These van steps offer a custom fit for certain years and styles of the Chevy Express 1500, 2500 or 3500 and GMC Savana 1500, 2500 or 3500 (see application info to verify fitment with your cargo van). They come with a shorter driver-side step and longer passenger-side step for the sliding door. They also come with powder-coated steel brackets and stainless steel hardware for a complete install. Grip Step running boards for vans are optimized for delivery trucks, construction vehicles and other commercial vans. They feature a 7" width, covered with expanded metal treads to grip the bottom of your boots for safe entry and exit every time. The metal treads are also highly resistant to wear, and they help keep the steps clean with their open, through-hole design. The Curt 400344 GRIP STEPS are designed for 2003 and newer Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana vans with a 135" wheelbase. Confirm your van's model year and wheelbase before purchasing. The installation instructions include specific notes for 1500, 2500, and 3500 van models, so verify your van's series as well.
The kit includes mounting brackets (front, center, and rear), grip step boards (36" and 98" options), fasteners (hex bolts, U-nuts, serrated flange nuts, flat washers, rubber washers, and cap plugs), a support brace, and a spacer washer. The step boards are attached to the mounting brackets using a separate instruction sheet included with the boards. All factory body mounting bolts, steel washers, and rubber cushions are reused.
The manual specifies a 3/8" drill bit for drilling the hole in the step board where the support brace attaches. Standard wrenches or sockets are needed to install and tighten the bolts and nuts. The load reaction bolt assembly transfers the step load to the vehicle frame. It consists of a hex bolt, two serrated flange nuts, a flat washer, and a rubber washer. The rubber washer must be snug against the frame before the outside flange nut is tightened. Two load reaction bolt assemblies are installed: one using a 3/8"-16 X 5" bolt (items 8, 10, 13, 15) and one using a 3/8"-16 X 1-3/4" bolt (items 9, 10).
The step end of each mounting bracket must be perpendicular to the outside body of the vehicle. This ensures proper alignment and function of the steps.
The multi-thread U-nut (item 11) installs in either the top hole or bottom hole of the mounting bracket, depending on van model. For 1500 vans, install the U-nut in the top hole. For 2500 and 3500 vans, install the U-nut in the bottom hole. This applies to all four mounting brackets (items 3, 4, 5, 6).
The cap plug (item 14, .364 X .625, vinyl, black) is installed onto the end of the U-nut on the second mounting brackets (items 6 and 5). Two cap plugs are included in the kit.
After the boards are attached to the brackets, hold the support brace up to the board and mark where it meets the board. Drill a 3/8" hole at that location. Install a 5/16"-18 X .875" bolt (item 18), 5/16" flat washer (item 19), and 5/16"-18 nut (item 20) through the hole to secure the support brace to the board.
After installing the first and second mounting brackets on each side, measure from the bottom of the body flange down to the bottom of the mounting brackets to ensure they are at the same height. When installing the third (rear) bracket, adjust it to match this dimension before tightening the bolts.
The rear mounting bracket (item 7) is installed on the front spring shackle bolt. Remove the factory nut and washer from the spring shackle bolt and save the nut for reuse. Install the black spacer washer (item 16), mounting bracket (item 7), 5/8" flat washer (item 12), and the factory nut onto the spring shackle bolt. Adjust the height to match the other mounting brackets and tighten to 65 LB. FT.
Yes. The manual states: "Please refer to the instruction sheet included with your GRIP STEP BOARDS to mount the steps to the mounting brackets." The step board attachment instructions are provided separately and are not included in this mounting bracket installation manual.
