The MN-71 is designed for American Motors vehicles and Mitsubishi Montero models with coil spring suspension. The installation procedure differs between these applications: American Motors vehicles use a thick tapered protector in the upper spring seat with the air cylinder stem at the bottom, while Mitsubishi Montero uses a 1/2" thick protector on top of the cylinder with the stem towards the top. Confirm your vehicle model matches one of these applications before purchasing.
Shock absorber removal is optional and only necessary if you need additional clearance. The manual states: "Lower axle or raise body of vehicle until suspension is fully extended. If necessary, additional clearance between the coil may be obtained by removing the shock absorbers from the lower shock mountings and lowering the suspension an additional one to two inches." If you can insert the flattened air cylinder into the lowest coil opening without removing shocks, you do not need to remove them. If you do remove shocks, observe tension on the brake hose and do not strain it.
Air cylinders are shipped in a flattened "as molded" shape. Before installation, remove the plastic cap from the barbed stem on the end of the cylinder and push on the cylinder to exhaust as much air as possible. Replace the cap on the stem to maintain the flat shape. This makes the cylinder easier to insert into the coil spring opening. Once the cylinder is fully inside the coil, remove the cap again to allow it to assume its proper shape.
Use a blunt instrument such as a spoon-type tire iron to push the flattened air cylinder up within the coil spring. Do not use sharp or pointed tools that could damage the cylinder.
In American Motors applications, insert the flattened air cylinder into the lowest coil opening with the stem at the bottom. After the cylinder is fully within the coil and assumes its proper shape, push it to the top of the coil spring. The lower protector is then inserted through the coil opening and centered on the axle spring seat.
In Mitsubishi Montero applications, insert the flattened air cylinder into the lowest coil opening with the stem towards the top. After the cylinder is fully within the coil and assumes its proper shape, push it to the bottom of the coil spring. The 1/2" thick protector is then inserted on top of the air cylinder through the coil opening and centered over the barbed stem. Note: the thick tapered protector is not used for Montero applications.
The protector prevents the air cylinder from being pinched or damaged by the coil spring. In American Motors vehicles, a thick tapered protector is installed in the hole in the upper spring seat, and a lower protector is centered on the axle spring seat. In Mitsubishi Montero applications, a 1/2" thick protector is inserted on top of the air cylinder through the coil opening and centered over the barbed stem. The protector distributes the spring load evenly across the cylinder.
A tee air line installation is recommended for most applications. Use dual air lines only if weight in the vehicle varies from one side to the other and unequal pressures are needed to level the load, or to compensate for axle torque transfer in racing applications. The tee configuration connects both air cylinders to a single inflation valve, while dual lines use separate inflation valves for each side.
Keep the air line at least 12 inches away from the exhaust system, engine and all heat sources to prevent the air line from melting. Also avoid routing air lines near the battery, moving parts such as steering, suspension and cables, as these areas may cause failure of the air line.
Follow this procedure for all air line connections: (1) Slide an air line clamp onto the air line. (2) Push the air line over the barbed end of the straight fitting. (3) Compress the ears on the air line clamp with pliers and slide it down to fully cover the barred section. Repeat this process for each connection. Ensure the clamp fully covers the barbed section to prevent air leaks.
Drill a 5/16" hole for the inflation valve. The valve can be mounted in the hood release, front bumper, fender flange, or behind the license plate, ensuring that the valve will be protected and accessible with an air hose. A rubber washer is included for outside weather seal.
For dual air line installations, cut air line not longer than 90 inches to reach from the valve location to each air cylinder.
Route the air line along the inner fender panel or frame rails to the air cylinders and inflation valve location. Secure the air line to the chassis using plastic straps or wire. Leave sufficient air line slack to prevent any strain on fittings during axle motions. Do not route air lines in areas that may cause failure, such as near the battery, exhaust, engine, or moving parts like steering, suspension and cables.
Yes, a heat shield kit must be installed. The manual states "Install Heat Shield kit" as step 4 of the installation process. Separate instructions are included with the heat shield kit. Inflate the air springs to 35 psi initially. This is the maximum operating pressure. After inflation, check for air leaks at all fittings and the valve core using a soapy water solution. After the vehicle is loaded with payload, you can adjust the air pressure downward to level the vehicle and for ride comfort.
Use a soapy water solution to check for air leaks at all air line connections and the valve core. Apply the soapy solution to each connection point and look for bubbles, which indicate a leak. This check should be performed after initial inflation to 35 psi and again if pressure loss exceeds 5 psi after 24 hours.
After replacing the wheels, removing safety stands and carefully lowering the vehicle to the ground, check to ensure the cylinder is properly seated in the coil spring. Then deflate the air springs in 5 psi intervals to determine the best ride and handling. Sufficient air pressure should be maintained to help prevent bottoming-out on large bumps and potholes.
The minimum air pressure is 5 psi. Always maintain at least 5 psi to prevent chafing or coil pinch. Failure to maintain minimum pressure will void the warranty. Check pressure weekly.

After lowering the vehicle to the ground, check to ensure the cylinder is properly seated in the coil spring. If the cylinder is not seated, the protector may not be properly positioned or the cylinder may not have fully expanded. Verify that the protector is centered correctly: in American Motors vehicles, the lower protector should be centered on the axle spring seat; in Montero applications, the 1/2" thick protector should be centered over the barbed stem. Ensure the cylinder has fully assumed its proper shape after the plastic cap was removed.
