The Air Lift 1000 MN-34 is an air spring suspension kit that provides load support for vehicles with coil springs and shock absorbers. It includes two air springs (part 48171), air line assemblies, a Schrader valve, and all necessary hardware to install an adjustable air suspension system. The kit allows you to adjust air pressure to level the vehicle under varying loads.
No. The installation of this kit does not alter the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) or payload of the vehicle. You must still check your vehicle's owner's manual and never exceed the maximum load listed for your vehicle. GVWR is the maximum allowable weight of the fully loaded vehicle including passengers and cargo, shown on the vehicle's Safety Compliance Certification Label. Payload is GVWR minus the Base Curb Weight.
You will need: a hoist or floor jacks, two safety stands, safety glasses, an air compressor or compressed air source, and a spray bottle with dish soap and water solution. The soap solution is used to check for air leaks at all connections before road testing.
The kit includes: 2 air springs (48171), 2 protectors (09453), 2 protectors (09567), 1 air line assembly (20937), 4 zip ties (10466), 2 valve caps (21230), 4 5/16" hex nuts (21233), 2 rubber washers (21234), 2 star washers (18411), 2 M8 flat washers (18501), 1 tee fitting (21236), 2 valves (21455), and 6 uni clamps (10638). 1. Jack up the rear of the vehicle or raise it on a hoist. Support the frame with safety stands. 2. Mark the location of the spring and upper spring mount with a marker so the spring can be reinstalled and indexed properly. 3. Remove the shock absorbers from the lower shock mounts on the axle. 4. Lower the axle or raise the body of the vehicle until the springs can be removed. 5. Remove lower shock mounting nuts and remove the bottom of the shocks from the control arm. Leave shocks attached at the top on both sides. 6. Remove the coil spring on the left side by lowering the axle. Repeat on the right side.
Place the air spring into the coil spring with the air stem facing down. The air spring should be positioned with the top and bottom protectors in the coil spring. The top protector is the thinner one (part 09453), and the bottom protector is the thicker one (part 09567). Install the assembly on the lower spring seat first with the air line going through the lower protector and control arm, then push the top of the coil into the upper spring seat.
You must drill a 1/4" (6 mm) diameter pilot hole first, then drill a 3/8" (10 mm) diameter final hole to allow attachment of the air line to the air cylinder. To locate the hole, place the air cylinder into the coil spring with the air stem facing down, place the assembly on the control arm lower seat, and mark where the cylinder air stem comes in contact with the control arm. Center punch the mark before drilling.
Drill a 5/16" (8 mm) diameter hole for the Schrader valve. Select a location that will be protected and accessible with an air hose, such as inside the fuel tank door, inside the rear wheel wells, or the license plate or rear bumper area. The rubber washer (part 21234) serves as an outside weather seal.
1. Slide the air line clamp (uni clamp) onto the air line. 2. Push the air line and clamp over the barbed stem so the air line covers all the barbs. 3. Compress the ears on the air line clamp with pliers and slide it forward to fully cover the barbs. Use this procedure for all air line connections. Leave sufficient air line slack to prevent any strain on the fitting during axle motions. Maintain at least 6" (152 mm) clearance from the exhaust system to the air line to prevent melting.
A single-path air line installation is recommended for vehicles that typically have even weight distribution. In a single-path system, both air springs connect to a tee fitting, which then connects to a single Schrader valve. Use a dual-path installation if weight in the vehicle varies from side to side and unequal pressures are needed to level the load. In a dual-path system, eliminate the tee fitting and route separate air lines for both air springs directly to the valve.
Select a location for the Schrader valve that will be protected and accessible with an air hose. Typical locations are inside the fuel tank door, inside the rear wheel wells, or the license plate or rear bumper area. Determine and cut adequate length of air line to reach from the tee to the Schrader valve (for single-path installation) or from the air springs to the valve (for dual-path installation).
After installing the air springs and raising the axle back to the starting position, re-attach the shock absorbers and torque them to the manufacturer's specification. The manual does not provide a specific torque value; refer to your vehicle manufacturer's documentation for the correct torque specification for your shock absorber lower mounting nuts.
There must be at least 3–4" (76–102 mm) clearance between the air spring and the exhaust. The heat from the exhaust could damage the air spring if clearance is insufficient. Additionally, maintain at least 6" (152 mm) clearance from the exhaust system to the air line to prevent the air line from melting. If there is insufficient clearance, contact Air Lift customer service at (800) 248-0892 to obtain a heat shield kit.
The maximum air pressure is 35 PSI (2.4 BAR). Never inflate the air springs beyond this pressure. However, the air pressure actually needed is dependent on load and gross vehicle weight rating. Always maintain normal ride height and never exceed your vehicle's maximum GVWR or payload rating.
The minimum recommended air pressure is 5 PSI (0.34 BAR). This is the lowest pressure at which the system should operate under normal conditions.
Perform the following checks before road testing: 1. Clearance test — Inflate the air springs to 25–35 PSI (1.7–2.4 BAR) and ensure at least 1/2" (13 mm) clearance from anything that might rub against each air spring. 2. Leak test — Inflate to 25–35 PSI and use a soapy water solution to check all connections for leaks. All leaks must be eliminated before road testing. 3. Heat test — Verify at least 6" (152 mm) clearance from heat sources. If a heat shield was included, install it. If one is required but not included, call Air Lift customer service at (800) 248-0892. 4. Road test — Drive the vehicle 10 miles (16 km) and recheck for clearance, loose fasteners, and air leaks.
