You will need: wrenches in 17mm and 11/16" sizes, a 3/8" drill bit, and a torque wrench. The torque wrench is essential because fasteners must be tightened to specific torque values: M10 CL8.8 bolts to 59 Lb.-Ft. (80 N·M) and 7/16-14 GR5 bolts to 50 Lb.-Ft. (68 N·M).
If tie-down brackets are present on the vehicle frame rail, they must be removed before installation. Return the bolts and tie-down bracket to the vehicle owner. This is step 1 of the installation process.
Yes. You must enlarge the access holes in the vehicle passenger frame rail only to accept the spacer. The existing holes are 3/4" diameter; they are enlarged using a 3/8" drill bit to create the access hole modification shown in Figure 2. This is a permanent modification to the vehicle.
Drilling and hole enlargement must be performed on the passenger side frame rail only. The manual explicitly states 'Passenger side only' for the access hole modification.
1. Remove tie-down brackets if present. 2. Remove the 2 plastic rivets from the fascia tabs. 3. Enlarge the access holes in the passenger frame rail. 4. Feed the pull wire through the enlarged hole, attach spacer and bolt, and feed them into the frame rail one at a time; leave pull wire attached. 5. Paint any exposed metal. 6. Raise the hitch into position, feed pull wires through adjacent holes in the hitch, remove pull wires, and attach conical washers and nuts finger tight only. 7. Check that the hitch is centered on the vehicle. 8. Torque all fasteners to specifications. 9. Reinstall the plastic rivets into the bumper fascia.
The pull wires are used to guide the spacer and bolt through the enlarged access hole in the frame rail and into the frame. After the hitch is raised into position and the pull wires are fed through the adjacent holes in the hitch, the pull wires are removed. The pull wires are not permanent parts of the installation.
After raising the hitch into position and attaching the conical washers and nuts, tighten them finger tight only. Hand tighten next. Do not use a torque wrench at this stage. Only after the hitch is centered on the vehicle should you torque all fasteners to their final specifications using a torque wrench.
After raising the hitch into position and hand tightening the fasteners, visually check to assure the hitch is centered on the vehicle before final torque. The manual does not provide specific measurement tolerances for centering.
Tighten all M10 X 1.25 X 30 CL8.8 hex bolts with a torque wrench to 59 Lb.-Ft. (80 N·M).
Tighten all 7/16-14 X 1.75 GR5 carriage bolts with a torque wrench to 50 Lb.-Ft. (68 N·M).
Yes. After feeding the pull wire, spacer, and bolt into the frame rail, paint any exposed metal to prevent corrosion. This is step 4 of the installation process.
Yes. After torquing all fasteners to specifications, reinstall the plastic rivets back into the bumper fascia. These rivets were removed in step 2 to access the fascia tabs.
Observe safety precautions when working beneath a vehicle and wear eye protection. Do not cut access or attachment holes with a torch. When working under the vehicle, use appropriate lifting equipment and support.
The drawbar must be used in the Rise position only. The drawbar kit (part number 3593) is sold separately.
Check the hitch frequently to ensure all fasteners and the ball are properly tightened. The manual emphasizes that this is an ongoing maintenance requirement, not a one-time check.
If the hitch is removed, plug all holes in the trunk pan or other body panels to prevent entry of water and exhaust fumes. This prevents corrosion and contamination of the vehicle interior.
