Tekonsha Engineering Company began in 1964 building RV steps and mirrors. Within a few years it had found its real calling, and by the 1970s Tekonsha was pioneering the manufacture of electronic trailer brake controllers, the product category that still defines the brand. More than half a century later it remains the reference name in trailer braking and is part of the Horizon Global group alongside Reese, Draw-Tite, Fulton, Bulldog and Wesbar.
A brake controller is the component that tells a trailer's electric brakes how hard to work and when, and getting that right is the difference between a controlled stop and a shove from behind. Tekonsha builds both major types. Proportional controllers use an internal accelerometer to sense how quickly the tow vehicle is slowing and apply trailer braking to match, so light braking stays light and hard braking is immediate. Time-delayed controllers ramp to a preset output over a fixed interval, a simpler and more economical approach that suits occasional towing.
The current brake controller range covers most of that ground. The Prodigy iD pairs with a phone through Tekonsha's EDGE technology for setup and monitoring, the P3 offers storable settings for multiple trailers and a trilingual colour LED display, the Prodigy P2 adds a dimmable display and boost mode for heavier loads, and the Voyager keeps operation simple and dependable. The Prodigy RF mounts to the trailer itself and controls wirelessly, which suits rental fleets and drivers who swap tow vehicles.
Installation is supported by vehicle-specific brake control harnesses that plug into a factory connector rather than requiring cut-and-splice wiring, along with mounting brackets and adapters. All removed items must be carefully reinstalled after the harness is secured.
Using two small relays and one large relay, carefully insert each relay into the relay jumper harness. The terminals of each relay will match the configuration of the relay jumper harness end. Ensure that all relays are fully inserted with locking tabs in place. Do not use relays other than those included, as different relays can cause the unit to malfunction or damage the vehicle or trailer.
Open the hood and locate the relay box behind the driver's side headlight. Open the cover and insert the two blue relays into the open cavities. Ensure that the relays are fully inserted with locking tabs in place.
From underneath the vehicle, locate the tow plug harness and the vehicle tow plugs behind the rear bumper near the center of the vehicle. Remove the protective caps from the vehicle tow plugs and return them to the customer. Ensure all connector surfaces are clean and free of dirt. Connect the tow ends to the vehicle's mating connectors, being careful not to damage the locking tabs. Verify that connectors are fully inserted with locking tabs in place.
Plug the 7-way socket (provided) into the Trailer Tow Harness. Route the 7-way connector to the center of the vehicle. Mount the 7-way socket end in an accessible location using a bracket or electrical box (not included). Secure the remainder of the harness with the provided cable ties, being careful to avoid areas that would pinch, cut, or melt the wire.
On the driver's side, under the trim panel area, locate the jumper harness connectors. The plugs will mate into the two relay jumper harness connectors. Ensure that the connectors are fully inserted with locking tabs in place. Secure the remainder of the harness with the provided cable ties.
Removal sequence: (1) open rear hatch and move cargo floor panel up, (2) remove rear threshold, (3) remove subwoofer if equipped, (4) remove three 10mm bolts and four retaining clips from cargo area, fold rear seats forward, and rotate cargo assembly, (5) remove two 10mm bolts from driver's side cargo loops and two retaining clips from carpeted trim piece. Reinstallation: reverse the sequence, carefully reinstalling all plastic trim panels, threshold, storage covers, and floor covering without pinching or cutting wires.
Do not exceed the lower of your vehicle manufacturer's rating or these maximum amperage limits: stop/turn light (10 amps), tail lights (10 amps), backup (10 amps), power circuit (30 amps), and trailer brakes for 3 axles/6 brakes (20 amps). Overloading the circuit can cause fires. Consult your vehicle's owner's manual and instruction sheet for additional information.
