The manual also references separate installation instructions included with the step assembly itself, which you should review for specific details on attaching the step assembly.
Attach the top of the mounting brackets (item #1) to the vehicle as shown in the manual. First, insert a 5/16" multi-thread U-nut (item #7) into the upper holes in the rocker panel. Note: some vehicles have threaded inserts in the rocker panels and do not require U-nuts. Then attach the top of the brackets using either a 5/16"-18 × 1.0" screw and flat washer (items #5 and #4) if your vehicle does not have threaded inserts, or a black M8 × 30 mm screw (item #3) if it does. Hand tighten only at this stage.
Insert a nylon washer (item #2) between the top of the mounting bracket and the bottom of the rocker panel. Install the black M8-1.25 screw (item #3) and washer (item #4). Place the pinch weld support bracket (item #8) above the pinch weld. Install the M8 flange nut (item #6). Repeat this process on each mounting bracket. Tighten all fasteners to 19 lb-ft.
Loosen the spring hanger bolt just enough to slide the inboard spring hanger mounting bracket (item #14) up behind the flange of the bolt. Position it with the channel open to the outboard side. Install the outboard spring hanger mounting bracket (item #13) so its inboard vertical portion fits inside the channel of the inboard bracket. Use a 3/8" zinc-plated bolt (item #11), 3/8" washer (item #12), 1/2" washer (item #9), and 3/8" zinc-plated nylock nut (item #10). Do not tighten these bolts until the bracket is attached to the step assembly.
Tighten all rocker panel fasteners (the M8-1.25 screws, washers, and M8 flange nuts) to 19 lb-ft.
Do not tighten the spring hanger mounting bracket bolts (the 3/8" bolts connecting the inboard and outboard brackets) until the bracket is attached to the step assembly. After the step assembly is installed, tighten the spring hanger bolt per the manufacturer's specifications.

Yes. Some vehicles have threaded inserts in the rocker panels and do not require the installation of U-nuts. If your vehicle has threaded inserts, you will use a black M8 × 30 mm screw (item #3) in place of the 5/16"-18 × 1.0" screw (item #5) for the upper rocker panel attachment.
