Yes. The mounting rail is designed to install on both short bed (less than 8 feet long) and 8-foot long bed F150 trucks. The rear mounting rail is positioned 28-5/8 inches from the rear edge of the bed on both bed lengths. Hole locations for the forward rail differ slightly between bed lengths; refer to Figure B1 in the installation manual for the correct positions for your bed length.
The kit includes: 2 mounting rails (Patriot Rail Box RVR3210), 1 bracket set box (RVR2404) containing driver and passenger side plates, 14 carriage bolts (1/2" × 2"), 2 oval frame spacers, 2 circular frame spacers, 4 locking straps, 4 1/2" retainers, 4 1/2" flat washers, 14 1/2" lock washers, 14 1/2" finish nuts, 2 rectangular frame spacers, 10 3/8" U-shaped spacers, 10 offset rectangle washers, fish wire, and polypropylene tape. Verify all parts are present before installation using the parts list on page 1.
Required tools are: impact wrench or ratchet with 3/4" socket, 3/4" box end wrench, drill with 1/8" and 9/16" drill bits, tape measure, center punch, flashlight, hammer, torque wrench, eye protection, and ear protection. A Patriot 5th Wheel or Slider Base is also required for installation.
If your truck has a removable bed liner or mat, it must be removed or cut to allow the mounting rails to connect directly with the bed. If you have a spray-in bed liner, it is acceptable to install the mounting rails over it. When measuring hole locations with a spray-in liner, account for the thickness of the liner that has been sprayed over the end of the bed.
It may be necessary to remove the spare tire, heat shield, and/or fender liners before installation. These components should be replaced after the mounting rails are fully installed and torqued.
Yes. Drilling is required. You must drill 5 holes for the rear mounting rail and 5 holes for the forward mounting rail, for a total of 10 holes. First, use a center punch to mark hole locations, then drill with a 1/8" bit. After installing the frame carriage bolts and side plates, enlarge each 1/8" hole to 9/16" using the 1/8" holes as pilots. Refer to Figure B1 for exact hole locations, which differ between short bed and 8-foot long bed trucks.
The fuel tank of the truck may be directly below the area of the bed that needs to be drilled. Always carefully examine the area under the truck where modification will occur before drilling. Make certain that the fuel tank or other equipment is not damaged during drilling. Damage to the tank may result in property damage, serious injury, or death. Additionally, examine the area under the truck before drilling the forward mounting holes.
The installation sequence is: 1) Apply polypropylene tape to components that will contact the bed. 2) Layout and mark the rear mounting rail hole locations (28-5/8" from rear edge of bed). 3) Drill rear mounting holes with 1/8" bit. 4) Install rear carriage bolts into the frame using fish wire and locking straps. 5) Check hole alignment and enlarge holes to 9/16". 6) Install side plates (hand tighten only). 7) Drill forward mounting holes (locations differ from rear). 8) Install rear mounting rail over drilled holes with U-shaped spacers and carriage bolts (hand tighten). 9) Position forward mounting rail with base attached, ensuring correct spacing. 10) Install forward mounting rail with U-shaped spacers and carriage bolts (hand tighten). 11) Torque all hardware to 80 ft-lbs. 12) Replace removed truck components.
The polypropylene tape serves as an added layer of protection between the aluminum body of the truck bed and the steel components of the kit to prevent galvanic corrosion. Apply tape to the bottom of the entire length of both mounting rails (taking care not to cover any holes), to the outside edge of each side plate flange, and to 3/8" U-shaped spacers and offset rectangle washers when they are mounted against the bed. Refer to Figures A1, A2, and A3 for application locations.
The 3/8" U-shaped spacers function as space fillers between the mounting rails and the truck bed to account for the corrugation in the truck bed. Always place a 3/8" U-shaped spacer in the gap either above the bed (between the mounting rail and the bed) or below the bed (between the bed and the side plate flanges). Failure to use U-shaped spacers will result in property damage when hardware is tightened. Place spacers where needed when installing both the rear and forward mounting rails.
Fish wire is used to thread the rear carriage bolt and locking strap into the mounting hole in the frame. Insert the locking strap through the mounting hole until it is completely inside the frame, with only the carriage bolt passing through the hole. Fish wire is also used for the forward carriage bolt: attach the carriage bolt to the locking strap by passing the bolt through the strap, then insert the locking strap through the mounting hole until it is completely inside the frame. Refer to Figures C1 and C2 for visual guidance.
1) Place the forward mounting rail into the truck bed in front of the rear mounting rail. 2) Place the base over the rail attachment points and carefully lower it until the pin tabs pass through the attachment points on the rear mounting rail. 3) Attach the forward mounting rail to the forward mounting points on the base. The base should rest flat against the top of the rails. 4) Before drilling forward mounting holes, pull the RV base towards the rear of the truck and push the forward rail towards the cab of the truck to correctly space the mounting rails (see Figure F2). 5) Ensure the forward rail is centered in the truck bed. 6) Then proceed with drilling forward mounting holes.
All 1/2" nuts in the mounting rails and side plates must be torqued to 80 ft-lbs. Use a torque wrench to apply this specification. First torque all 1/2" nuts in the mounting rails, then torque all 1/2" nuts in the side plates. Do not fully tighten hardware during installation; hand tighten all nuts first, then apply final torque after all components are positioned.
The RVK2405 uses 1/2" × 2" carriage bolts. Fourteen of these bolts are included in the kit. Each bolt is secured with a 1/2" lock washer and 1/2" finish nut, torqued to 80 ft-lbs. The bolts are held in the frame with locking straps and frame spacers (oval, circular, or rectangular depending on location).
Two drill bit sizes are required: 1/8" and 9/16". First, use the 1/8" bit to drill the initial holes at marked locations for both the rear and forward mounting rails. Then, using the 1/8" holes as pilots, enlarge each hole to 9/16" with the 9/16" bit. This two-step process ensures accurate hole placement.
Place the rear mounting rail onto the bed of the truck. Hook a tape measure over the rear edge of the bed (not on any part of the tailgate) and measure 28-5/8" from the rear edge to position the mounting rail. Next, center the mounting rail in the bed by measuring the distance on either side from the edge of the rail to the side of the wheel well. The rail is centered when both measurements on either side are the same. The mounting rail is designed to install only at this described location; failure to place it precisely may result in added difficulty during installation and/or property damage.
Align each side plate to the side of the frame where it will be installed. Check that the 1/8" holes are centered within the slots in the side plate flanges (see Figure D2). If the 1/8" drilled holes are not centered, re-drill the 1/8" holes until the side plates and drilled holes are aligned. Only after confirming alignment should you enlarge the holes to 9/16".
No. When installing the side plates, attach each plate with two 1/2" washers, 1/2" lock washers, and 1/2" finish nuts, but do not fully tighten at this time. Hardware should be hand tightened only. Final torquing to 80 ft-lbs is performed after all mounting rails and components are positioned and hand tightened.
Access to the area above the fuel tank is limited, making it difficult to place U-shaped spacers below the bed during the forward mounting rail installation. It may be easier to place the spacers while installing the side plate. Strategies such as using tape to secure the spacers under the holes in the bed or over the slots in the side plate may be helpful.
Do not exceed the tow or tongue rating of the coupler, hitch, truck, or trailer. Exceeding these ratings may cause damage to towing components or loss of attachment between the trailer and truck. Understand all risks involved with towing before proceeding. For towing safety information, see "The Trailer Handbook: A guide to Understanding Trailer and Towing Safety" from the National Association of Trailer Manufacturers (www.NATM.com) and your trailer manufacturer's owner's manual. When towing a wedge car trailer, keep the center of gravity as low as possible by loading heavy cars over the axles. Never tow with a single car on the front of the trailer. Never exceed speeds that are reasonable for roadway conditions (e.g., turns, curves). Failure to account for proper trailer center of gravity and reasonable speeds may cause damage to the truck, trailer, towing components, and loss of attachment.
A visual inspection of the hitch should be performed before each time you tow. Regularly check that all pinned connections are secure and that all bolted connections are at the correct torque specification (80 ft-lbs for this hitch). Check for cracks or damage to the hitch. Do not tow with the hitch if cracks or damage outside of normal wear is found. Towing with a hitch that has cracks or damage could result in damage to the tow vehicle, trailer, towing components, or loss of attachment between the tow vehicle and trailer.

This bulletin addresses galvanic corrosion concerns when installing steel components on aluminum truck beds. The bulletin can be found at fordbbas.com/bulletins. The polypropylene tape included in the RVK2405 kit provides protection against galvanic corrosion.
