It uses reinforced, commercial-grade convolute bellows with an internal jounce bumper and allows air adjustability from 5–100 PSI (0.34–7 BAR). The system helps maintain ride height when towing or carrying heavy loads.
If your vehicle does not have a rear brake proportioning valve or is equipped with an anti-lock brake system, installation will have no effect on brake system performance. However, if your vehicle does have a rear brake proportioning valve, any load assist product could affect brake performance. Air Lift recommends checking with your vehicle dealer before installing the kit in this case.
Yes. On late-model Excursions, it may be necessary to splay the tabs on the lower bracket to fit the jounce bumper strike plate properly. Do this by placing the bracket in a vice and bending the tabs slightly with an adjustable wrench. Check fit by sliding the lower bracket onto the jounce bumper strike plate; it may be necessary to tap into place using a hammer.
Required tools include: 7/16", 5/16", 9/16" and 19 mm open-end or box wrenches; adjustable wrench; ratchet with 9/16" and 1/2" deep well sockets; 3/8" and 5/16" sharp drill bits; heavy-duty drill; torque wrench; hose cutter, razor blade, or sharp knife; C-clamp; hoist or floor jacks; two safety stands; safety glasses; air compressor or compressed air source; and spray bottle with dish soap/water solution.
The kit includes two air springs, upper brackets (driver's and passenger's side), two lower brackets, four roll plates, two swivel air fittings, fasteners (3/8" hex head cap screws in two sizes, 3/8" carriage bolts, 3/8" flat washers, 3/8" nylon lock nuts, lock washers, 3/8" hex bolts), one thermal sleeve, one air line assembly with six zip ties, two valve caps, washers (5/16" flat, rubber, and star), and four 5/16" hex nuts.
Normal ride height is the distance between the bottom edge of the wheel well and the center of the hub with the vehicle in the "as delivered" condition. Remove any unusual loads and examine your vehicle from the side to ensure it is on a level surface. If necessary (for example, if leaf springs are sagging badly), use a jack to raise the rear end so the vehicle achieves the original "as delivered" ride height. Measure and record this distance in inches or millimeters.
Set the roll plate (D) on the top and bottom of the air spring (A). Then install the swivel air fitting (E) into the top of the air spring. The fitting is pre-coated with sealant and should be tightened finger-tight plus 1½ turns with a 7/16" open-end wrench, tightening on the metal hex nut only. Do not overtighten.
The previously assembled air spring unit installs on the driver's (left) side. The carriage bolt is inserted up through the jounce bumper hole. The emergency brake cable must not be caught between the upper bracket and the frame, and the bracket should fit flush against the outside of the frame.
The passenger's (right) side uses bolt (F), washers (I), and nylon lock nut (J) to attach the upper bracket to the existing hole on the side of the frame. The bracket is secured using the supplied fasteners rather than a carriage bolt through the jounce bumper hole.
Remove the jounce bumper completely; the air spring will mount in its place. The driver's (left) side emergency brake cable must be unbolted by removing the nut and cable bracket and pulling it loose from the frame. Retain the fasteners for reattaching the cable bracket later.
Lowering can be done by lowering the axle or raising the frame. If using an axle contact hoist, place safety stands under the frame and lower the axle as needed. If using a frame contact hoist, place safety stands under the axle and raise the frame as needed. If using a jack and safety stands on the frame, use a floor jack to lower the axle.
Yes. You must drill a 3/8" hole through the jounce bumper strike plate using the existing holes in the lower bracket as a template. Additionally, you must drill a 5/16" (8 mm) hole for the Schrader valve location(s) on the vehicle body or bumper. Use a C-clamp or locking pliers to keep the lower bracket flat to the strike plate before drilling.
Tighten the upper and lower brackets to the air spring to 15 lb.-ft. (20 Nm).
Insert bolt (H) and washer (K) through the bracket and strike plate, install a washer (K) and nylon lock nut (J), and torque to 16 lb.-ft. (22 Nm).
Tighten the upper bracket mounting hardware to 15 lb.-ft. (20 Nm) after aligning the upper and lower brackets evenly with the air spring.
The swivel air fitting (E) should be tightened finger-tight plus 1½ turns with a 7/16" open-end wrench, tightening on the metal hex nut only. Do not overtighten.
Choose the location for the Schrader valve and drill a 5/16" (8 mm) hole if necessary. Recommended locations include: inside the fuel tank filler door (A), inside rear wheel wells (B), or in the license plate or rear bumper area (C). Install the Schrader valve in the chosen location.
Cut the air line in half using a razor blade or hose cutter, making clean, square cuts (do not use scissors or wire cutters). Use zip ties to secure the air line to fixed points along the chassis. Do not pinch or kink the air line. Leave at least 2" (51 mm) of slack in the air line to allow for any movement that might pull on it. The minimum bend radius for the air line is 1" (25 mm). Keep at least 6" (152 mm) of clearance between all air lines and the exhaust system, and avoid sharp bends and edges.
The thermal sleeve protects the air line from heat damage. Install it over the air line on the passenger's side where it is closest to the exhaust.
Do not try to inflate the air springs until they have been properly secured to the vehicle. Compressed air can cause injury and damage to the vehicle and parts if it is not handled properly.
The maximum inflation pressure is 100 PSI (7 BAR). However, the air pressure actually needed is dependent on load and gross vehicle weight rating. Never inflate beyond 100 PSI.
The minimum recommended pressure is 5 PSI (0.34 BAR).
Maintain at least 1/2" (13 mm) clearance from anything that might rub against each air spring sleeve. Be sure to check the tire, brakes, frame, shock absorbers and brake cables. Additionally, maintain at least 6" (152 mm) of clearance between all air lines and the exhaust system.
Perform the following checks: (1) Clearance test—inflate to 40–60 PSI and verify at least 1/2" clearance from tire, brakes, frame, shock absorbers and brake cables. (2) Leak test—inflate to 40–60 PSI and check all connections for leaks using soapy water; all leaks must be eliminated before road testing. (3) Heat test—verify at least 6" clearance from heat sources; install heat shield if included. (4) Fastener test—recheck all bolts for proper torque. (5) Road test—drive 10 miles and recheck for clearance, loose fasteners and air leaks.
Inflate the air springs to 40–60 PSI (2.6–4.1 BAR) and check all connections for leaks. Use a soapy water solution to detect leaks. All leaks must be eliminated before the vehicle is road tested. If the system develops an air leak during use, use a soapy water solution to check all air line connections and the inflation valve core before deflating and removing the air spring.
Check air pressure weekly. Always maintain normal ride height. Never inflate beyond 100 PSI (7 BAR). If the system develops an air leak, use a soapy water solution to check all air line connections and the inflation valve core before deflating and removing the air spring.
