The LoadLifter 5000 Ultimate is an adjustable air helper spring system that provides up to 5,000 pounds of load-leveling support with air adjustability from 5–100 PSI. It uses reinforced, commercial-grade single or double convolute bellows manufactured like a tire with layers of rubber and cords. The kit is designed for 3/4-ton and 1-ton pickups and SUVs with leaf springs, as well as motor home rear applications and various front applications using leaf springs.
Kit 88349 (MN-970) is recommended for most 3/4-ton and 1-ton pickups and SUVs with leaf springs. It is also used in motor home rear applications and various front applications where leaf springs are used. Consult the installation diagram and your vehicle's specifications to confirm fitment.
The manual does not specify whether this kit is compatible with coil spring suspensions. The LoadLifter 5000 Ultimate is designed for leaf spring applications. Contact Air Lift customer service at (800) 248-0892 to confirm compatibility with your specific vehicle.
No. The installation of this kit does not alter the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) or payload of the vehicle. You must check your vehicle's owner's manual and never exceed the maximum load listed for your vehicle. Exceeding the GVWR is dangerous and voids the Air Lift warranty.
The kit includes: 2 clamp bars (01531), 2 lower brackets (03108), 2 upper brackets (07984), 2 air springs (58496), 4 roll plates (11967), 2 90° swivel fittings (21837), 8 3/8"-24 x 7/8" hex head bolts (17203), 8 3/8" lock washers (18427), 14 3/8" flat washers (18444), 2 3/8"-16 x 1.5" carriage bolts (17156), 4 3/8"-16 x 7.0" carriage bolts (17163), 6 3/8"-16 nylon lock nuts (18435), 1 air line assembly (20086), 6 tie straps (10466), 2 valve caps (21230), 2 5/16" flat washers (18501), 2 rubber washers (21234), 2 star washers (21233), and 4 5/16" hex nuts (21233).
Required tools include: hoist or floor jacks, 2 safety stands, safety glasses, torque wrench, standard open-end combo wrenches, ratchet, metric and standard sockets, sharp 5/16" drill bits, heavy duty drill, hose cutter or sharp knife, air compressor or compressed air source, and spray bottle with dish soap/water solution.
Yes. You must remove the stock jounce bumpers and mounting brackets from under the frame rails on both sides of the vehicle before installing the air spring assemblies.
Yes, partially. You must temporarily remove the vent/brake line junction block on the driver side from the axle bracket by pulling the clip off the front side and pulling it back. You must also remove the bolt from the brake line bracket attached to the spring perch, unclip the brake line from the bracket on top of the differential, and pull the brake line back away from the axle to make room for the air spring assembly. These components are reconnected after the assemblies are positioned.
No. You must raise the vehicle and support it using jack stands or equivalent so that the axle can be dropped safely away from the frame. This is necessary to position the air spring assembly between the axle and frame. The manual shows a drive-on hoist as one example.
The radiused (rounded) edge of each roll plate must face toward the air spring so that the air spring is seated inside the roll plate. Roll plates are installed on both the top and bottom of each air spring assembly.
The right (passenger) side assembly is assembled as shown in the manual. To create the left (driver) side assembly, rotate the air spring assembly 180°. The slot in the lower bracket will face the rear of the vehicle and the fittings will be to the outside of the frame when installed. The upper bracket flange will be to your left and the fitting will point to your right on the driver side.
The upper bracket 3/8"-16 x 1.5" carriage bolts (J) go through the existing jounce bumper holes in the bottom of the frame. The flanges on the upper bracket must fit on the inside of the lower frame flange.
The last two 3/8"-16 x 7" carriage bolts (K) inserted into the lower bracket holes behind the axle must go on the outside of the hard brake line on the passenger side. The lower brackets have recesses to provide clearance for the hard brake lines, and you must ensure the brake line is not rubbing on the lower bracket or carriage bolt.
The clamp bar (A) is installed over the long carriage bolts (K) previously installed in the lower bracket. It is capped with two 3/8" flat washers (I) and two 3/8"-16 nylon lock nuts (L) and torqued to 15 lb-ft on both sides. The clamp bar helps secure the lower bracket/air spring assembly alignment on the axle.
Popular locations for inflation valve holes are: the wheel well flanges, the license plate recess in the bumper, under the gas cap access door, or through the license plate. Choose a convenient location with enough clearance around the inflation valves for an air chuck. Drill 5/16" holes at your chosen location.
Cut the air line assembly in two equal lengths using a sharp knife or hose cutter, making clean, square cuts. Do not use scissors or wire cutters, as these tools may deform the air line and cause leaks. Do not cut the lines at an angle. When connecting to fittings, cut off the air line leaving approximately 12" of extra air line, and ensure a clean square cut to prevent leaks.
Yes. You must drill 5/16" holes to install the inflation valves. The manual does not indicate that drilling is required for the air spring brackets themselves, as they use existing jounce bumper holes in the frame.
The 3/8"-16 x 7/8" hex cap screws (G), 3/8" lock washers (H), and 3/8" flat washers (I) attaching the lower bracket (B) to the air spring assemblies should be tightened to no more than 20 lb-ft.
The upper bracket (C) mounting hardware should be torqued to no more than 20 lb-ft during assembly. When installing the assemblies on the vehicle, the upper bracket's 3/8"-16 x 1.5" carriage bolts (J) capped with 3/8" flat washers (I) and 3/8"-16 nylon lock nuts (L) should be torqued to 15 lb-ft.
The clamp bar (A) is capped with two 3/8" flat washers (I) and two 3/8"-16 nylon lock nuts (L), and both nuts should be torqued evenly to 15 lb-ft.
The 90° swivel fitting (F) should be installed into the top of the air spring (D) finger tight plus one and a half turns.
A push-to-connect fitting is used to connect the air line to the 90° swivel fitting on the air spring. Push the air line into the fitting firmly with a slight side-to-side rotational twist until it bottoms out (9/16" of air line should be in the fitting). Check the connection by pulling on the line to verify a robust connection. To release the air line, first release all air from the system, push in on the air line, push the collar in, and with the collar depressed, pull the air line out of the fitting.
Route the air line along the frame to the fitting on the air spring, maintaining at least 6" of clearance between the air line and the exhaust system. Avoid sharp bends and edges. Use zip ties to secure the air line to fixed points along the chassis, ensuring the ties are tight but do not pinch the air line. Leave at least 2" of slack to allow for any movement that might pull on the air line.
Do not bend the 1/4" hose at a radius of less than 1" or bend the 3/8" hose at a radius of less than 1.5". Do not put side load pressure on the fitting. The hose should be straight beyond the fitting for 1" before bending.
Leave enough of the inflation valve in front of the nut to extend through the hole and have room for the rubber washer, flat washer, and 5/16" nut and cap. There should be approximately 1/2" of valve exposed after installation to easily apply a pressure gauge or an air chuck.
The maximum air pressure is 100 PSI. Never inflate beyond 100 PSI. Although the air springs are rated at a maximum inflation pressure of 100 PSI, the air pressure actually needed is dependent on load and GVWR.
The recommended minimum air pressure is 5 PSI. However, the air springs can safely be run at zero air pressure. For loaded vehicles (those with a heavy bed load, trailer, or both), maintain at least 25 PSI. Operating the vehicle below the minimum air spring pressure will void the Air Lift warranty.
No. Compressed air can cause injury and damage to the vehicle and parts if not handled properly. Do not try to inflate the air springs until they have been properly secured to the vehicle.
Maintain at least 1/2" of dead air space between the exhaust pipe and heat shield. The distance from the heat shield to the air spring bellows must also be at least 1/2".
Maintain at least 1/2" clearance from anything that might rub against each air spring sleeve. Be sure to check the tire, brakes, frame, shock absorbers, and brake cables. Also maintain at least 6" clearance between air springs and air lines and heat sources.
Inflate the air spring to 30 PSI. Spray all connections and the inflation valves with a solution of 1/5 liquid dish soap and 4/5 water. Spot leaks easily by looking for bubbles in the soapy water. After the test, deflate the springs to the minimum pressure required to restore the system to normal ride height (not lower than 5 PSI).
A 2–4 PSI loss after initial installation is normal. Check the air pressure again after 24 hours. If the loss is more than 5 PSI, retest for leaks.
Before road testing, perform these checks: (1) Clearance test — inflate to 75–90 PSI and verify at least 1/2" clearance from tires, brakes, frame, shock absorbers, and brake cables; (2) Leak test — inflate to 75–90 PSI and check all connections for leaks; (3) Heat test — verify at least 6" clearance from heat sources and install heat shield if included; (4) Fastener test — recheck all bolts for proper torque; (5) Road test — drive 10 miles and recheck for clearance, loose fasteners, and air leaks.
Recheck the air spring system after 30 days or 500 miles, whichever comes first. If any part shows signs of rubbing or abrasion, identify and move the source if possible. If relocation is not possible, the air spring may need to be remounted. Check all fasteners for tightness.
Check air pressure weekly to maintain proper system operation and ride height.
Loaded vehicles require at least 25 PSI. A "loaded vehicle" refers to a vehicle with a heavy bed load, a trailer, or both. Never exceed GVWR, regardless of air spring, air pressure, or other load assist.
The springs in this kit will support approximately 40 pounds of load (combined on both springs) for each 1 PSI of pressure. The required air pressure will vary depending on the state of the original suspension.
When increasing load, always adjust air pressure to maintain normal ride height. Increase or decrease pressure from the system as necessary to attain normal ride height for optimal ride and handling. Remember that loads carried behind the axle (including tongue loads) require more leveling force (pressure) than those carried directly over the axle. It may be necessary to maintain different pressures on each side of the vehicle, with differences as much as 50 PSI not uncommon.
If it becomes necessary to raise the vehicle by the frame, make sure the system is at minimum pressure (5 PSI) to reduce the tension on the suspension/brake components. Use of on-board leveling systems do not require deflation or disconnection.
On occasion, give the air springs a hard spray with a garden hose to remove mud, sand, gravel, or other debris.
If the air springs are properly installed and maintained, they can last indefinitely.
If the system won't maintain pressure overnight, perform a leak test on the air line connections, the threaded connection into the air spring, and all fittings in the control system. Check to make sure air lines are seated in connectors. Inspect fittings with soapy water. Trim 1" off the hose or re-seal the fitting. Ensure lines are cut straight.
Look for a kink or fold in the air line. Replace any air line that has been kinked.
If there is a problem with the swivel fitting: (1) Check the air line connection by deflating the spring and removing the line by pulling the collar against the fitting and pulling firmly on the air line. Trim 1" off the end of the air line, ensuring the cut is clean and square. Reinsert the air line into the push-to-connect fitting. (2) Check the threaded connection by tightening the swivel fitting another half turn. If it still leaks, deflate the air spring, remove the fitting, and re-coat the threads with thread sealant. Reinstall by hand tightening as much as possible and then use a wrench for an additional two turns.
If there is a problem with the inflation valve: (1) Check the valve core by tightening it with a valve core tool. (2) Check the air line by removing the air line from the barbed type fitting. Cut the air line off a few inches in front of the fitting and use a pair of pliers or vice grips to pull/twist the air line off of the fitting. Do not cut off the air line completely as this will usually nick the barb and render the fitting useless.
If it is suspected that the air bags have bottomed out, increase the pressure. Bottoming out indicates insufficient air pressure for the current load.
If the vehicle has a rough or harsh ride, it may be due to either too much pressure or not enough. Try different pressures to determine the best ride comfort. Adjust the pressure up and down to find the best ride.
If the vehicle rocks and rolls, adjust the air pressure to reduce movement. Stability issues including roll control, bounce, dive during braking, and sponginess usually require an increase in pressure.
If the front of the vehicle dives while braking, increase the pressure in the front air bags, if equipped.
If the vehicle's headlights are shining into the trees or the vehicle is leaning to one side, it is not level. Raise the air pressure to correct either of these problems and level the vehicle.
Kit 88349 is recommended for most 3/4-ton and 1-ton pickups and SUVs with leaf springs, motor home rear applications, and various front applications with leaf springs. Consult the installation diagram and your vehicle's specifications, or contact Air Lift customer service at (800) 248-0892 to confirm fitment.
You need: hoist or floor jacks, 2 safety stands, safety glasses, torque wrench, wrenches, ratchet, sockets, sharp 5/16" drill bits, heavy duty drill, hose cutter or sharp knife, air compressor, and spray bottle with dish soap/water solution.
Yes. You must remove the stock jounce bumpers and mounting brackets from under the frame rails on both sides of the vehicle before installing the air spring assemblies.
Lower bracket fasteners: 20 lb-ft. Upper bracket fasteners during assembly: 20 lb-ft. Upper bracket carriage bolts when installed on vehicle: 15 lb-ft. Clamp bar nuts: 15 lb-ft (both nuts evenly).
Maximum air pressure is 100 PSI. Minimum recommended pressure is 5 PSI, but loaded vehicles (with heavy bed load or trailer) require at least 25 PSI. Never exceed your vehicle's GVWR.
Perform clearance test (1/2" minimum from tires, brakes, frame, shocks, cables), leak test at 75–90 PSI, heat test (6" clearance from exhaust), fastener test (recheck torque), and 10-mile road test. Recheck clearance, fasteners, and leaks after driving.
Check air pressure weekly. Maintain normal ride height. Never exceed 100 PSI. Periodically check fasteners for tightness and air springs for rubbing. Spray air springs with a garden hose occasionally to remove debris. Perform a 30-day or 500-mile inspection.
Cause: Improperly installed air line, air line has holes or cracks, or fitting seal is compromised. Solution: Leak test the air line connections, the threaded connection into the air spring, and all fittings. Check that air lines are seated in connectors. Inspect fittings with soapy water. Trim 1" off the hose or re-seal the fitting. Ensure lines are cut straight.
Cause: Kink or fold in the air line. Solution: Replace any air line that has been kinked.
