Jack up the rear of the vehicle or raise it on a hoist. Support the frame with safety stands. Lower the axle or raise the body of the vehicle until the suspension is fully extended. For Tracker, Sidekick, X90, Grand Vitara, Vitara, and XL-7 models, you will also need to remove the lower shock absorber attaching bolts and remove the coil springs.
First, remove the plastic cap from the barbed stem and exhaust all air from the cylinder by rolling it up toward the barbed stem. Replace the cap to hold the cylinder flat. Form the cylinder into a "hot dog bun" shape, using string, tape, or wire if necessary to retain the shape. Insert the formed cylinder into the lower coil spring seat opening with the stem at the bottom. Push the cylinder up within the coil by hand or with a blunt instrument such as a spoon-type tire iron. When fully inside the coil, remove the cap and allow the cylinder to assume its "as molded" shape. Push the cylinder to the top of the coil and insert the protector on top of the lower spring seat, snapping it downward into position.
Yes. You must center punch and drill a 3/4" diameter hole in the lower spring seat. Remove all burrs and sharp edges after drilling. The manual recommends setting the spring with the bag installed on the vehicle to see where the stem will contact the lower spring seat before drilling, as the offset spring seat may affect hole placement.
Yes. Cut off the exposed portion of the rubber jounce bumper within 1/2" of the metal cup. This is a required modification for these vehicle models.
Torque the lower shock absorber bolts to 25 ft. lbs. when reattaching them after coil spring reinstallation.
Keep the air line at least 8 inches away from the exhaust system at all times. This clearance must be maintained throughout the entire routing path from the tee or inflation valve to the air cylinders.
Tee air line installation is recommended unless weight in the vehicle varies from one side to the other and unequal pressures are needed to level the load. In that case, dual air lines are used. The manual provides separate routing procedures for each method on pages 2 and 3.
Slide an air line clamp onto the air line. Push the air line over one side of the tee until all the barbs are covered. Repeat for the other leg of the tee. With pliers, slide the air line clamp forward until it fully covers the barbed section. Repeat for the other leg.
Insert the air line through the spring seat. Push the air line onto the stem, covering all the barbs. With pliers, slide the air line clamp upward until it fully covers the barbed section.
Select a location for the inflation valve in the gas cap well, the truck bed, rear bumper, fender flange, or behind the license plate. Ensure the valve will be protected and accessible with an air hose. Drill a 5/16" hole for the inflation valve and mount it as illustrated in Figure 8, using the rubber washer for outside weather seal.
The tailpipe must be at least 2-3 inches from the air cylinders. After raising the axle or lowering the body until the air cylinders lightly touch the upper spring seat and lower spacers, check tailpipe clearance. If necessary, loosen clamps and rotate or move the air line to obtain additional clearance.
Route the air line along the frame to the desired inflation valve location and cut off excess. Attach the remaining air line with plastic straps or wire.
Drill a 5/16" hole for the inflation valve. The rubber washer included with the valve serves as an outside weather seal.
Minimum air pressure is 5 p.s.i. Maximum air pressure is 25 p.s.i. Failure to maintain the minimum pressure of 5 p.s.i. will void the warranty.
Inflate the air cylinders to 30 lbs. air pressure during initial installation. Test for air leaks by applying a liquid soap and water solution to all valve cores, fittings, and connections. Lower the vehicle to the ground and deflate the air springs in 5 p.s.i. intervals to determine the best ride and handling. For normal operation, inflate the air springs to 35 p.s.i. before adding payload. After the vehicle is loaded, adjust the air pressure downward to level the vehicle and for ride comfort.
Do not inflate the air cylinders before reading the inflation procedures. The manual emphasizes this warning to ensure proper setup and safety.
Apply a liquid soap and water solution to all valve cores, fittings, and connections. Bubbles will indicate the location of any air leaks. This test should be performed after initial inflation to 30 lbs. and again if pressure loss exceeds 5 lbs. after 24 hours.
A 2-4 p.s.i. loss after initial installation is normal. Recheck air pressure after 24 hours. If pressure has dropped more than 5 lbs., re-test for leaks with a soapy water solution.
Check pressure weekly. Always maintain at least 5 p.s.i. air pressure to prevent chafing or coil pinch. Failure to maintain minimum pressure will void the warranty.
Use a soapy solution to check all air line connections and the valve core before removing the cylinder. This will help you locate the source of the leak.
Do not exceed the vehicle manufacturer's maximum gross vehicle weight rating. The Air Lift system is designed to support load leveling within the vehicle's design limits.
Leave sufficient air line slack to prevent any strain on fittings during axle motions. This prevents damage to connections and air line clamps as the suspension moves up and down.
The MN-131 fits Chevrolet Escort, Lynx, Tracker, Sidekick, X90, Grand Vitara, Vitara, and XL-7 models. Installation procedures differ by vehicle model.
Drilling is required only for Tracker, Sidekick, X90, Grand Vitara, Vitara, and XL-7 models: drill a 3/4" hole in the lower spring seat and a 5/16" hole for the inflation valve. Escort and Lynx models do not require drilling the spring seat.
