For 4-cylinder models, skip steps 1, 2, and 8.
Bolt leaders are threaded onto the end of carriage bolts to help guide the bolt assembly through the reinforcing plate and frame access hole. They prevent the hardware from being pushed back inside the frame channels and must remain attached until the bolts are fully positioned.
After threading bolt leaders through the holes in the hitch frame straps and carefully ensuring the bolt assemblies are not pushed back into the frame channels, raise the hitch frame straps up to the vehicle frame. Remove the bolt leaders and install conical toothed washers and nuts to secure the straps in place.
The 1-1/2" carriage bolt (part 4) is installed through the square hole in the hitch and the vehicle's tie-down loop from the driver's side. A clamping block, conical toothed washer, and nut are installed on this bolt and hand-tightened to hold the hitch in place during installation.

A hitch or ball which has been damaged should be removed and replaced. Do not attempt to repair a damaged hitch or ball.
Prevent this by leaving bolt leaders attached to the carriage bolts. The bolt leaders act as a stop to prevent the hardware from being pushed back inside the frame. If this occurs, carefully fish the bolt assembly back out through the frame access hole and reposition it.
Before drilling heat shields on 6-cylinder models, mark the holes and hold the hitch in position to check alignment. Refer to the illustration for clarification. If alignment is incorrect, reposition the hitch and re-mark the drilling locations before drilling.
