Blue Ox is known internationally for recreational and commercial towing products, manufacturing in Pender, Nebraska since 1925. The line covers tow bars and vehicle-specific baseplates for flat towing behind a motorhome, sway control and weight distributing hitches, supplemental braking accessories and towing wiring, backed by patented designs and long-standing customer service.
Blue Ox has manufactured since 1925 and is recognised internationally for towing products and customer service. The company operates from Pender, Nebraska, where it grew out of Automatic Manufacturing Co., a business that started with cattle oilers and developed into agricultural equipment, tractor accessories and trailer towing hardware. That agricultural engineering heritage still shows in how the towing products are built, and the company holds patents across weight distribution, fifth wheel and tow bar designs.
Flat towing is the discipline Blue Ox is best known for. Towing a car with all four wheels on the ground behind a motorhome demands a system that stays rigid under braking, articulates properly over uneven ground, and connects to the towed vehicle at points strong enough to take the load. Blue Ox tow bars handle the first two, with self-aligning arms that latch under tension and release without a struggle when the load is off them. Vehicle-specific baseplates handle the third, engineered per make and model to tie into structural mounting points behind the fascia.
The wider flat towing range covers supplemental braking systems, safety cables and the accessories that make a complete legal setup, along with baseplate wiring and dinghy towing harnesses that pass lighting signals to the towed vehicle without back-feeding its electrical system.
For conventional trailer towing, Blue Ox weight distributing hitches with integrated sway control transfer tongue load onto the tow vehicle's front axle and resist the yaw that crosswinds and passing trucks induce.
The company describes its foundation as customer service, designing around what owners actually ask for, and it runs an RV park adjacent to the factory where customers can stay. Sister operations at the same Nebraska site include Automatic grain roller mills and MAD-RAMPS pivoting ramp systems.

The BlueOx Tow Bar Base Plate, Front Mount, RV Flat Towing for Select, JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE (Part #FDRWBX1123) Refer to the included instructions for installation details. Basic hand tools are typically all you need.
Yes, the BX1123 is designed for 2005-10 Jeep Grand Cherokee. However, dimensional variations between otherwise identical vehicles can be considerable. Minor adjustments may be necessary to compensate for manufacturer tolerances, including filing holes slightly, bending electrical rods, and/or bending end plates.
Motorhome mount tow bars are recommended for use with the BX1123. The RangeFinderII, Adventurer, and Ambassador tow bars cannot be used due to the design of the removable tabs. The Acclaim tow bar may be used, but will not fold and store on the front of the vehicle. Most adapters cannot be used; only the BX8833 and BX88151 adapters are compatible.
The attachment tab height is 18-3/4" and the attachment tab width is 24".
Required tools are: 7MM socket, 10MM socket, 13MM socket, 9/16" socket, 13/32" drill bit, Phillips screwdriver, diagonal cutter, plastic pop rivet tool, and vise grip. Loctite RED is also required for all bolts.
The kit includes: one baseplate (61-6078), four 3/8" nut plates with 14" wire (61-5208), four 3/8"-16 x 1-1/2" hex bolts Grade 5 (201-0440), four 3/8"-16 x 1" hex bolts Grade 5 (201-0443), eight 3/8" lock washers (203-0010), four 3/8"-16 hex nuts (202-0003), one 6MM-1.00 x 45MM hex bolt Grade 8.8 (201-0702), one 1/4"-20 x 3/4" hex bolt Grade 5 (201-0569), two 1/4" lock washers (203-0008), two 1/4" flat washers (203-0001), one 1/4"-20 hex nut (202-0001), six 3/8" flat washers (203-0003), two #12-14 x 1" self-drilling screws (201-0979), two #10-32 x 1/2" slot round head screws (201-0192), two #10 lock washers (203-0054), two #10-32 hex nuts (202-0047), two 4-way connector adapters (101-5822), two attachment tabs (62-3468), two 36" Class III safety cables (226-0046), two 3/8" quicklinks (229-0359), four 6.33MM plastic rivets (229-0536), and two black receiver cap plugs (290-0437).
Blue Ox towing products are intended to be installed by Blue Ox Dealers who are familiar with the products and have the equipment and knowledge to do fit work. Blue Ox Dealers can be found at www.blueox.com or by contacting the Customer Care Department at (402) 385-3051.
The following components are removed and reinstalled: black plastic rivet cover above the grille, front grille, front fascia, frame caps, windshield washer reservoir, and horn bracket. Tow hooks will NOT be reinstalled. The installation also requires removal of the front bumper fascia and its electrical connections.
Yes, drilling is required. Using the baseplate as a template, all holes must be drilled with a 13/32" drill bit on both sides of the vehicle. The manual also notes that minor adjustments may include filing holes slightly, bending electrical rods, and/or bending end plates to compensate for manufacturer tolerances.
All bolts must be tightened according to the torque chart provided. For Grade 5 bolts: 1/4" = 10 ft-lbs, 5/16" = 19 ft-lbs, 3/8" = 33 ft-lbs, 7/16" = 54 ft-lbs, 1/2" = 78 ft-lbs, 5/8" = 154 ft-lbs. For Grade 8 bolts: 1/4" = 14 ft-lbs, 5/16" = 29 ft-lbs, 3/8" = 47 ft-lbs, 7/16" = 78 ft-lbs, 1/2" = 119 ft-lbs, 5/8" = 230 ft-lbs. For metric Grade 8.8 bolts: 6MM = 6 ft-lbs, 8MM = 16 ft-lbs, 10MM = 31 ft-lbs, 12MM = 54 ft-lbs, 14MM = 89 ft-lbs. For metric Grade 10.9 bolts: 6MM = 8 ft-lbs, 8MM = 22 ft-lbs, 10MM = 40 ft-lbs, 12MM = 70 ft-lbs, 14MM = 117 ft-lbs. Loctite RED must be used on all bolts before tightening.
The baseplate must be as far forward as possible behind the bumper bracket and level with the frame. It should be aligned with the existing hole for the horn bracket on the passenger's side and the front bolt location for the reservoir on the driver's side. The fascia should be slid onto the vehicle to verify the baseplate comes through the opening properly, and adjusted as needed.
Two nut plates are inserted into the end of the frame rail to align with the top two drilled holes. Each nut plate is then tightened using a 3/8"-16 hex bolt and lock washer with a 9/16" socket. This is done on both sides of the vehicle. Loctite RED must be applied to all bolts before tightening, and bolts must be tightened according to the torque chart.
The washer reservoir is aligned to its original position and the existing backing bolt is installed. A 6MM-1.00 x 45MM hex bolt and 1/4" lock washer are inserted into the front washer reservoir bolt location. Six 3/8" flat washers are slid between the reservoir and baseplate, then tightened to its original position without over-tightening. Additionally, a 1/4"-20 x 3/4" bolt and flat washer are tightened into the existing bolt hole of the upper reservoir spout, with a 1/4" lock washer and hex nut tightened on the back side of the radiator support.
If the baseplate is in an accident, it must be replaced and not reused. An accident can cause unseen damage, and using it again could result in more damage or serious injury. Do not use the baseplate if it is damaged or missing parts.
Permanent baseplate safety cables are strongly recommended when towing a vehicle with a tow bar. The cables must be connected from the baseplate to the frame rail or cross member of the vehicle's frame. The weight rating of the two cables together will not qualify; each cable must have an adequate weight rating for the towing system. These cables should remain installed as long as the baseplate is installed and must be used in conjunction with, not as a replacement for, legally required safety cables attaching the towed vehicle to the towing vehicle. Cables must not be mounted against wires, hoses or brake lines.
Before each towing trip, inspect all towing equipment for cracked welds, missing or worn parts, and loose bolts. Use Loctite Red on all bolts and tighten to the recommended specifications. Ensure all electrical connections are plugged in properly and functioning before installing the fascia.
Yes, the attachment tabs should be removed when not in use if applicable.
The BX8869 Bulb and Socket Wiring Kit is recommended for this vehicle but is not listed in the parts kit. It must be ordered separately.
Many Blue Ox baseplates are designed to use existing holes and hardware to mount the baseplate to the towed vehicle. However, do not assume existing bolts are adequate for baseplate mounting. Always use hardware supplied in the hardware kit or existing hardware specified in the Baseplate Towing Installation Instructions. For the BX1123, existing bolts are reused for the horn bracket and washer reservoir locations, but new hardware is provided for the nut plate and other mounting points.
If a bolt is lost or needs replacement, use a replacement bolt of the same grade. In most cases it will be Grade 5; refer to the parts list to confirm. Replacement parts may be ordered through your nearest Blue Ox Dealer or Distributor. Do not substitute homemade or non-typical parts.
Confirm the towability and pre-towing procedures for your vehicle with the owner's manual or contact the vehicle's manufacturer for specific towing procedures. It is the owner's responsibility to hook up all towing equipment per manufacturer's instructions and recommendations.
The baseplate installer must watch for oil cooler and air conditioner lines, electrical wires and hoses, and missing parts or attaching points on the frame. Do not mount the permanent baseplate safety cables against wires, hoses or brake lines. If the baseplate is improperly installed and is against a wire or hose, it could cause fluid leaks or electrical shorts some time after the actual baseplate installation.

Motorhome mount tow bars are recommended. RangeFinderII, Adventurer, and Ambassador tow bars cannot be used. Acclaim tow bar may be used but will not fold and store on the front. Only BX8833 and BX88151 adapters are compatible.
