Blue Ox is known internationally for recreational and commercial towing products, manufacturing in Pender, Nebraska since 1925. The line covers tow bars and vehicle-specific baseplates for flat towing behind a motorhome, sway control and weight distributing hitches, supplemental braking accessories and towing wiring, backed by patented designs and long-standing customer service.
Blue Ox has manufactured since 1925 and is recognised internationally for towing products and customer service. The company operates from Pender, Nebraska, where it grew out of Automatic Manufacturing Co., a business that started with cattle oilers and developed into agricultural equipment, tractor accessories and trailer towing hardware. That agricultural engineering heritage still shows in how the towing products are built, and the company holds patents across weight distribution, fifth wheel and tow bar designs.
Flat towing is the discipline Blue Ox is best known for. Towing a car with all four wheels on the ground behind a motorhome demands a system that stays rigid under braking, articulates properly over uneven ground, and connects to the towed vehicle at points strong enough to take the load. Blue Ox tow bars handle the first two, with self-aligning arms that latch under tension and release without a struggle when the load is off them. Vehicle-specific baseplates handle the third, engineered per make and model to tie into structural mounting points behind the fascia.
The wider flat towing range covers supplemental braking systems, safety cables and the accessories that make a complete legal setup, along with baseplate wiring and dinghy towing harnesses that pass lighting signals to the towed vehicle without back-feeding its electrical system.
For conventional trailer towing, Blue Ox weight distributing hitches with integrated sway control transfer tongue load onto the tow vehicle's front axle and resist the yaw that crosswinds and passing trucks induce.
The company describes its foundation as customer service, designing around what owners actually ask for, and it runs an RV park adjacent to the factory where customers can stay. Sister operations at the same Nebraska site include Automatic grain roller mills and MAD-RAMPS pivoting ramp systems.

The BXR2100 is rated for a maximum of 21,000 lbs gross towing weight and 5,000 lbs pin weight. However, you must also refer to your vehicle's owner's manual for maximum towing capacity and never exceed your vehicle's limits, as failure to follow vehicle manufacturer's recommendations could result in damage to your vehicle, personal injury or death.
The BXR2100 attaches to most 2-5/16" gooseneck balls. It is not intended for use on flat bed trucks. To confirm fitment for your specific vehicle, check that your truck has a 2-5/16" gooseneck ball and is not a flat bed model. For vehicle-specific compatibility questions, contact Blue Ox customer service at (402) 385-3051.
If a removable bed liner is installed, it must be removed or modified to allow the hitch to contact the bed directly. Spray-in bed liners are permissible and do not need to be removed.
Only use a SAE 2" king pin with the Blue Ox BXR2100 Fifth Wheel Hitch. The hitch is designed to attach to 2-5/16" gooseneck balls and work with a 2" king pin from the trailer.
A BXR9005 Rotaflex Lockout Kit is required only if you are using the BXR2100 with a Rota-Flex Pin Box. If your trailer does not use a Rota-Flex Pin Box, the kit is not needed.
You will need the following tools: a torque wrench, 19MM 12-point socket, 11/16" socket, 15/16" deep wall socket, and 5/8" wrench.
The BXR2100 includes 35 components including the base, hitch head, handle plate, backing plates, gooseneck coupler casting, various bolts and screws (Grade 5 and Grade 8), hex nuts, lock nuts, washers, bushings, springs, pins, rivets, rubber bumpers, and a locking pin. A complete parts list with part numbers and quantities is provided on pages 5 of the installation manual.
The manual requires that installation be performed by someone who is aware of the risks and has knowledge of hazards and proper safety procedures involved with adding components to the chassis of a vehicle and the tools needed for installation. For complex installations or if you are unsure, contact a Blue Ox dealer or qualified installer.
Make sure that the bed of the truck is clean of dirt and debris before starting installation. If you have a removable bed liner, it must be removed or modified to allow the hitch to contact the bed directly.
1. Place the base of the hitch onto the gooseneck 2-5/16" hitch ball so that the arrow on each side of the base points towards the cab of the truck. 2. Insert two 1/2" x 3-3/8" pins into the bottom holes in the hitch base and secure with lynch pins. 3. Using a 15/16" socket and torque wrench, tighten the top bolt on the hitch base to 45 ft/lbs. 4. Hand tighten the bolt on the cab side of the hitch base, then using a 19MM 12-point socket and torque wrench, tighten the square head bolt to 100 ft/lbs. 5. Hand tighten the jam nut on the cab side of the hitch base, then using a 15/16" deep wall socket and torque wrench, tighten the jam nut to 120 ft/lbs.
1. Insert the center post of the hitch head into hitch base with the handle towards the driver side of the truck. 2. Insert the 3/4" x 4-1/4" clevis pin and wrap the lanyard inside the base arms and lynch pin. 3. Tighten down the two 11/16" flange nuts evenly and torque to 54 ft/lbs, ensuring all slop has been removed from the center post. 4. Install a 11/16" jam nut onto each bolt and tighten both jam nuts evenly, then torque to 54 ft/lbs. The recommended clearance between truck bed and 5th wheel trailer is 6-8 inches; if adjustment is needed, remove the clevis pin and adjust the height appropriately.
The recommended clearance between the truck bed and 5th wheel trailer is 6-8 inches. To adjust the height of the hitch head if needed, remove the clevis pin and adjust appropriately. Ensure the trailer is as level as possible; pin box adjustment may be required.
The top bolt on the hitch base should be tightened to 45 ft/lbs using a 15/16" socket and torque wrench.
The square head bolt on the cab side of the hitch base should be tightened to 100 ft/lbs using a 19MM 12-point socket and torque wrench.
The jam nut on the cab side of the hitch base should be tightened to 120 ft/lbs using a 15/16" deep wall socket and torque wrench.
The two 11/16" flange nuts on the hitch head should be tightened evenly and torqued to 54 ft/lbs.
The 11/16" jam nuts on the hitch head should be tightened evenly and torqued to 54 ft/lbs.
Roughly 15-25% of the weight of the trailer should be on the hitch (pin weight). The hitch is rated for a maximum of 5,000 lbs pin weight.
Before towing, verify that the locking pin is in place in the hitch handle. Always ensure the king pin is locked into the hitch head prior to towing. Confirm that the coupler handle is completely in the locked position. Check for proper clearance between truck box and trailer (6-8 inches recommended). Connect the electrical cable and breakaway. Close and latch the tailgate.
Slightly raise the landing gear of the trailer. Do not stand between the trailer and the truck bed. Release the emergency brakes on the truck and apply the trailer brakes. Slowly try to pull the trailer forward. The wheel chocks and trailer brakes should not allow the truck to move forward if the hitch is properly connected. If the trailer separates from the truck, the landing gear will prevent the trailer from dropping or falling on the sides of the truck bed.
While the vehicle is in motion, do not hold or force the handle in any direction. Stand clear of the handle while hooking up and unhooking. Failure to do so may result in serious injury.
Complete a visual inspection before towing each time. Check that all bolted connections are at the correct torque specification on a regular basis. Verify that the locking pin is in place before towing. Check for proper clearance between truck box and trailer (6-8 inches recommended). Perform a pull test to confirm the hitch is properly connected.
Periodically clean any dirt and debris from the hitch. Moderately lubricate the locking pin on the hitch head with white lithium grease or equivalent grease. Check that all bolted connections are at the correct torque specification on a regular basis. It is recommended to always check the clearances between the truck cab and trailer in both towing and maneuvering positions.
The BXR9004 Lube Plate is a recommended accessory kit designed to be used on the hitch head to help prevent wear to the top plate surface. It is not required but is recommended for extended hitch life.
If the hitch is in an accident, it must be replaced. Do NOT use it again. An accident can cause unseen damage and using it again could result in more damage or serious injury. Do not use the hitch if it is damaged or missing parts.
Do not alter this product in any way. Modifying this product could change the integrity and lead to a loss of connection between the trailer and the tow vehicle. Failing to follow and/or altering these installation instructions will void the manufacturer's warranty.
Use the clearance calculation method provided in the manual: S = King Pin Offset (corner of camper set back from the king pin); W = Camper Width divided by 2; C = Camper Clearance = (W - S); T = Truck Clearance = (Distance from back of truck cab to gooseneck ball + 3.5"); X = Total Clearance = T - C. If X is positive, there is enough clearance; if X is negative, there is not enough clearance. The manual provides a detailed example on page 3.
1. Place wheel chocks on each side of the trailer wheels. 2. Remove the safety pin from the coupler handle on the hitch head. 3. Turn the handle clockwise to the open position. 4. Adjust the height of the trailer so the king pin is slightly above the top of the coupler. 5. Confirm that a lube plate is attached to the trailer's king pin. 6. Slowly back the truck towards the trailer, ensuring the king pin is centered with the coupler. 7. Once the king pin is over the center or slightly rear of center and within the inner coupler circle, lower the trailer until the king pin engages the hitch head. 8. Ensure the coupler handle is completely in the locked position before reinserting the safety pin. 9. Connect the electrical cable and breakaway. 10. Close and latch the tailgate.
1. Lower the landing gear on the trailer to rest firmly on the ground so the load is level with truck suspension. 2. Chock the wheels of the trailer. 3. Lower the truck tailgate. 4. Remove the pin from the coupler handle. 5. Pull and rotate the handle to the open position. 6. Raise the trailer until the tongue weight is removed from the truck and the king pin is above the hitch head. 7. Disconnect electrical and breakaway. 8. Move the truck forward from underneath the trailer. 9. Rotate the handle back to the locked position and reinsert the safety pin to lock the handle in the closed position.
1. Remove the locking pin from the hitch handle. 2. Pull the handle outward. 3. Turn the handle clockwise until it is in the open position. The handle will remain in this position until hook-up. 4. Once the hitch is hooked up to the king pin of the trailer, turn the handle and reinstall the locking pin. Verify that the handle is in the locked position before reinstalling the locking pin.
1. Remove the hitch head by loosening the driver side and tailgate side jam nuts and bolts. 2. Remove the 3/4" x 4-1/4" pin. 3. Pull the hitch head/center post out of the base and set aside. 4. To remove the base, loosen the cab side jam nut and bolt. 5. Loosen the top bolt on the hitch base. 6. Remove the two 1/2" x 3-3/8" pins from the hitch base and lift to remove the base from the gooseneck ball.
Hitch base top bolt: 45 ft/lbs. Cab side square head bolt: 100 ft/lbs. Cab side jam nut: 120 ft/lbs. Hitch head flange nuts: 54 ft/lbs. Hitch head jam nuts: 54 ft/lbs.
The BXR2100 is rated for 21,000 lbs gross towing weight and 5,000 lbs pin weight. Always verify your vehicle's towing capacity and never exceed it.
If the trailer separates from the truck during the pull test, the hitch is not properly connected. The king pin may not be fully engaged in the coupler, or the coupler handle may not be in the fully locked position. Stop immediately, do not tow. Reposition the trailer, ensure the king pin is centered in the coupler and fully lowered, and verify the coupler handle is completely locked before reinserting the safety pin. Perform the pull test again.
Remove the 3/4" x 4-1/4" clevis pin from the hitch head and adjust the height of the hitch head appropriately. Reinsert the pin and verify the new clearance. If the trailer is not level, pin box adjustment may be required. Ensure the trailer is as level as possible during towing.
Loosen the two 11/16" flange nuts on the hitch head. Tighten them down evenly, ensuring all slop is removed from the center post, and torque both to 54 ft/lbs. Then install the 11/16" jam nuts and torque them evenly to 54 ft/lbs as well.
