Want to take the family on a cross-country adventure? Or perhaps you're planning a shorter trip to your favorite campground. Whatever your destination, it's important to have the right equipment, especially when towing a fifth wheel trailer. To ensure proper hookup and safety while towing, you'll need something to attach your fifth wheel hitch in the bed on your truck. Many pickups come equipped with factory-installed rails or puck systems, but if you don't have one of these already installed, don't worry. REESE has an extensive line of mounting rails and bracket kits, custom-made to the exact specifications needed based on your truck's year, make, and model. REESE also offers several Industry Standard designs, as well as fastener kits, spacer kits, and a Power Puck mounting kit, so you can be sure you're covered, no matter what pickup you're using to tow. So make it easy. Make it fun. Make it REESE, so you can make the journey as enjoyable as the destination.

Reese has designed towing equipment since 1952 and remains a benchmark for heavy-duty towing. The line covers fifth wheel hitches such as the modular M5, gooseneck couplers including the Goose Box, air-ride and short-bed pin boxes, weight distribution systems with active sway control, and the accessories that connect them, all built to exceed published industry standards.
Reese has been pioneering towing performance since 1952, when Margaret Reese asked her husband TJ to stop travel trailers rocking every time somebody walked through them. His answer, the first pair of stabilising jacks, was simple and effective enough to change the RV industry. From that starting point Reese grew into a designer and manufacturer of complete towing systems, and today it anchors the heavy-duty end of the Horizon Global towing portfolio.
Fifth wheel towing is where the brand's engineering is most visible. The M5 fifth wheel hitch uses a modular design that breaks into manageable sections for assembly, with a wider stance, tighter tolerances and a shock absorption system aimed at the jolts that travel up through a truck bed. For owners who would rather tow from a gooseneck coupler and keep the bed clear, the Goose Box 20K replaces the trailer's king pin with a gooseneck connection carrying its own air-ride cushioning.
Pin boxes are a Reese speciality. The 5th Airborne uses air-ride technology to dampen road shock and reduce the chucking motion that makes fifth wheel towing tiring, while the Sidewinder was designed for short-bed pickups, pivoting the connection point so the trailer can turn sharply without the front cap meeting the cab.
For conventional towing, Reese weight distribution systems restore load to the tow vehicle's front axle and control sway. The Pro Round Bar distributes weight evenly while damping sway, and the Pro Dual Cam II uses active cam-based sway control that works harder the stronger the sway force becomes. Complete kits pair bars, head and shank to a rated tongue weight, and dedicated sway control kits can be added to existing setups. The products suit RV owners, horse and livestock haulers and anyone towing near the upper end of a vehicle's rating.

The REESE® Custom Quick Install Mounting Kit 56023 is a 10-bolt mounting system designed exclusively for use with the 30153 REESE® Rails on GMC and Chevy 2500/3500 pickup trucks. It provides the frame brackets and hardware needed to securely mount the rails to the truck bed and frame. The kit accommodates three different truck frame configurations: frames without helper spring brackets, frames with helper spring brackets, and frames without helper spring brackets but with threaded inserts inside.
The REESE® 56023 kit is designed for GMC and Chevy 2500/3500 pickup trucks, but not all model years and configurations are supported. The manual directs you to visit www.ReeseProducts.com before installation to verify that your specific truck year and model are compatible and that you have the most recent revision of the installation instructions.
No. The manual explicitly states: "Do not install this product on or attempt to tow with a truck with a 5-1/2' bed unless a sidewinder pin box coupler has been installed on the trailer." If your truck has a 5-1/2' bed, you must have a sidewinder pin box coupler on the trailer before installing this kit.
No. The manual states: "Do not install mounting rails over plastic bed liners. Plastic bed liners must be cut out of the way to provide metal to metal contact." However, the rails may be installed on spray-in bed liners. If you have a plastic bed liner, it must be removed or cut out in the mounting areas before installation.
You will need the following tools: wrenches in 3/4", 13mm, and 18mm sizes; drill bits in 1/8" and 9/16" sizes; a center punch; a measuring tape; and a torque wrench. The fastener kit 56023F is also required and must be purchased separately if not included.
The 56023 kit includes: 4 driver and passenger side front and rear frame brackets; 2 inside frame front and rear mounting blocks; 8 carriage bolts (1/2"-13x1.75"); 8 blocks (1/4"x1"x3"); 10 conical washers (1/2"); 10 nuts (1/2"-13); 4 carriage bolts (1/2"-13x5.5"); 4 carriage bolts (1/2"-13x4.5"); 4 tube spacers (1/2"x3.5"); 4 tube spacers (1/2"x2.5"); 8 pull wires (1/2"); 8 U-shaped blocks (1/4"x1"x2"); and 8 blocks (1/4"x1"x2"). Additional hardware is supplied with the 30153 rail kit. Note: trucks with threaded inserts (configuration 3) require additional GM bolts p/n 11589278 or equivalent M12X1.75X 70-75mm Gr. 10.9 bolts, which are not included.
It depends on your truck's frame configuration. If your truck frame has threaded inserts inside (configuration 3), you will need to purchase four additional GM bolts p/n 11589278 from a local GM dealer, or equivalent flanged hex M12X1.75X (70-75 mm length) Grade 10.9 bolts. If you use Grade 10.9 hex bolts instead of flanged bolts, you will also need M12 or 1/2" conical washers or flat washer plus lock washer. Trucks without threaded inserts do not require additional bolts beyond what is supplied in the kit.
The manual does not mention disconnecting the battery. However, the installation involves removing wire harness retainers from the frame on the driver side rear. If you are uncomfortable working near electrical components, consult a professional installer.
Configuration 1: Truck frame without helper spring brackets. Configuration 2: Truck frame with helper spring brackets. Configuration 3: Truck frame without helper spring brackets but with threaded inserts inside the frame in the area of the front holes for forward brackets. Configurations 2 and 3 require additional installation steps detailed on page 9. Configuration 3 also requires additional bolts (GM p/n 11589278 or equivalent) that are not included in the kit.
The correct distance depends on your truck bed length. For a standard 6-foot bed, the distance is approximately 27-3/4 inches from the rear of the rail to the back edge of the truck bed. For a long 8-foot bed, the distance is approximately 30-11/16 inches. These dimensions are shown in Figure 3 of the manual and must be measured carefully before drilling holes.
Yes. The manual instructs you to place the front mounting rail in the bed, center it, and mark the hole locations with a center punch. Then you must move the rail out of the way before drilling the 1/8" pilot holes. After drilling, you check alignment with the frame brackets, and if correct, you enlarge the holes to 9/16" for the 1/2" carriage bolts. The same process is repeated for the rear mounting rail.
If the holes do not align, you must restart the installation at step 2 by adjusting the 1/8" holes in the truck bed. The manual emphasizes checking alignment before enlarging the holes to 9/16". Do not enlarge misaligned holes.
Installation of the driver side front bracket (item 1) involves four sub-steps: (A) Using two 1/2" fishwires provided, install two 1/2" x 1.75" carriage bolts (item 7) and 1"x3" blocks (item 8) through the slot on the inside of the frame (the inside frame holes on the driver side are blocked by the fuel tank and are not accessible). Run the fishwire in from the slot and out through the bolt holes. Place the conical washer (item 9) on the carriage bolt and secure with a nut (item 10). (B) Position the front mounting block (item 5) against the inside of the frame. The brake line bracket will be in the way, so loosen the two brake line support bracket bolts (M8) to create space. Align the mounting block slots with the frame bracket holes. Install two 1/2" x 5.5" carriage bolts (item 11) from inside the frame through the mounting block, 1/2"x3.5" tube spacer (item 13), and frame bracket. Place the conical washer on the carriage bolt and secure with the nut. Fasten the brake line bracket bolts.
Installation of the passenger side front bracket (item 3) involves four sub-steps: (C) Using two 1/2" fishwires provided, install two 1/2" x 1.75" carriage bolts (item 7) and 1"x3" blocks (item 8) using the larger top hole on the inside of the frame. Run the fishwire from this hole and out through the carriage bolt holes. Place the conical washer (item 9) and secure with the nut (item 10). (D) Position the front mounting block (item 5) against the inside of the frame, aligning slots with frame bracket holes. Install two 1/2" x 5.5" carriage bolts (item 11) from inside the frame through the mounting block, 1/2"x3.5" tube spacer (item 13), and frame bracket. Place the conical washer on the carriage bolt and secure with the nut.
Installation of the driver side rear bracket (item 2) involves four sub-steps: (A) Using two 1/2" fishwires provided, install two 1/2" x 1.75" carriage bolts (item 7) and 1"x3" blocks (item 8) using the larger top hole on the inside of the frame. Run the fishwire from this hole and out through the bolt holes. Place the conical washer (item 9) on the carriage bolt and secure with nut (item 10). (B) Position the rear mounting block (item 6) against the inside of the frame. The wire harness will be in the way, so remove the wire harness retainers (tree style) from the frame. Install two 1/2" x 4.5" carriage bolts (item 12) from inside the frame through the rear mounting block, 1/2"x2.5" tube spacer (item 14), and frame bracket. Place the conical washer on the carriage bolt and secure with the nut.
Installation of the passenger side rear bracket (item 4) involves four sub-steps: (C) Using two 1/2" fishwires provided, install two 1/2" x 1.75" carriage bolts (item 7) and 1"x3" blocks (item 8) using the larger top hole on the inside of the frame. Run the fishwire from this hole and out through the carriage bolt hole. Place the conical washer and secure with the nut. (D) Position the rear mounting block (item 6) against the inside of the frame, aligning slots with frame bracket holes. Install two 1/2" x 4.5" carriage bolts (item 12) from inside the frame through the mounting block, 1/2"x2.5" tube spacer (item 14), and frame bracket. Place the conical washer on the carriage bolt and secure with the nut.
Two types of spacers are used to overcome truck bed corrugation and ensure proper contact between the mounting rails and the bed. A 5/16" U-shaped spacer (supplied with the 30153 kit) and a 1/4" U-shaped spacer (supplied with the 56023 kit) are overlapped as shown in the manual. The combined thickness of 5/16" + 1/4" is slightly greater than the bed corrugation height, which means the rails may not sit perfectly flat on the corrugation, but this is allowable. Additionally, 1/2"x3.5" tube spacers (item 13) and 1/2"x2.5" tube spacers (item 14) are used between the mounting blocks and frame brackets.
No. The manual instructs you to hand tighten fasteners as you install them (steps 3, 5, 6, 8). All fasteners are tightened to final torque specifications only after both the front and rear mounting rails are fully installed and positioned. Step 12 states: "Tighten first REESE bed rails to mounting brackets and then mounting brackets to truck frame."
The rear mounting rail must be positioned by inserting its tabs into the already-installed front mounting rail and pushing the rear rail tight towards the front rail. The rear rail must be centered on the truck bed. The manual notes that if more than one hitch product will be used with the mounting rails, both types should be used at the same time to align the mounting rails and ensure that one product does not compromise the fit of the other.
If your truck has helper spring brackets (configuration 2), you must follow additional instructions on page 9. For the front brackets: remove the front helper spring brackets by removing the M12 bolts, follow the standard installation steps 3-6, but after positioning the front frame bracket, place the helper spring bracket back on top of it and re-install the factory M12 bolts (with a 1"x2" spacer block for the front bolt) to secure from the outside. For the rear brackets: remove the rear helper spring brackets by removing the M12 bolts, fish the carriage bolts and blocks first from inside at 4 places, place two 1"x2" spacer blocks on the rear two bolts, then place the frame brackets followed by the helper spring bracket (passing through the carriage bolts), place the conical washer and secure with the nut or re-install the factory M12 bolts (with a 1"x2" spacer block for the rear bolts).
If your truck frame has no helper spring brackets but has threaded inserts inside the frame in the area of the front holes (configuration 3), you must follow the additional instructions on page 9. You will need to purchase four GM bolts p/n 11589278 or equivalent flanged hex M12X1.75X (70-75 mm length) Grade 10.9 bolts. If using Grade 10.9 hex bolts instead of flanged bolts, you will also need M12 or 1/2" conical washers or flat washer plus lock washer. Follow the same procedure as for trucks with helper spring brackets, but use the M12 bolts to secure the brackets instead of the factory bolts. Caution: the fuel tank is close to the inside of the truck frame, so pay close attention while tightening.
Yes. Drilling is required. You must drill 1/8" pilot holes in the truck bed at marked locations for both the front and rear mounting rails. After checking alignment with the frame brackets, you enlarge these holes to 9/16" to accommodate the 1/2" carriage bolts. The manual cautions: "When drilling holes through the bed be sure what is below the truck bed in those locations."
Yes, if you have a plastic bed liner. The manual states: "Do not install mounting rails over plastic bed liners. Plastic bed liners must be cut out of the way to provide metal to metal contact." You must remove or cut out the plastic liner in the mounting areas. However, spray-in bed liners are permitted and do not need to be removed.
Yes. On the driver side front, you must loosen the two brake line support bracket bolts (M8) to create space for the front mounting block to pass through. On the driver side rear, you must remove the wire harness retainers (tree style) from the frame. These components are loosened or removed temporarily to allow access for installing the mounting blocks and fasteners, and the brake line bracket bolts are re-fastened after installation.
All 1/2" Grade 8 hardware must be torqued to 110 ft-lbs (149 N·m). If your truck requires M12 Grade 10.9 bolts (configuration 3 with threaded inserts), those must be torqued to 90 ft-lbs (122 N·m). The manual specifies: "Tighten first REESE bed rails to mounting brackets and then mounting brackets to truck frame."
The maximum trailer weight (GTW) is 27,000 lbs (12,247 kg) and the maximum tongue weight (TW) is 5,400 lbs (2,550 kg). However, the manual cautions: "Under no circumstances do we recommend exceeding the lower of towing vehicle manufacturers recommended vehicle towing capacity, or the lowest rated component of your system." You must not exceed your truck manufacturer's recommended towing capacity, whichever is lower.
The kit includes three sizes of carriage bolts, all 1/2"-13 Grade 8: (1) 1/2"-13x1.75" (item 7, qty 8); (2) 1/2"-13x5.5" (item 11, qty 4); and (3) 1/2"-13x4.5" (item 12, qty 4). The 1.75" bolts are used with the outside frame blocks, the 5.5" bolts are used with the front mounting blocks, and the 4.5" bolts are used with the rear mounting blocks.
Two sizes of tube spacers are used: (1) 1/2"x3.5" tube spacers (item 13, qty 4) are installed between the front mounting blocks and frame brackets; and (2) 1/2"x2.5" tube spacers (item 14, qty 4) are installed between the rear mounting blocks and frame brackets.
The manual states: "FAILURE TO FOLLOW INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS MAY CAUSE PROPERTY LOSS, SERIOUS INJURY, OR DEATH!" This warning appears multiple times in the manual. Additionally, you must not exceed the maximum towing capacity of 27,000 lbs GTW and 5,400 lbs TW, or the lower of your vehicle manufacturer's recommended capacity. Always measure your truck and trailer before installing the hitch to ensure clearance at the cab and bumper for turns.
Before installation, you should: (1) Visit www.ReeseProducts.com to verify that your truck year and model are compatible and to ensure you have the most recent revision of the installation instructions; (2) Measure your truck and trailer to ensure there is clearance at the cab and bumper to allow for turns; (3) Determine your truck's frame configuration (with or without helper spring brackets, or with threaded inserts); and (4) If your truck has a 5-1/2' bed, confirm that a sidewinder pin box coupler is installed on the trailer.
The manual cautions: "When drilling holes through the bed be sure what is below the truck bed in those locations." Before drilling, check what is underneath the truck bed (fuel tank, brake lines, wiring, etc.) to avoid damaging components. This is especially important on the driver side, where the fuel tank is located.
After installation, you should verify that: (1) All fasteners are torqued to the correct specifications (110 ft-lbs for 1/2" Grade 8 hardware, 90 ft-lbs for M12 Grade 10.9 bolts); (2) The mounting rails are centered on the truck bed; (3) The rails fit snugly to the truck; (4) All brake line and wire harness components are properly re-secured; and (5) There is adequate clearance at the cab and bumper for turns when towing.
The 30153 REESE® Rails manual (included in the PDF) states: "Check mounting system bolt tightness once per year." You should inspect all fasteners annually to ensure they remain tight and have not loosened due to vibration or use.
The primary maintenance requirement is to check the mounting system bolt tightness once per year. The manual does not specify other maintenance tasks. If you notice any loose fasteners, damaged components, or signs of wear, contact the manufacturer at 1-800-632-3290 or visit www.ReeseProducts.com for support.
The REESE® 56023 is designed for GMC and Chevy 2500/3500 pickups, but not all model years are supported. Visit www.ReeseProducts.com before purchasing to verify your specific truck year and model are compatible.
You need fastener kit 56023F. The kit includes all bolts, nuts, washers, and spacers required for standard frame configurations. If your truck has threaded inserts (configuration 3), you must also purchase four GM bolts p/n 11589278 or equivalent M12X1.75X Grade 10.9 bolts from a GM dealer.
Yes. You must drill 1/8" pilot holes in the truck bed, then enlarge them to 9/16" for the mounting bolts. You must also remove or cut out any plastic bed liner in the mounting areas (spray-in liners are permitted).
Only if a sidewinder pin box coupler is installed on the trailer. Otherwise, do not install this kit on trucks with 5-1/2' beds.
Check mounting system bolt tightness once per year to ensure fasteners have not loosened due to vibration or use.
Stop the installation and do not enlarge the misaligned holes. Restart the installation at step 2 by adjusting the 1/8" holes in the truck bed. Re-mark and re-drill the holes in the correct locations to align with the frame bracket holes. Once the holes align, you may enlarge them to 9/16" for the 1/2" carriage bolts.
The brake line support bracket is in the way. Loosen the two M8 brake line support bracket bolts as shown in Figure 5 to create enough space for the mounting block to pass through and align with the frame bracket holes. After the mounting block and fasteners are installed, re-fasten the brake line bracket bolts.
The wire harness retainers (tree style) are in the way. Remove the wire harness retainers from the frame using an appropriate tool as shown in Figure 6. This creates access to the hole behind the harness, which is used for fishing the fasteners. The harness retainers can be removed temporarily during installation.
The inside frame holes on the driver side are blocked by the fuel tank and are not directly accessible. Instead, use the fishwire technique: run two 1/2" fishwires in from the slot on the outside of the frame and out through the bolt holes. Use the fishwires to guide the carriage bolts (item 7) and blocks (item 8) into position. Keep both fishwires on the bolt until the bracket is installed.
No, this is allowable. The combined thickness of the spacers (5/16" + 1/4" = 9/16") is slightly greater than the truck bed corrugation height. This means the rails may not sit perfectly flat on the corrugation, but the overlapped spacers overcome the bed corrugation transitions and provide better contact. This is normal and acceptable.
