Reese has designed towing equipment since 1952 and remains a benchmark for heavy-duty towing. The line covers fifth wheel hitches such as the modular M5, gooseneck couplers including the Goose Box, air-ride and short-bed pin boxes, weight distribution systems with active sway control, and the accessories that connect them, all built to exceed published industry standards.
Reese has been pioneering towing performance since 1952, when Margaret Reese asked her husband TJ to stop travel trailers rocking every time somebody walked through them. His answer, the first pair of stabilising jacks, was simple and effective enough to change the RV industry. From that starting point Reese grew into a designer and manufacturer of complete towing systems, and today it anchors the heavy-duty end of the Horizon Global towing portfolio.
Fifth wheel towing is where the brand's engineering is most visible. The M5 fifth wheel hitch uses a modular design that breaks into manageable sections for assembly, with a wider stance, tighter tolerances and a shock absorption system aimed at the jolts that travel up through a truck bed. For owners who would rather tow from a gooseneck coupler and keep the bed clear, the Goose Box 20K replaces the trailer's king pin with a gooseneck connection carrying its own air-ride cushioning.
Pin boxes are a Reese speciality. The 5th Airborne uses air-ride technology to dampen road shock and reduce the chucking motion that makes fifth wheel towing tiring, while the Sidewinder was designed for short-bed pickups, pivoting the connection point so the trailer can turn sharply without the front cap meeting the cab.
For conventional towing, Reese weight distribution systems restore load to the tow vehicle's front axle and control sway. The Pro Round Bar distributes weight evenly while damping sway, and the Pro Dual Cam II uses active cam-based sway control that works harder the stronger the sway force becomes. Complete kits pair bars, head and shank to a rated tongue weight, and dedicated sway control kits can be added to existing setups. Pull wires (item 12) are used to route fasteners through the truck frame to the mounting brackets. For the rear mounting hole, you insert the coiled end of the pull wire through the 1-1/2" diameter mounting hole on the frame side, attach a carriage bolt and block to it, push the hardware up into the frame through the large oval access hole, then use the other end of the pull wire to thread through the block and frame bracket. You gently pull on the pull wire to move the hardware into position in the frame bracket, then install the conical washer and nut.
Both use pull wires, but the rear mounting hole uses a 0.50" × 1.5" × 2" block (item 4), while the front mounting hole uses a circle block (item 11). For the front mounting hole, the square hole in the circle block must sit at the bottom of the mounting hole on the frame, and the circle block should fit inside the embossment in the truck frame. Both procedures end with installing a 1/2" conical washer and 1/2" nut and hand-tightening.
Install the 1/2" × 2" carriage bolts with U-shaped spacers (x2) positioned in the corrugation between the truck bed and the mounting rail, or between the bed and frame bracket. The 1/2"-13 × 2" hex head bolts may be used instead of carriage bolts on the outer rail attachment if carriage bolts are difficult to install. Each U-shaped spacer must have a 2" × 2" galvanic isolator square (item 10) placed on the side making contact with the truck bed. Attach washers and hex nuts on the bottom side of the frame bracket and tighten snug to keep the mounting rail from moving.
Place the unassembled fifth wheel legs/slider/goose into the already installed first mounting rail. Position the second mounting rail by inserting its tabs into the first rail and pushing it tight toward the first rail. Ensure the second rail is centered between the weld seams on the truck box floor. If more than one hitch product will be used with the rails, install both at the same time to align the second rail and ensure one product does not compromise the fit of the other.

The manual states: "It is important that the square hole in the circle block (11) sits at the bottom of the mounting hole on the frame as shown in Figure 1. The circle block (11) should fit inside embossment in truck frame." Verify that the square hole is positioned at the bottom of the mounting hole and that the block is fully inserted into the embossment. If it still does not fit, check that you are using the correct circle block (item 11) and not another block type.
The manual warns: "Contact between any steel components (frame mounting brackets, U-shaped spacers, mounting rails, etc.) and aluminum bed may cause corrosion." This occurs when galvanic isolators are missing or improperly installed. Ensure galvanic isolator strips (item 9) are on the bottom surface of each rail and galvanic isolator squares (item 10) are on U-shaped spacers and frame bracket mounting holes where they contact the bed. Repaint any areas where holes were drilled through the bed.
The manual requires that U-shaped spacers be tightened snug in Step 9 "to keep the mounting rail from moving." If the rail is still moving after installation, verify that all fasteners are properly tightened snug and then torqued to 75 ft-lbs in Step 11. Check that all U-shaped spacers are in place in the corrugations between the bed and rail, and that all washers and nuts are secure on the bottom side of the frame brackets.
