Yes, drilling is required. You must drill five holes for the rear mounting rail and five holes for the forward mounting rail. First, mark locations with a center punch tool and drill pilot holes with a 1/8" bit. Then enlarge each hole to 9/16" using a 9/16" drill bit. The manual provides specific hole locations in Figure A2. Always examine the area under the truck before drilling to ensure the fuel tank or other equipment will not be damaged.
The rear mounting rail should be positioned 29–3/8" from the rear edge of the bed on an 8-foot long bed, or 24–5/8" from the rear edge on a 6-foot 6-inch short bed. Measure from the rear edge of the bed (not the tailgate) and center the rail by measuring equal distances from the rail edge to each side of the bed. The rail must be positioned precisely as described; improper placement may result in installation difficulty or property damage.
2011–2015 trucks use 5/8" bolts with bolt guides that pass through the frame and out through holes in the side plates. 2016 and newer trucks have factory-threaded mounting holes and use M16 (16mm) cap screws. The side plate brackets accommodate both scenarios with different hole configurations. Each truck type uses different hardware and installation steps, so follow the instructions specific to your model year.
The side plates look very similar. The longer side plate feature (indicated in the manual) will be towards the rear of the truck when installed properly. Use this feature to distinguish the driver side plate from the passenger side plate during installation.
U-shaped spacers are space fillers provided in the kit to accommodate the corrugation in the truck bed. They must be placed in the gap either above the bed (between the mounting rail and bed) or below the bed (between the bed and side mounting brackets). Always use U-shaped spacers; failure to do so will result in property damage when hardware is tightened. Placement differs between the rear and forward mounting rails.
All 1/2" nuts on the mounting rails must be torqued to 80 ft-lbs using a torque wrench.
All 5/8" nuts and all M16 (16mm) cap screws on the side plates must be torqued to 100 ft-lbs using a torque wrench.
Thread a 5/8" × 2" carriage bolt onto each bolt guide so that the shoulder of the bolt head is flush with the surface of the guide. This is a tight fit and may require a wrench. The notches of the bolt guide must engage the corners of the bolt head to prevent the bolt from backing off. If the notches are smashed down, pry them up to ensure proper engagement.
Insert the front bolt guides (shorter ones) into the frame and guide the threaded end of the bolts out through the holes. Insert the rear bolt guides through the large holes on the inside of the frame rails and guide the threaded end of the bolts out of the holes in the frame. Figures B3 to B8 show the detailed steps for each installation.
Do not tighten the side plate mounting hardware when you first install the side plates. Leave them hand-tight until after you have positioned and installed the mounting rails and forward rail. Tighten all hardware only at the final step using a torque wrench.
Place the forward mounting rail in front of the rear mounting rail. Place the Patriot base over the rail attachment points and carefully lower it until the pin tabs pass through the attachment points on the rear mounting rail. Attach the forward mounting rail to the forward mounting points on the base. The base should rest flat against the top of the rails. Before drilling forward mounting holes, pull the RV base towards the rear of the truck and push the forward rail towards the cab to correctly space the mounting rails.
Yes, the hole locations are slightly different. The rear mounting rail has five drill locations at 29–3/8" (8-foot bed) or 24–5/8" (6-foot 6-inch bed) from the rear edge of the bed. The forward mounting rail has five different drill locations. Figure A2 shows both sets of locations. Use the same drilling method (mark, drill 1/8" pilot, enlarge to 9/16") for both rails.

Under the bed, install an offset square washer, 1/2" flat washer, 1/2" split lockwasher, and 1/2" finish nut on each carriage bolt. Place a U-shaped spacer in the gap either above or below the bed. Hand-tighten each nut initially, then torque to 80 ft-lbs.

The fuel tank of the truck may be directly below the area of the bed that needs to be drilled. Always carefully examine the area under the truck where drilling will occur before drilling. Make certain that the tank or other equipment is not damaged during drilling. Damage to the tank may result in property damage, serious injury, or death.
