting brackets to the frame using 1/2-13 x 1.00" hex screws, washers, and serrated flange nuts (leave loose). 4) Attach the W2W support bracket to the inboard bracket and frame using 3/8-16 x 1" hex screws and 1/2-13 x 1" hex screws (leave loose). 5) Install the W2W outboard mounting bracket using 5/16-18 x 1" hex screws (leave loose). 6) Install the step plates and adjust all brackets before final tightening.
1) On the vertical wall of the rocker panel, install the T-bolt weldment (part 22) into the large obround hole, inserting the nut end first. Be careful not to drop the T-bolt inside the rocker panel. 2) Attach the flat plastic bolt retainer (part 23) to the threaded stud of the T-bolt to keep it from falling into the rocker panel. 3) Place a flat washer (part 20) and M8 flange nut (part 21) on the threaded stud. 4) Rotate the T-bolt so the threaded nut is visible through the slotted hole in the upper mounting flange. 5) Insert an M8 x 25mm screw (part 19) with a 5/16" flat washer (part 20) through the slot.
No. The left and right mounting brackets are different. For the driver's side, use item #1 (part 553092) for the front bracket and item #2 (part 553093) for the middle and rear brackets. For the passenger side, the installation is a mirror image: use item #2 for the front bracket and item #1 for the middle and rear brackets. Additionally, the inboard W2W brackets (items #3 and #4) are not the same from left to right.
No. During installation, leave all fasteners finger tight until all brackets and step plates are installed and adjusted. Only after the step plates are installed and all brackets are properly positioned should you tighten all fasteners to their final torque specifications.

If the T-bolt is dropped, contact the manufacturer or a qualified technician for guidance on rocker panel access and retrieval.
