The LoadLifter 5000 Series is an air spring suspension system for Dodge/RAM 2500/3500 trucks with leaf springs. It provides up to 5,000 pounds (2,268 kg) of load-leveling support with air adjustability from 5–100 PSI (0.34–7 BAR). The system uses reinforced, commercial-grade convolute bellows manufactured like a tire with layers of rubber and cords. It helps maintain normal ride height under load and can be adjusted based on your vehicle's load.
The LoadLifter 5000 Series is designed for Dodge/RAM 2500/3500 trucks. The manual does not specify which model years are covered. Contact Air Lift customer service at (800) 248-0892 or (517) 322-2144 (outside USA/Canada) to confirm fitment for your specific vehicle year and configuration.
Air Lift offers three versions: (1) Standard LoadLifter 5000 with zinc-plated steel roll plates and black nylon air lines; (2) LoadLifter 5000 Ultimate with black powder-coated roll plates and black nylon air lines; (3) LoadLifter 5000 Ultimate Plus with stainless steel roll plates, braided stainless steel air lines, and stainless steel air spring mounting hardware. You can identify which kit you have by examining the roll plates and air lines.
Yes. Air Lift offers two upgrade kits: part 52300 (braided stainless steel air line and fittings) and part 52301 (stainless steel roll plates, air spring mounting hardware, braided stainless steel air lines and fittings). These allow you to upgrade a standard or Ultimate kit to Ultimate Plus specifications.
The manual states that any type of load assist product could affect braking performance on vehicles equipped with a rear brake proportioning valve. Air Lift recommends checking with your vehicle dealer before installing this product. If your vehicle does not have a rear brake proportioning valve or is equipped with an anti-lock brake system, installation will have no effect on braking system performance.
Required tools include: standard and metric open-end or box wrenches (set), adjustable wrench, ratchet, standard and metric sockets (set), 5/16" drill bit (very sharp), 3/8" nut driver, heavy-duty drill, torque wrench, standard and metric hex-key wrenches (set), hose cutter/razor blade/sharp knife, hoist or floor jacks, two safety stands, safety glasses, air compressor or compressed air source, and a spray bottle with dish soap/water solution.
Yes. The jounce bumper must be removed before installation. On most 2WD models, it is bolted under the frame. On most 4WD models, it is bolted to a bracket welded to the frame. Remove it completely before proceeding with the installation.
No. The vehicle must be raised and the axle safely dropped away from the frame using safety stands or equivalent. This is necessary to position the air spring assemblies between the axle and frame. The manual explicitly states this must be done in order for the assemblies to be put into position.
Yes, drilling is required. You must drill a 5/16" (8 mm) hole for the Schrader valve(s) if one does not already exist. The manual specifies using a very sharp 5/16" drill bit and a heavy-duty drill. The hole is drilled in the location where you choose to mount the Schrader valve (typically inside the fuel tank filler door, inside rear wheel wells, or in the license plate/rear bumper area).
The upper frame brackets (part B) are installed with M10-1.5 x 35 mm button-head cap screws (part J) and must be torqued to 37 lb.-ft. (50 Nm).
The upper air spring brackets (part C) are installed with 3/8"-24 x 7/8" button-head cap screws (part N) and must be torqued to no more than 20 lb.-ft. (27 Nm).
The lower bracket/air spring hardware must be torqued to no more than 20 lb.-ft. (27 Nm). This is done after aligning the air spring to be perpendicular to the upper and lower brackets using the slot in the lower bracket.
The clamp bar (part A) hardware must be torqued to 16 lb.-ft. (22 Nm). The clamp bar is installed over the long lower bracket carriage bolts under the axle and capped with 3/8" flat washers and 3/8" nylon lock nuts.
The leaf spring U-bolt (part G) must be torqued to 10 lb.-ft. (14 Nm). It is installed after the clamp bar hardware has been torqued to 16 lb.-ft. (22 Nm).
The top frame bracket carriage bolts (part I, 3/8"-16 x 1 1/4") must be torqued to 31 lb.-ft. (42 Nm). These are installed after the air spring is aligned to be perpendicular to both the upper and lower brackets.
The 90-degree swivel elbow fitting (part P) is installed into the top of the air spring. It is installed finger tight plus 1 1/2 turns. This fitting connects the air spring to the air line that routes to the Schrader valve.
The Schrader valve is installed in a 5/16" (8 mm) hole drilled in your chosen location (typically inside the fuel tank filler door, inside rear wheel wells, or in the license plate/rear bumper area). The valve assembly includes a hex nut, flat washer, star washer, and rubber washer. The nylon air line connects from the air spring to the Schrader valve. For LoadLifter 5000 Ultimate Plus kits, the recommended location is the rear bumper area or license plate.
No. The braided stainless steel air line cannot be trimmed. If you have excess air line, coil and secure it in an area where it will not be susceptible to damage.
Tighten the air line hex nut finger tight, then use two wrenches to turn one additional flat (1/6 of one full turn). Do not overtighten. The easiest way to tighten the fitting is off the vehicle before final installation.
The minimum bend radius for the nylon air line is 1" (25 mm). Avoid sharp bends and edges. Use zip ties to secure the air line to fixed points along the chassis without pinching or kinking it.
Leave at least 2" (50 mm) of slack in the air line to allow for any movement that might pull on the air line. This applies to both nylon and braided stainless steel air lines.
Use zip ties to secure the braided stainless steel air line to fixed points along the chassis every 6" to 8" (150–200 mm). Leave at least 2" (50 mm) of slack to allow for movement that might pull on the air line.
The maximum inflation pressure is 100 PSI (7 BAR). However, the actual air pressure needed is dependent on load and your vehicle's gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR). The minimum recommended pressure is 5 PSI (0.34 BAR). Never inflate beyond 100 PSI.
A distance of 4" (102 mm) or greater must be maintained between the upper and lower bracket for kit 88297 (2WD). Add sufficient pressure to maintain this height. This is critical for proper system operation.
Keep at least 6" (150 mm) of clearance between all air lines and the exhaust system. Avoid sharp bends and edges. If a heat shield is included in your kit, install it. If there is no heat shield but one is required, contact Air Lift customer service at (800) 248-0892.
Maintain at least 6" (152 mm) of clearance from heat sources for air springs and air lines. If a heat shield was included in your kit, install it. If there is no heat shield but one is required, call Air Lift customer service at (800) 248-0892.
Use a soapy water solution to check all air line connections and the inflation valve core before deflating and removing the air spring. This will help you identify the source of the leak. All leaks must be eliminated before the vehicle is road tested.
Perform the following checks in order: (1) Clearance test—inflate to 40–60 PSI and check for at least 1/2" clearance from tire, brakes, frame, shock absorbers and brake cables; (2) Leak test—inflate to 40–60 PSI and check all connections for leaks; (3) Heat test—verify at least 6" clearance from heat sources; (4) Fastener test—recheck all bolts for proper torque; (5) Road test—drive 10 miles and recheck for clearance, loose fasteners and air leaks.
After inflating the air springs to 40–60 PSI (2.8–4.1 BAR), verify at least 1/2" (13 mm) clearance from anything that might rub against each sleeve. Be sure to check the tire, brakes, frame, shock absorbers and brake cables on both sides.
Check air pressure weekly. Always maintain normal ride height. Never inflate beyond 100 PSI (7 BAR).
Check air pressure weekly and always maintain normal ride height. Never inflate beyond 100 PSI (7 BAR). If the system develops an air leak, use a soapy water solution to check all air line connections and the inflation valve core before deflating and removing the air spring. Do not exceed your vehicle's maximum gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) or payload rating.
No. For safety and to prevent possible damage to the vehicle, do not exceed the maximum gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) or payload rating as indicated by the vehicle manufacturer. The LoadLifter 5000 provides load-leveling support but does not increase your vehicle's weight capacity.
The air springs will last much longer if they are not the suspension limiter in either compression or extension. The shock absorber is usually the limiter on extension. If this is not the case, the use of limiting straps should be considered, particularly for off-road vehicles. Adjust air pressure so that normal ride height is maintained at all times, regardless of load.
Compressed air can cause injury and damage to the vehicle and parts if it is not handled properly. Do not try to inflate the air springs until they have been properly secured to the vehicle. This prevents the springs from moving unexpectedly or becoming dislodged during inflation.
Set the roll plate (part F) on top of the air spring (part E) so that the radiused (rounded) edge of the roll plate is toward the air spring and seated inside the roll plate. This ensures proper seating and alignment.
The long flanges of the lower bracket must be on the opposite side of the fitting at the top of the air spring assemblies. This ensures proper alignment and prevents interference with the air line fitting.
No. When installing the lower bracket onto the air spring assemblies using the 3/8" x 7/8" hex cap screws, 3/8" lock washers and 3/8" flat washers, leave them finger tight at this time. They will be torqued later after the assemblies are positioned on the vehicle.
Push the lower brackets up against the leaf spring pack so that the front and back legs are locked around the stock U-bolts. Set the supplied U-bolt (part G) around the spring stack and through the legs of the lower bracket. Install 3/8" flat washers over the U-bolts and cap with 3/8" nylon lock nuts. Draw the hardware snug only (do not tighten yet), making sure the lower bracket stays nested against the stock leaf spring pack and the legs are around the U-bolts.
Install the clamp bar (part A) over the long lower bracket carriage bolts under the axle and cap with 3/8" flat washers and 3/8" nylon lock nuts. Tighten the hardware evenly and torque to 16 lb.-ft. (22 Nm). After torquing the clamp bar hardware, torque the leaf spring U-bolt that was previously snugged to 10 lb.-ft. (14 Nm).
Using the slot in the lower bracket, push the bottom of the air spring in or out to align it so that it is perpendicular (or as perpendicular as possible) to the upper and lower brackets. Then, using the slot in the upper bracket, push the top of the air spring forward or backward to align it perpendicular to both brackets. Once tight, the upper and lower brackets will not be parallel and may look out of alignment, but this is acceptable due to the design.
Once the assemblies are adjusted and tight, make sure the brake lines on the back (both driver's and passenger's sides) do not come in contact with the rear carriage bolts. Adjust by pushing the line over to gain clearance if necessary. Check both sides carefully before completing the installation.
Early-model trucks have a hard brake line that is behind the axle and mounted away from the axle (with a gap between the axle and brake line). Late-model trucks have a hard brake line and possibly an ABS harness that is behind and mounted flush to the axle (with no gap). For early models, position the lower bracket carriage bolt between the brake line and axle. For late models, position the carriage bolt on the outside of the brake line.
On the passenger's (right) side, the lower bracket carriage bolt is always on the outside of the brake line on all early and late model trucks, regardless of the year.
Cut the air line in half using a razor blade or hose cutter, making clean, square cuts. Do not use scissors or wire cutters, as these will damage the air line.
Choose one of three recommended locations: (A) inside the fuel tank filler door, (B) inside rear wheel wells, or (C) license plate or rear bumper area. For LoadLifter 5000 Ultimate Plus kits, the recommended location is the rear bumper area or license plate. Drill a 5/16" (8 mm) hole if necessary at your chosen location.
Keep the braided stainless steel air line away from the fuel line, brake lines and electrical wires. Use zip ties to secure it to fixed points along the chassis every 6" to 8" (150–200 mm). Leave at least 2" (50 mm) of slack to allow for movement. Coil and secure any excess air line in an area where it will not be susceptible to damage.
The heat shield is a metal shield that protects the air line from exhaust heat. Attach it to the exhaust where it is closest to the passenger's (right) side air spring. Slide the air line thermal sleeve over the air line and position it where the air line is closest to the exhaust. Maintain 1/2" (13 mm) dead air space between the shield and exhaust. Double hose clamps may be necessary if needed.
The LoadLifter 5000 Series is designed for Dodge/RAM 2500/3500 trucks with leaf springs. Contact Air Lift at (800) 248-0892 to confirm fitment for your specific model year and configuration (2WD or 4WD).
Upper frame bracket: 37 lb.-ft. (50 Nm). Upper air spring bracket: 20 lb.-ft. (27 Nm). Lower bracket/air spring: 20 lb.-ft. (27 Nm). Clamp bar: 16 lb.-ft. (22 Nm). Leaf spring U-bolt: 10 lb.-ft. (14 Nm). Top frame bracket carriage bolts: 31 lb.-ft. (42 Nm).
Keep at least 6" (150 mm) of clearance between all air lines and the exhaust system. Avoid sharp bends and edges. Install the heat shield if included.
Perform clearance, leak, heat, fastener, and road tests. Inflate to 40–60 PSI and verify 1/2" clearance from tires, brakes, frame, shocks and cables. Check all connections for leaks. Recheck all bolt torque. Drive 10 miles and recheck clearance and fasteners.
Check air pressure weekly. Always maintain normal ride height and never inflate beyond 100 PSI (7 BAR).
Use a soapy water solution to check all air line connections and the inflation valve core. The soapy water will bubble at the location of the leak. Once you identify the source, deflate and remove the air spring to repair or replace the leaking component. All leaks must be eliminated before the vehicle is road tested.
Inflate the air springs to 40–60 PSI (2.8–4.1 BAR) and check for at least 1/2" (13 mm) clearance from anything that might rub against each sleeve. Be sure to check the tire, brakes, frame, shock absorbers and brake cables. If clearance is insufficient, verify that the air spring is properly aligned perpendicular to the upper and lower brackets using the slots in each bracket. Adjust as needed and retorque the hardware.
Once the assemblies are adjusted and tight, check both the driver's (left) and passenger's (right) sides to make sure the hard brake line is not rubbing on the carriage bolts. If it is, adjust by pushing the line over to gain clearance. This must be corrected before road testing to prevent brake line damage.
This condition is acceptable and is considered normal due to the way the lower bracket and upper bracket mounts are designed. Some variance from one unit to another is normal. As long as the air spring is aligned perpendicular to both brackets and all hardware is torqued to specification, the installation is correct.
