Air Lift adjustable air helper springs level your load, and give your truck, van, or SUV a safer, more comfortable ride. Air springs are easy to install inside the existing coil spring with common mechanic's tools. Just add air when towing or hauling a heavy load, and reduce air pressure when unloaded, they are fully adjustable for a great ride. Air Lift air springs eliminate sag, sway, and bottoming out. They are made with rugged, durable components for long, reliable service. Air Lift 1000 kits fit many popular customer vehicles with coil springs. They're designed to: add support to rear springs on many popular SUVs, replace OEM front air springs on P-30 motor homes, provide front end support for snowplows, winches, etc., improve muscle car traction for drag racing, and improve ride and handling for full-size vans and trucks with front coil springs. Air adjustable with quick connecting, easy-to-use air fittings, Air Lift 1000 air helper springs have a typical max pressure of 35 PSI on cars and SUVs, and 90 PSI on motorhomes. The MN-130 fits multiple vehicle types: all Chrysler, Dodge, and Plymouth vehicles; Ford Thunderbirds and Mercury Cougars ('89–'91 and '92–'94); Eagle Summit SWs and Mitsubishi Expos; all GM vehicles; Ford Taurus and Mercury Sable station wagons; Volkswagen vans; Mazda MPV vans; and Toyota Rav4s. Consult the manual's Figures 1, 2, and 3 for your specific vehicle, as installation procedures vary by make and model.
No. Air springs do not change your vehicle's weight ratings (GAWR, GCWR, or GVWR). You must not exceed your vehicle manufacturer's maximum gross vehicle weight rating, as doing so is dangerous and voids the Air Lift warranty.
Jack up the rear of the vehicle or raise it on a hoist. Support the frame with safety stands. Lower the axle or raise the body of the vehicle until the suspension is fully extended. Remove the plastic cap from the barbed stem on the air cylinder and exhaust all air by rolling the cylinder up toward the stem, then replace the cap to hold the flattened shape.
Coil spring removal depends on your vehicle. For Thunderbirds and Cougars, the coil spring should NOT be removed. For Chrysler, Dodge, and Plymouth vehicles, you must remove the lower shock absorber attaching bolts, lower the axle, and remove the coil springs, noting the location of the coil spring end in the lower spring seat. For GM vehicles, Ford Taurus/Mercury Sable station wagons, Volkswagen, Toyota Rav4, Eagle Summit SW, and Mitsubishi Expo, the air cylinder is inserted directly into the coil spring without removal.
Drilling is required for Chrysler, Dodge, Plymouth, Thunderbird, Cougar, Eagle Summit SW, and Mitsubishi Expo vehicles. You must drill a 3/4" diameter hole in the lower spring seat using a provided template. For Eagle Summit SW and Mitsubishi Expo, you increase an existing hole to 3/4". You must also drill a 5/16" hole for the inflation valve. For GM vehicles, Ford Taurus/Mercury Sable station wagons, Volkswagen, Mazda MPV, and Toyota Rav4, no drilling of the spring seat is required; the cylinder is inserted between the coils.
Yes, for Chrysler, Dodge, and Plymouth vehicles only. Cut off the exposed portion of the rubber jounce bumper within 1/2 inch of the metal cup. The '92–'94 Thunderbird and Cougar are not equipped with a rubber jounce bumper, so this step does not apply to them. It may be necessary to dull the corners of the metal cup with a file.
For Thunderbirds, Cougars, Chrysler, Dodge, and Plymouth: insert the air cylinder into the coil spring with the stem at the bottom. Push the cylinder up within the coil by hand or with a blunt instrument such as a spoon-type tire iron. For GM vehicles, Ford Taurus/Mercury Sable, Volkswagen, and Toyota Rav4: insert the flattened air cylinder between the middle coils with the valve stem toward the inboard side, then push it in and locate the stem toward the center of the vehicle spaced equally between the coils. For Eagle Summit SW and Mitsubishi Expo: insert with the barbed stem toward the bottom and push up within the coil. When fully inserted, remove the cap and allow the cylinder to assume its "as molded" shape.
Tee air line installation is recommended unless weight in the vehicle varies from one side to the other and unequal pressures are needed to level the load. With tee installation, a single air line branches to both left and right cylinders. Dual air line installation uses separate air lines and inflation valves for each side, allowing independent pressure adjustment. Choose dual installation only if you need different pressures on each side.
Use this procedure for all air line connections: (1) Slide an air line clamp onto the air line. (2) Push the air line over the barbed stem, covering all the barbs. (3) With pliers, compress the ears on the air line clamp and slide it forward to fully cover the barbed section. Repeat this procedure for each connection point.
Route air lines along the cross member and either the lower control arm or upper spring seat to the air cylinder. Keep air lines at least 8 inches from the exhaust system to prevent melting. Leave sufficient slack in the air lines to prevent strain on fittings during axle motion. Attach air lines to the frame using plastic straps or wire. For the inflation valve line, route along the frame to your chosen valve location.
Select a location that is protected and accessible with an air hose. Options include the gas cap well, trunk, rear bumper, fender flange, behind the license plate, or rocker panel flange. No. Air pressure can be adjusted with any type of compressor as long as it can produce sufficient pressure to service the springs. Even a bicycle tire pump can be used, though it requires significant effort.
Inflate your air springs to 25 psi before adding the payload. This allows the air cylinder to properly mesh with the coil spring. After the vehicle is loaded, adjust air pressure downward to level the vehicle and for ride comfort. When carrying a payload, increase tire inflation pressure by 2 psi above normal (not to exceed tire manufacturer's maximum) for each 100 lbs of additional load on the axle.
If the vehicle's headlights are shining into the trees or the vehicle is leaning to one side, raise the air pressure to level it. Start with the vehicle level or slightly above, and when in doubt, add air. Adjust pressure up and down to find the best ride and level.
If the vehicle has a rough and harsh ride, it may be due to either too much or too little pressure. Try different pressures to determine the best ride comfort. Stability should be the priority over a perfectly level and comfortable ride.
If the vehicle rocks and rolls, adjust the air pressure to reduce movement. Increasing pressure generally improves stability. It may be necessary to maintain different pressures on each side of the vehicle if loads such as water, fuel, and appliances cause it to be heavier on one side. Differences as much as 50 psi are not uncommon.
If the front of the vehicle dives while braking, increase the pressure in the front air bags if equipped.
If you suspect that the air springs have bottomed out, increase the pressure. Bottoming out occurs when the air spring is compressed to its limit and can cause a harsh ride and loss of support.
Required tools include a jack and safety stands, a drill with 3/4" and 5/16" bits, a file, pliers, a spoon-type tire iron or blunt instrument, plastic straps or wire, and a compressor or pump to inflate the cylinders to 25 psi. For Thunderbirds and Cougars: no. For Chrysler, Dodge, and Plymouth: yes, remove them to access the spring seat. For all other vehicles: no, insert the cylinder between the coils without removal.
