Want to take the family on a cross-country adventure? Or perhaps you're planning a shorter trip to your favorite campground. Whatever your destination, it's important to have the right equipment, especially when towing a fifth wheel trailer. To ensure proper hookup and safety while towing, you'll need something to attach your fifth wheel hitch in the bed on your truck. Many pickups come equipped with factory-installed rails or puck systems, but if you don't have one of these already installed, don't worry. REESE has an extensive line of mounting rails and bracket kits, custom-made to the exact specifications needed based on your truck's year, make, and model. REESE also offers several Industry Standard designs, as well as fastener kits, spacer kits, and a Power Puck mounting kit, so you can be sure you're covered, no matter what pickup you're using to tow. So make it easy. Make it fun. Make it REESE, so you can make the journey as enjoyable as the destination.

Reese has designed towing equipment since 1952 and remains a benchmark for heavy-duty towing. The line covers fifth wheel hitches such as the modular M5, gooseneck couplers including the Goose Box, air-ride and short-bed pin boxes, weight distribution systems with active sway control, and the accessories that connect them, all built to exceed published industry standards.
Reese has been pioneering towing performance since 1952, when Margaret Reese asked her husband TJ to stop travel trailers rocking every time somebody walked through them. His answer, the first pair of stabilising jacks, was simple and effective enough to change the RV industry. From that starting point Reese grew into a designer and manufacturer of complete towing systems, and today it anchors the heavy-duty end of the Horizon Global towing portfolio.
Fifth wheel towing is where the brand's engineering is most visible. The M5 fifth wheel hitch uses a modular design that breaks into manageable sections for assembly, with a wider stance, tighter tolerances and a shock absorption system aimed at the jolts that travel up through a truck bed. For owners who would rather tow from a gooseneck coupler and keep the bed clear, the Goose Box 20K replaces the trailer's king pin with a gooseneck connection carrying its own air-ride cushioning.
Pin boxes are a Reese speciality. The 5th Airborne uses air-ride technology to dampen road shock and reduce the chucking motion that makes fifth wheel towing tiring, while the Sidewinder was designed for short-bed pickups, pivoting the connection point so the trailer can turn sharply without the front cap meeting the cab.
For conventional towing, Reese weight distribution systems restore load to the tow vehicle's front axle and control sway. The Pro Round Bar distributes weight evenly while damping sway, and the Pro Dual Cam II uses active cam-based sway control that works harder the stronger the sway force becomes. Complete kits pair bars, head and shank to a rated tongue weight, and dedicated sway control kits can be added to existing setups. The products suit RV owners, horse and livestock haulers and anyone towing near the upper end of a vehicle's rating.

The REESE® Custom Quick Install Mounting Kit 56023 is a mounting system designed to install the REESE® 30153 rails onto GMC and Chevy 2500/3500 pickup trucks. It accommodates three different truck frame configurations: frames without helper spring brackets, frames with helper spring brackets, and frames without helper spring brackets but with threaded inserts inside. The kit includes frame brackets, fasteners, spacers, and installation hardware needed to secure the rails to the truck bed and frame.
The REESE® 56023 kit is designed for GMC and Chevy 2500/3500 pickup trucks, but specific years and models are not listed in the installation manual. Before purchasing or installing, visit www.ReeseProducts.com to verify that your vehicle year and model are supported by this kit.
No. The manual explicitly states: "Do not install this product on or attempt to tow with a truck with a 5-1/2' bed unless a sidewinder pin box coupler has been installed on the trailer." If your truck has a 5-1/2' bed, you must have a sidewinder pin box coupler on your trailer before installing this kit.
The kit accommodates three frame configurations: (1) Vehicle frames without helper spring brackets, (2) Vehicle frames with helper spring brackets, and (3) Vehicle frames without helper spring brackets but with threaded inserts inside the frame in the area of the front holes. Configuration 3 requires additional fasteners not included in the kit: four GM bolts p/n 11589278 (or equivalent flanged hex M12X1.75X 70-75 mm length Gr. 10.9 bolts) that must be purchased separately from a GM dealer.
Yes. If your truck frame has no helper spring brackets but has threaded inserts inside the frame (configuration 3), you will need to purchase four additional GM bolts p/n 11589278 from a local GM dealer. These are not included in the 56023 kit. Alternatively, you can use equivalent flanged hex M12X1.75X (70-75 mm length) Grade 10.9 bolts. If you use Grade 10.9 hex bolts instead of flanged hex bolts, you will also need M12 or ½" conical washers or a flat washer plus lock washer for each bolt.
No. The manual states: "Do not install mounting rails over plastic bed liners. Plastic bed liners must be cut out of the way to provide metal to metal contact." However, the kit may be installed on spray-in bed liners.
The following tools are required: Wrenches in 3/4", 13mm, and 18mm sizes; Drill bits in 1/8" and 9/16" sizes; a Center Punch; a Measuring Tape; and a Torque Wrench. You will also need the Fastener Kit 56023F.
The kit includes: 8 carriage bolts ½"-13x1.75" Grade 8; 4 carriage bolts ½"-13x5.5" Grade 8; 4 carriage bolts ½"-13x4.5" Grade 8; 8 nuts ½"-13 Grade 8; 8 conical washers ½"; 4 tube spacers ½"x3.5"; 4 tube spacers ½"x2.5"; 8 pull wires ½"; 8 U-shaped blocks ¼"x1"x2"; 8 blocks ¼"x1"x3"; 8 blocks ¼"x1"x2"; driver and passenger side front and rear frame brackets; and inside frame mounting blocks. Additional hardware is supplied with the 30153 rail kit. The Fastener Kit 56023F is required separately.
A Standard bed is approximately 6 feet long, and a Long bed is approximately 8 feet long. The mounting rail hole locations differ between the two bed lengths. Figure 3 in the manual shows the correct dimensions for locating the proper distance from the rear of the rail to the back edge of the truck bed: for a Standard bed, the front rail should be 27-3/4" from the back edge and the rear rail 49-11/16" from the back edge; for a Long bed, the front rail should be 30-11/16" from the back edge and the rear rail 52-5/8" from the back edge.
Yes. Drilling is required. You must drill holes through the truck bed floor to mount the rails. The process involves: (1) marking hole locations with a center punch, (2) drilling initial 1/8" pilot holes, (3) aligning the brackets with the pilot holes, and (4) enlarging the holes to 9/16" to accommodate ½" carriage bolts. The manual cautions: "When drilling holes through the bed be sure what is below the truck bed in those locations."
Yes, if your truck has a plastic bed liner. The manual states: "Plastic bed liners must be cut out of the way to provide metal to metal contact." You must remove or cut away the plastic liner in the areas where the mounting rails and brackets will be installed. Spray-in bed liners do not need to be removed.
No welding is required. The installation uses bolted connections only. However, drilling through the truck bed floor is required and is permanent. The manual does not require any cutting, grinding, or bending of the truck frame itself.
All ½" Grade 8 hardware must be torqued to 110 ft-lbs (149 N·m). If your truck has threaded inserts and requires M12 Grade 10.9 bolts (p/n 11589278 or equivalent), those must be torqued to 90 ft-lbs (122 N·m). The manual specifies: "Tighten first REESE bed rails to mounting brackets and then mounting brackets to truck frame."
The maximum trailer weight (GTW) is 27,000 LB (12,247 Kg) and the maximum tongue weight (TW) is 5,400 LB (2,550 Kg). The manual cautions: "Under no circumstances do we recommend exceeding the lower of towing vehicle manufacturers recommended vehicle towing capacity, or the lowest rated component of your system, or below" these limits. Always verify that your truck's manufacturer rating does not exceed these limits.
Two types of spacers are used: Tube Spacers ½"x3.5" (four included in the kit, used with front mounting blocks) and Tube Spacers ½"x2.5" (four included in the kit, used with rear mounting blocks). Additionally, the 30153 rail kit supplies a 5/16" U-shaped spacer and the 56023 kit supplies a ¼" U-shaped spacer, which overlap to overcome bed corrugation transitions. The combined thickness of 5/16" + ¼" is slightly greater than the bed corrugation height, which is allowable.
Three sizes of ½"-13 Grade 8 carriage bolts are used: (1) ½"-13x1.75" (8 bolts) for outside frame mounting, (2) ½"-13x5.5" (4 bolts) for front mounting blocks, and (3) ½"-13x4.5" (4 bolts) for rear mounting blocks. All must be torqued to 110 ft-lbs (149 N·m). If your truck requires M12 Grade 10.9 bolts instead (for configuration 3 with threaded inserts), those are 70-75 mm in length and must be torqued to 90 ft-lbs (122 N·m).
The installation sequence is: (1) Place and center the front mounting rail on the truck bed, mark and drill pilot holes (1/8"), (2) Install front frame brackets loosely and verify hole alignment, (3) Enlarge holes to 9/16" and install front mounting blocks and brackets with fasteners, (4) Reinstall the front rail with spacers and hand-tighten all fasteners, (5) Install rear frame brackets loosely, (6) Position the rear mounting rail and mark/drill its holes, (7) Install rear mounting blocks and brackets following the same procedure as the front, (8) Reinstall the rear rail and hand-tighten all fasteners, (9) Finally, torque all fasteners to specification: ½" Grade 8 hardware to 110 ft-lbs and M12 Grade 10.9 bolts to 90 ft-lbs. Tighten the rails to brackets first, then the brackets to the truck frame.
The driver side front bracket installation involves four steps: (1) Using two ½" fishwires provided, install two ½"x1.75" carriage bolts and 1"x3" blocks using the slot on the inside of the frame (the fuel tank blocks direct access to inside frame holes on the driver side). Run the fishwire from the slot and out through the bolt holes, keeping both fishwires on the bolt until the bracket is installed. (2) Place the conical washer on the carriage bolt and secure with a nut. (3) Position the front mounting block against the inside of the frame. The brake line bracket will be in the way, so loosen the two M8 brake line support bracket bolts to create space for the mounting block to pass through. (4) Install two ½"x5.5" carriage bolts running from inside the frame through the mounting block, ½"x3.5" tube spacer, and frame bracket. Place the conical washer and secure with the nut. Finally, fasten the brake line bracket bolts back in place.
The passenger side front bracket installation follows a similar procedure to the driver side: (1) Using two ½" fishwires provided, install two ½"x1.75" carriage bolts and 1"x3" blocks using the larger top hole on the inside of the frame. Run the fishwire from this hole and out through the carriage bolt holes. Place the conical washer and secure with the nut. (2) Position the front mounting block against the inside of the frame, aligning the slots with the frame bracket holes. (3) Install two ½"x5.5" carriage bolts running from inside the frame through the mounting block, ½"x3.5" tube spacer, and frame bracket. Place the conical washer and secure with the nut. Unlike the driver side, there is no brake line bracket interference on the passenger side.
The driver side rear bracket installation involves: (1) Using two ½" fishwires provided, install two ½"x1.75" carriage bolts and 1"x3" blocks using the larger top hole on the inside of the frame. Run the fishwire from this hole and out through the bolt holes. Place the conical washer and secure with the nut. (2) Position the rear mounting block against the inside of the frame. The wire harness will be in the way, so remove the wire harness retainers (tree style) from the frame using an appropriate tool. Use the hole behind the harness for fishing the fasteners. (3) Install two ½"x4.5" carriage bolts running from inside the frame through the rear mounting block, ½"x2.5" tube spacer, and frame bracket. Place the conical washer and secure with the nut.
The passenger side rear bracket installation follows a similar procedure to the driver side: (1) Using two ½" fishwires provided, install two ½"x1.75" carriage bolts and 1"x3" blocks using the larger top hole on the inside of the frame. Run the fishwire from this hole and out through the carriage bolt holes. Place the conical washer and secure with the nut. (2) Position the rear mounting block against the inside of the frame, aligning the slots with the frame bracket holes. (3) Install two ½"x4.5" carriage bolts running from inside the frame through the rear mounting block, ½"x2.5" tube spacer, and frame bracket. Place the conical washer and secure with the nut. Unlike the driver side, there is no wire harness interference on the passenger side.
A fishwire is a flexible wire tool used to route fasteners through difficult-to-access areas inside the truck frame. The kit includes eight ½" fishwires. During installation, you thread the fishwire through a slot or hole on the inside of the frame, then use it to guide the carriage bolt and block through the frame to the bracket hole on the outside. The fishwires are kept on the bolt until the bracket is fully installed and secured. This technique allows you to install fasteners in locations where direct access from inside the frame is blocked by components like the fuel tank or wire harness.
Use a tape measure to center each rail on the floor of the truck bed. For the front rail, measure the distance from the rear of the rail to the back edge of the truck bed and compare it to the correct dimension from Figure 3: for a Standard (6 ft) bed, the front rail should be 27-3/4" from the back edge; for a Long (8 ft) bed, it should be 30-11/16" from the back edge. For the rear rail, the distances are 49-11/16" (Standard bed) and 52-5/8" (Long bed). Once positioned correctly, use a center punch to mark the hole locations before drilling.
If the holes do not align, you must restart the installation at step 2 by adjusting the 1/8" holes in the bed of the truck. The manual states: "If holes do not align, restart the installation at step 2 by adjusting 1/8" holes in bed of truck." Once the pilot holes align with the brackets, remove the brackets and enlarge all the 1/8" holes to 9/16" for the ½" carriage bolts.
After the frame brackets are installed and the enlarged holes are ready, reposition the front mounting rail over the holes. Install the rail using carriage bolts supplied in the 30153 kit. Ensure that the 5/16" U-shaped spacer (supplied in the 30153 kit) and the ¼" U-shaped spacer (supplied in the 56023 kit) are installed as shown in Figures 2.a and 2.b. The spacers should overlap to overcome bed corrugation transitions and provide better contact. Attach the ½" conical washers and hex nuts on the bottom side of the frame brackets. Install the center bolt using the supplied 1"x2" block on the bottom side of the bed floor. Hand-tighten all fasteners initially; final torquing occurs after both rails are installed.
Place the unassembled 5th wheel support arches/slider/goose into the already installed front mounting rail. Position the rear mounting rail with the support arches/slider/goose by inserting the tabs into the mounting rail and pushing the mounting rail tight towards the front mounting rail. Ensure that the rear mounting rail is centered on the bed of the vehicle. This positioning will ensure that the 5th wheel has a snug fit to the truck. Note: If more than one hitch product will be used with the mounting rails, both types should be used at the same time to align the mounting rails and ensure that one product does not compromise the fit of the other.
Hand-tighten all fasteners initially during the installation process (steps 3, 6, and 8). This allows for adjustment and alignment of the brackets and rails. Only after both the front and rear rails are fully installed and positioned should you perform final torquing. The manual specifies: "Tighten first REESE bed rails to mounting brackets and then mounting brackets to truck frame." Torque all ½" Grade 8 hardware to 110 ft-lbs (149 N·m) and M12 Grade 10.9 bolts to 90 ft-lbs (122 N·m).
If your truck has helper spring brackets (configuration 2), follow the standard installation steps 3-6 for the front brackets, but with a modification: After positioning the front frame bracket, place the front helper spring bracket (which you removed earlier) back on top of it and re-install the factory M12 bolts. Attach a 1"x2" spacer block for the front bolt. Follow the same procedure for the rear brackets (steps 7-11), placing two 1"x2" spacer blocks on the rear two bolts before installing the helper spring bracket and re-installing the factory M12 bolts. Refer to Figures 11 and 13 in the manual for detailed guidance.
If your truck has no helper spring brackets but has threaded inserts inside the frame (configuration 3), you must first purchase four GM bolts p/n 11589278 (or equivalent flanged hex M12X1.75X 70-75 mm length Grade 10.9 bolts) from a GM dealer. Follow the standard installation steps, but use these M12 bolts instead of the ½" carriage bolts for the frame bracket connections. If using Grade 10.9 hex bolts instead of flanged hex bolts, you will also need M12 or ½" conical washers or a flat washer plus lock washer for each bolt. Torque M12 Grade 10.9 bolts to 90 ft-lbs (122 N·m). CAUTION: Pay close attention while tightening as the fuel tank is close to the inside of the truck frame.
The maximum trailer weight (GTW) is 27,000 LB (12,247 Kg) and the maximum tongue weight (TW) is 5,400 LB (2,550 Kg). However, you must not exceed the lower of: (1) your truck manufacturer's recommended towing capacity, (2) the lowest rated component of your system, or (3) these limits. Always verify your truck's manufacturer specifications before towing.
When drilling holes through the truck bed, you must be aware of what is located below the truck bed in those locations. The manual cautions: "When drilling holes through the bed be sure what is below the truck bed in those locations." This is important to avoid damaging fuel lines, brake lines, electrical wiring, or other components underneath the bed. Take time to inspect the underside of the truck bed before drilling to identify any obstacles or hazards.
Before installing the kit, the manual recommends: (1) Visit www.ReeseProducts.com to verify that your vehicle year and model are supported by the kit and to ensure you have the most recent revision of the installation instructions. (2) Always measure your truck and trailer before installing the hitch to ensure there is adequate clearance at the cab and at the bumper to allow for turns. This is critical for safe operation and to prevent damage during turning maneuvers.
After installation, verify that: (1) All fasteners have been torqued to the correct specifications (½" Grade 8 hardware to 110 ft-lbs / 149 N·m; M12 Grade 10.9 bolts to 90 ft-lbs / 122 N·m). (2) The mounting rails are centered on the truck bed. (3) There is adequate clearance at the cab and bumper for turning maneuvers. (4) All fasteners are secure and there are no loose components. The manual does not specify a retorque interval, so contact REESE® at 1-800-632-3290 if you have questions about post-installation maintenance.
The kit is designed for GMC and Chevy 2500/3500 pickups, but specific years and models are not listed in the manual. Visit www.ReeseProducts.com to verify your vehicle is supported before purchasing.
No, unless your trailer has a sidewinder pin box coupler installed. The manual explicitly prohibits installation on 5-1/2' bed trucks without this coupler.
You need: wrenches (3/4", 13mm, 18mm), drill bits (1/8", 9/16"), center punch, measuring tape, torque wrench, and the Fastener Kit 56023F.
Yes. Plastic bed liners must be cut away to provide metal-to-metal contact. Spray-in liners are acceptable and do not need to be removed.
Maximum trailer weight is 27,000 LB (GTW) and maximum tongue weight is 5,400 LB (TW). Do not exceed the lower of your truck manufacturer's rating or these limits.
Yes. If your truck frame has threaded inserts (configuration 3), you must purchase four GM bolts p/n 11589278 or equivalent M12X1.75X 70-75mm Grade 10.9 bolts from a GM dealer. These are not included in the kit.
You must restart the installation at step 2. Adjust the 1/8" holes in the bed of the truck to align with the frame bracket holes. The manual states: "If holes do not align, restart the installation at step 2 by adjusting 1/8" holes in bed of truck." Once the pilot holes align with the brackets, remove the brackets and enlarge all the 1/8" holes to 9/16" for the ½" carriage bolts.
The brake line bracket is in the way. The manual instructs: "While positioning front mounting block, the brake line bracket will be in the way. Loosen the two-brake line support bracket bolts (M8) as shown in figure (5), creating enough space for mounting block to pass through, until closely aligning mounting block slots with frame bracket holes." After positioning the mounting block and installing the carriage bolts, fasten the brake line bracket bolts back in place.
The wire harness is in the way. The manual instructs: "While positioning rear mounting block, wire harness will be coming in the way. Remove the wire harness retainers (tree style) with appropriate tool from the frame as shown in figure (6)." After removing the retainers, you can position the rear mounting block and use the hole behind the harness for fishing the fasteners through the frame.
