Yes. The coil springs must be removed to modify the internal hollow spring and make room for the air springs. The manual requires you to jack up the rear of the vehicle, support the frame with safety stands, remove shock bolts, Panhard rod bolt, brake line bracket bolt, ABS bracket bolt, and sway bar links before dropping the axle and removing the coil springs.
The hollow spring is permanently modified by using a hack saw to cut off four convolutes (coils) from the spring. After removal from the coil spring, the center hole is enlarged using a 1/2" drill bit to accommodate the air line.
