The manual states that any type of load assist product could affect brake performance on vehicles with a rear brake proportioning valve. Normal ride height is the distance between the bottom edge of the wheel well and the center of the hub with the vehicle in its "as delivered" condition. You measure it before installation to establish a baseline. Remove any unusual loads, ensure the vehicle is on a level surface, and measure from the center of the hub to the bottom edge of the wheel well. If leaf springs are sagging badly, use a jack to raise the rear end to the original "as delivered" ride height before measuring. Record this measurement—you will use it to verify proper installation.
Yes. You must lower the suspension to provide clearance to install the air spring unit. The manual provides three methods: (1) if using an axle contact hoist, place axle stands under the frame and lower the axle; (2) if using a frame contact hoist, place axle stands under the axle and lower the frame; (3) if using a jack supported by axle stands on the frame, use a floor jack to lower the axle. Choose the method appropriate for your lifting equipment.
1. Install the 90-degree swivel air fitting (D) to the top of the air spring; tighten 1.5 turns. 2. Align the upper bracket (B1 for left, B2 for right) with the air spring mounting holes and install the 3/8" stud (L) in the outboard tapped hole with the short threaded portion into the air spring; finger tight only. 3. Loosely install the 3/8" lock washer (N) and 3/8"-24 x 7/8" hex head cap screws (M). 4. Attach the lower bracket (C) to the bottom of the air spring using the forward, inboard hole. 5. Secure the lower bracket using 3/8" lock washers (N) and 3/8"-24 x 7/8" hex head cap screws (M); torque to 20 lb-ft (27 Nm). 6. Repeat for the driver's (left) side.
1. Remove the rubber jounce bumper from the frame rail and discard it. 2. Insert the 3/8" stud (L) through the original jounce bumper mounting hole. 3. Secure the stud using a 3/8" flat washer (K) and 3/8" nylon lock nut (J); torque to 16 lb-ft (22 Nm). 4. Tighten the hex head bolt (M) securely to 16 lb-ft (22 Nm). 5. Late models may have an existing hole that lines up with the top hole in the bracket—no drilling needed. Some models have a plastic stud for a wiring harness hanger; push it back through the frame and use the existing hole. 6. If no hole exists, select a small hole on the outboard side of the upper bracket not on the radius edge of the frame rail. Center-punch and drill a 5/16" hole. 7. Install 5/16"-18 x 1" hex head cap screws (H), flat washers (K), and 5/16" nylon lock nuts (J); torque to 15 lb-ft (20 Nm).
Not always. Late model vehicles often have an existing hole that lines up with the top hole in the upper bracket, so no drilling is required. Some models have a plastic stud for a wiring harness hanger in that hole—push it back through the frame and use the existing hole. If no hole exists, you must drill a 5/16" hole in the frame rail. Before drilling, you must check for hydraulic lines, gas lines, and electrical wires on both sides of the frame that may need to be moved aside. Use the upper bracket as a template, center-punch the hole location, and drill carefully.
1. On most late models with a small brake line hanger on the passenger's side shock bracket, remove the bolt holding the brake line bracket to the shock mount, move the line aside, and attach the brake line bracket spacer (O) to the axle using the existing M8 bolt. Reattach the stock brake line bracket to the spacer with the M8 bolt (P), washer (Q), and nut (R) provided; tighten both securely. 2. Set the assembly on the axle and check that the lower bracket is not pinching the brake line. On drum brake models, if it is pinching, bend the tab holding the brake line away from the axle housing, reposition the line, and bend the tab back. 3. Position the lower bracket so the outboard edge is between the leaf spring U-bolts. 4. Insert the U-bolt (F) in the outboard slot of the lower bracket. 5. On models with RSC (roll stability control), loosen the axle vent tube bolt and rotate the brake line junction box counter-clockwise as far as it will go; tighten the vent tube bolt securely. 6. Secure the lower bracket using saddle clamps (G), 3/8" flat washers (K), and 3/8" nylon lock nuts (J); torque to 16 lb-ft (22 Nm). Trim excess bolt if desired.
1. Cut the air line in half using a razor blade or hose cutter, making clean, square cuts; do not use scissors or wire cutters. 2. Choose locations for the Schrader valves (inside fuel tank filler door, inside rear wheel wells, or license plate/rear bumper area) and drill a 5/16" (8 mm) hole if necessary. 3. Install the Schrader valve in the chosen location. 4. Use zip ties to secure the air line to fixed points along the chassis without pinching or kinking it. Leave at least 2" (51 mm) of slack in the air line to allow for movement. The minimum bend radius is 1" (25 mm). 5. Maintain at least 6" (152 mm) clearance between all air lines and the exhaust system. 6. Attach the metal heat shield to the exhaust where it is closest to the passenger's (right) side air spring. Slide the air line thermal sleeve over the air line and position it where the air line is closest to the exhaust.
Lower bracket to air spring (3/8"-24 x 7/8" hex head cap screws): 20 lb-ft (27 Nm). Stud nut at frame (3/8" nylon lock nut): 16 lb-ft (22 Nm). Upper bracket hex head bolt: 16 lb-ft (22 Nm). Upper bracket to frame (5/16"-18 x 1" hex head cap screws): 15 lb-ft (20 Nm). Lower bracket to axle (saddle clamp nuts): 16 lb-ft (22 Nm).
The maximum air pressure is 100 PSI (7 BAR). However, the actual air pressure needed depends on load and gross vehicle weight rating. The minimum recommended pressure is 5 PSI (0.34 BAR). Never inflate beyond 100 PSI, and do not exceed your vehicle manufacturer's maximum gross vehicle weight rating or payload rating.
Do not inflate the air springs until they have been properly secured to the vehicle. Compressed air can cause injury and damage to the vehicle and parts if not handled properly.
